Castro and the Cuban Revolution


Research … and write what occurred on the dates below:

1952 Batista Fulgencio Batista led a
becoming military coup in Cuba,
dictator overthrowing the
government and
establishing himself as the
country's dictator. This
event marked the
beginning of Batista's
regime and set the stage
for the Cuban Revolution.

July 26, 1953 Attack on Fidel Castro led an attack

attack was aimed at
overthrowing Batista's
government but ended in
failure. Castro and many of
his followers were
captured, and some were
killed. This event became
known as the "Moncada
Barracks attack" and is

November 26, 1956 Castro Fidel Castro, along with


lands in Che Guevara and other
Cuba revolutionaries, landed in
Cuba aboard the yacht
Granma. They aimed to
start a guerrilla war against
Batista's government.
Despite being attacked by
government forces shortly
after landing, Castro and
his followers managed to
escape into the Sierra
Maestra mountains, where
they began their
revolutionary campaign.

December 31, 1958 After two years of guerrilla


warfare and gaining
support from various
sectors of Cuban society,
including workers,
peasants, and students,
Castro's forces succeeded
in overthrowing Batista's
government. Batista fled
Cuba, and on January 1,
1959, Castro's forces
entered Havana, marking
the victory of the Cuban
Revolution.
