In what ways does Achebe make Unoka such a memorable character?

In the prose ‘Things Fall Apart’ written by Chinua Achebe. Achebe

introduces the reader to many characters but none completely like
Unoka. Achebe uses Unoka as a contrast character to Okonkwo, his son.
Unoka was a father and a husband.

Unoka is identified as a selfish man. The reader observes this when the
author declares that whenever Unoka got money from the people he
borrowed it from, he would buy palm wine and call his friends to
celebrate. As the reader knows, Unoka is a husband and a father which
makes him the head of the house and the role of the head of the house
is to provide for his family, educate, led by example, and protect.
Instead Unoka does not provide for his family but wastes the money on
palm wine, he does not set himself as an example for his son, Okonkwo
but becomes the reason why Okonkwo becomes hardworking, a
protector a leader and a provider which was the fear of becoming like
his failure of a father. This shows how selfish Unoka was.

Unoka’s selfishness is also seen when Okoye is brought in to the picture

to become a contrast character of Unoka and highlights the differences
between the father and son. Okoye is one of Unoka’s creditors meaning
he is someone owed money by Unoka. Okoye needed his money back
for the preparation of his ceremony where he would take up a new title.
Unlike Unoka, Okoye was successful, with a yam field. Unoka laughed in
his face and made an excuse about how he had to pay his larger debts
first before he could pay the smaller ones. The reader would expect
Unoka as a debtor to be humble by not laughing in Okoye’s face and for
Unoka to find some means to pay Okoye back in time. For example,
finding a job. Instead, Okoye is left searching for other ways to have
enough money to prepare for the ceremony while his son paid his
father’s debts but he did not become a debtor. This shows how selfish
Unoka was.
In conclusion, Achebe makes Unoka such a memorable character by
making Unoka a contrast character to Okonkwo. By displaying Unoka as
a selfish person whereas Okonkwo as considerate of his family and the
people around him by being able to pay his father’s debts but was not a
debtor and by displaying characteristics of the head of the house.
