As a matter of fact, the posters make use of many striking symbols and colors to convey their
message. For instance, in the first poster, the white dove emphasizes the need for peace and
freedom. However it seems to have become a shooting target surrounded by cage-like stripes
and prevented from escaping by the NRA written above. Therefore it is in danger and the red
color is a visual representation of the violence and numerous deaths caused by assault
weapons. The author also decided to use an automatic weapon used for mass killing to
illustrate the idea that gun ownership is not the real problem here, however the automatic
weapon industry is. Indeed the hand using it isn’t well placed showing that it could be
anyone’s hand, therefore even someone without proper training. Most importantly the gun is
the only thing separating “America” from the dove, therefore from peace.
Moreover, there is also a reference to the omnipresent religious aura in American society
which is supposedly protected by God and God’s chosen place on earth. However the artist
also twisted this idea referring to Satan in order to demonize the NRA, as the association is
held responsible for the deadly shootings and there is apparently nothing God can do against
it.

On the other hand, the second poster is more colorful, this may be a symbol of
hope with the rising sun since the protesters appear to be strong-
willed/determined to never give up until stricter gun-laws will have been voted.
What is more the dominance of black can also symbolize mourning/grieving. In
addition, the flowers and names of shooting places can stand for the metaphor
of graves/tombs. However as the protesters are all in black it shows that they
could be anyone in the population. Indeed, this issue gathers people from all
genders, ages, religions and ethnicities as we can see them represented on the
posters.
