INDEX
Law of similarity 3-4

Law of proximity 5-6

Law of continuity 7-8

Law of closure 9 - 10

Law of figure/ground 11 - 12

Gestalt laws in our lives 13 - 18

The law of Similarity states that when
items share visual characteristics, they
LAW OF are perceived as more related than
objects that are dissimilar.
SIMILARITY
For example, in this picture our eyes
on which first focus or first see are
the white dotes, because have a
different color from the others
EXAMPLES
Elements that are close to each other are
perceived to be related when compared
LAW OF
with elements that are separate from
each other PROXIMITY

For example, in this drawing, our

eye groups the circles into different
groups by their placement. And
separate the image in 2
EXAMPLES
The law of Continuity states that we are

LAW OF more likely to construct figures out of

visual elements that are more
continuous, rather than ones that
CONTINUITY contain lots of changes in direction.

For example, in this image we see 2

curved lines which are enlazed each
other, not a lot of deformed ovals.
That is because understand the lines
is easier than the ovals
EXAMPLES
The law of closure sais that our eyes tend
LAW OF
to create non-existent lines that are not
drawn in images with missing strokes CLOSURE
For example, in this image what is
drawn are 6 penthagons in different
poses. But our eyes creates the
missing lines, and following we have
a soccer ball
EXAMPLES:
The law of figure/ground states that we
LAW OF FIGURE create new forms or figures only by the
ground and sometimes we have 2

& GROUND different drawings

For example, in this image the

principal form is the tree. But our
eyes also see the lion and the gorila
which are part of the ground but we
see them as part of the image.
