About this piece:

This piece is by the composer Johann Brahms of the Romantic Era. Brahms
was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1833 and although he was a major part of the
Romantic movement he also had many characteristics of the Classical era music in his
compositions.

He was a perfectionist and extremely self critical about his work despite his great
popularity. The Hungarian Dance is a series of 21 lively dances based on Hungarian
folk songs. Only three of these were completely original by Brahms.

This particular piece is perhaps the most popular and is named Hungarian Dance No.
5 in G minor. (It has been transposed for this arrangement to the key of E minor.

About this piece:

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a prodigious composer of the Classical period. He
began composing music at the tender age of five and had more then 600 compositions
over his lifetime.

He influenced other great composers such as Beethoven, Chopin and Tchaikovsky.

This piece known as Turkish Rondo, or Rondo Alla Turca, was originally the third and
final movement of a piece called Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major.

The name for this particular movement was Alla Turca: Allegretto, and is more well
known then the other two movements. It imitates the trend of that time which was
Turkish military marching music.

About this piece:

Here is another piece by Tchaikovsky. This was the theme song for the Nutcrackers
march. It is the second piece that is played in both the ballet and the musical suite.

The Nutcracker has become the most popular ballet of the Western world.

Eight pieces from the musical work were selected by Tchaikovsky to make The
Nutcracker Suite suitable to be performed simply as an orchestral work featuring the
celesta. The instrumental gained success much sooner then the full ballet.

About this piece:

Joseph-Maurice Ravel was a French composer and a pianist. He lived from 1875-
1937 in the era known as the ‘impressionistic period’. Ravel’s musical style is very
classic, he uses traditional structures with experimental harmony.

This piece Bolero is his most famed piece, contrary to Ravels complacency with the
orchestral work. It was originally written for a ballet and was one of his last pieces
before he became ill and retired from composition.

About this piece:

Here is another Ragtime piano piece by Scott Joplin. The Maple Leaf Rag was one
of Joplin’s earlier works and was written to honor the Maple Leaf Club, which was a
black social club in Missouri in the 1890s.

After its completion Joplin boasted to a fellow ragtime composer that this rag would
make him the ‘King of ragtime composers’.

After it was published in 1899 it sold over 1 million copies of sheet music, and was a
huge success bringing Joplin the accomplishment of having composed the first great
sheet music hit in America.

About this piece:

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi was born in Venice in 1678 and died in 1741. He was a popular
composer in the Baroque era. He was also an Italian priest, and a famous violinist.

It is part of a collection of 4 concertos originally for the violin, called The Four Seasons.
This series of concertos was his most well known works. The performance indication
at the top of the piece ‘Vivace’, indicates for it to be played lively and vivacious.

About this piece:

Fur Elise was composed by Ludwig Van Beethoven as a Bagatelle in A minor for solo
piano. The piece was written around 1810, and is said to be devoted to one of his
mistresses at the time.

Fur Elise is one of the most popular classical pieces that piano students around the
world request to learn. It is popular for its beautiful melody, and simple arrangement. The
right hand carries the melody, while the left hand plays arpeggios to accompany.
