PROJECT: COUNTRIES

1) Mexico is a country in the southern portion of North America. Mexico is bordered by

the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico; the United States to the
north, and Belize and Guatemala to the south.

2) Each of the three vertical strips of color on the Mexican flag represents
something different.

• The color green represented the independence movement to gain freedom

from Spanish rule.

• The color red represented the unity between the indigenous people of Mexico
and the Europeans, which played a major role in the independence movement
of Mexico.

• The color white was chosen to represent the purity of the Roman Catholic
religion.

While these may not be particularly relevant to modern Mexico, the colors continue to
hold a common significance: green is said to represent hope, white represents unity,
and red is a symbol of the blood of those who died for the nation’s freedom.

3)

Mexico borders 3 countries: the United States, Guatemala and Belize.

4) Mexican Spanish is the variety of dialects and sociolects of the Spanish language
spoken in the United Mexican States.

5) Mexican PESO: The Mexican peso is the 16th most traded currency in the world, the
third most traded currency from the Americas (after the United States dollar and
Canadian dollar), and the most traded currency from Latin America.

6) Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and the largest city in the country.
Mexico City is an enormous metropolis that contains about one-fifth of Mexico’s total
population.
Mexico City is located in the south-central area of Mexico, in a region known as the
Valley of Mexico (also called the Basin of Mexico) within the high Mexican central
plateau.

7) Andrés Manuel López Obrador , also known by his initials AMLO, is a Mexican
politician.

8) With a population of about 129 million in 2022, Mexico is the 10th most populated
country in the world.

9) The climate of Mexico is very varied. The Tropic of Cancer effectively divides the
country into temperate and tropical zones. Land that is north of the twenty-fourth
parallel experiences lower temperatures during the winter months.

10) After tacos, chilaquiles are one of the most treasured traditional foods by
Mexicans. The deep-fried corn tortilla chips topped with red or green sauce, cheese,
onion, and sour cream are, as simple as it sounds, the quintessential breakfast in
Mexican homes.

11)
- Chichen Itza: Chichen Itza is one of the most popular landmarks in Mexico because it
offers a different perspective on Mayan history, culture, and humanity.
- Tulum Ruins: One of the most popular parts of the Tulum Ruins is “The Castle,” which
was a lookout point that provided amazing views of the Caribbean Sea.
- Zocalo, Mexico City: The Zocalo is one of the largest squares in Mexico City. This
plaza is known for its architecture, history, and high concentration of Mexican culture.
- Palenque: The Palenque ruins contain at least eight temples that were created as a
tribute to Chaac, the Mayan rain god.

12) The golden eagle, the connotation of the golden eagle is of strength, power,
dominance over others, warrior character, aggressiveness and bravery. During the War
of Independence, this species was used in different banners, signifying the yearning for
freedom.

13)
- Luis Miguel is a Mexican singer. Having performed in a wide range of styles like pop
and jazz, Miguel is considered the most successful artist in the history of Latin America.

Her work is said to have been inspired by the nature, artifacts and popular culture of
Mexico.
