1. Where does the play open?

Dukes palace in illyria
2. The Duke has a very famous speech, in the beginning of the play, about love. How is the
Duke feeling about love as the play opens?
He loves love. He is in love with Olivia and wants to be with her
3. What news does Valentine bring the Duke? How does the Duke take this news?
Olivia says no to his proposal because of her brother's death she is going to be in mourning for 7 years
and she won't see the duke. Duke was persistent and doesn't give up
ACT I SCENE ii
1. What country has Viola arrived in?
Illyria
2. What does Viola think has happened to her brother? How does the captain give her some
hope about Sebastian?
She thinks he's dead. The captain says he saw her brother hold on to the ship and gives Viola
hope(foreshadowing)
3. What do Viola and Olivia seem to have in common?
They both have lost their brothers and both are alone and single. Both are in mourning
4. What plan does Viola propose to the captain?
To dress as a man so she can get a job with the duke and create a stable living for herself. She made the
sea captain promise that he won't tell anyone about her secret.
