In Islam, there are no clearly defined puberty rites. Instead, there are activities that are introduced to children from the age of seven. These activities channel children towards gender-based adult roles in an Islamic society. For example, at the age of seven or twelve, depending on the community, boys begin to attend public prayers with adults. Girls get more involved in home activities. Socialisation of children into what is expected of girls and boys begins at this point. At this age, both boys and girls begin to fast during Ramadan. Fasting helps to develop qualities such as endurance and tolerance.
