( Short version of the greatest show Dance )
The greatest show
BARNUM
Ladies and gents, this is the
moment you've waited for.
Been searching in the dark, your sweat
soaking through the floor.
And buried in your bones there's
an ache that you can't ignore.
Taking your breath, stealing your mind.
And all that was real is left behind.
Don't fight it, it's
coming for you, running
at ya.
It's only this moment, don't
care what comes after.
Your fever dream, can't
you see it getting closer.
Just surrender 'cause you
feel the feeling taking
over. It's fire, it's freedom,
it's flooding open.
It's a preacher in the pulpit
and you'll find devotion.
There's something
breaking at the brick of
every wall it's holding all
that you know, so tell me
do you wanna go?
Where it's covered in
all the coloured lights.
Where the runaways
are running the night.
Impossible comes true,
it's taking over you.
Oh, this is the greatest show.
We light it up, we won't come
down. And the sun can't stop us
now.
Watching it come
true, it's taking over
you.
Oh, this is the greatest show.
It's everything you ever
want. It's everything you
ever need.
And it's here right in front of you.
This is where you wanna be.
It's everything you ever want.
It's everything you ever need.
And it's here right in front of you.
This is where you wanna be.
It's everything you ever want
It's everything you ever need.
And it's here right in front of you.
This is where you wanna be. It's everything you ever want. It's everything you ever need.
And it's here right in front of you.

SCENE 9 (Fancy
Restaurant )
(BARNUM sits next to Phillip Carlyle in the Restaurant)
BARNUM Mr Phillip Carlyle ? You produced this play?
Phillip Carlyle : Yes I do, indeed.
BARNUM P.T. BARNUM.
Phillip Carlyle : From the circus?
BARNUM Yes. You've been?
Phillip Carlyle : No. But I've seen the crowds. People leave your show happier than
when they came in. Which is much more than I can say from my play.
BARNUM: Come join our circus. You clearly have a flair for show business. If we
present legitimate entertainments, we can expand our appeal.Go after the
high:brows.Can I buy you a Cola?
Phillip Carlyle : Funny, you want to attract the snobs and I've spent my entire life wishing to get
away from them.
BARNUM Why not? Sounds thrilling doesn't it?
Phillip Carlyle : Let’s just say that I find it much more comfortable...admiring your
show from afar. Do you understand that just associating with you could cost me my
inheritance. I would be risking everything.
BARNUM: But, on the other hand, well, you just might find yourself a free man.
The Other Side
Right here, right now I put the
offer out.
I don't want to chase you down. I
know you see it.
You run with me.
And I can cut you free. Out of the
drudgery and walls you keep in. So
trade that typical for something
colourful.
And if it's crazy, live a little crazy.
You can play it sensible, a king of
conventional.
Or you can risk it all and see.
Don't you wanna get away from
same old part you gotta play.
'Cause I got what you need.
So come with me and take the ride.
It'll take you to the other side.
'Cause you can do like you do Or
you can do like me.
Stay in the cage, or you'll finally
take the key.
Oh, damn! Suddenly you're free to
fly.
It'll take you to the other side.
Okay, my friend, you want to cut
me in.
Well I hate to tell you, but it just
won't happen. So thanks, but no.
I think I'm good to go.
'Cause I quite enjoy the life you
say I'm trapped in. Now I admire
you, and that whole show you do.
You're onto something,
really it's something.
But I live among the swells, and
we don't pick up peanut shells. I'll
have to leave that up to you.
Don't you know that I'm okay with
this uptown part I get to play.
'Cause I got what I need and I don't
want to take the ride
I don't need to see the other side.
So go and do like you do.
I'm good to do like me. Ain't in a
cage, so I don't need to take the
key.
Oh, damn! Can't you see I'm doing
fine?
I don't need to see the other side.
Now is this really how you like to
spend your days? Whiskey and
misery,
and parties and plays.
If I were mixed up with you, I'd be
the talk of the town. Disgraced and
disowned, another one of the
clowns. But you would finally live
a little, finally laugh a little.
Just let me give you the freedom to
dream and it'll wake you up and
cure your aching.
Take your walls and start 'em
breaking.
Now that's a deal that seems worth
taking.
But I guess I'll
leave that up to you.
Well it's intriguing, but
to go would cost me greatly. So
what percentage of the show
would I be taking?
Fair enough, you'd want a piece of
all the action.
I'd give you seven, we could shake
and make it happen.
I wasn't born this morning,
eighteen would be just fine. Why
not just go ahead and ask for
nickels on the dime?
: 15.
: I'm doing eight.
: 12.
Make it 10.
Sir, it looks like you
have yourself a junior partner.
What I have is an
overcompensated apprentice.
Don't you wanna get away to a
whole new part you're gonna play.
'Cause I got what you need, so
come with me and take the ride. to
the other side.
So if you do like I do So if you do
like me.
Forget the cage, 'cause we know
how to make the key.
Oh, damn!
Suddenly we're free
to fly.
We're going to the other side.
So if you do like I do.
To the other side.
So if you do like
me. 'Cause if we do
we're going to the other side.
( BARNUM shakes hand with Phillip Carlyle )
SCENE 10 (The
Circus)

BARNUM Do you have any thoughts on this?
Phillip Carlyle : As a matter of fact, I do. (Reads the following: )
"The master of the Household, has it in the command of the Queen...To invite Mr. Phineas
BARNUM and his theatrical troupe to a reception at Buckingham Palace."
LETTIE: Queen Victoria? Is this real?
Phillip Carlyle : I had to pull a few strings. If you want society to accept you,
Anne: Are we all invited?
(Phillip Carlyle nods his head)
Phillip Carlyle : The Queen of England. Can't get much better than that.
SCENE 11 (THE
PALACE)

Charles: General, ma'am.
Queen Victoria: You are even smaller than I imagined.
Charles: Well, you are not exactly reaching the top self yourself sweetheart.
(Queen starts laughing her head off).
Jenny is standing in front of BARNUM and Philip
Phillip Carlyle : This is Miss Jenny Lind. She is the most famous
performer in all of Europe. She has sold out La Scala a dozen times. Not to
mention the French Opera.
BARNUM and Philip head towards Jenny
Phillip Carlyle :
My name is Phillip Phillip Carlyle . And this extraordinary gentleman next to me...
Phineas Taylor BARNUM.
BARNUM : The pleasure is mine.
Jenny : Of course, you are the American. I believe I might have heard of you.
BARNUM : Oh well, If you've heard of me all the way over here,I must have been doing something right.
Jenny : That, or something very wrong.
BARNUM : A showman, Miss Lind, just a showman. The best on my side of the Atlantic.
Jenny : If you just say so yourself.
BARNUM : I do, but I don't have to. Miss Lind, let me get to the point.
I would like to bring you to New York. And if you agree...I will make you the most famous
singer not in Europe but in the entire world.
Jenny : And have you heard me sing?
BARNUM : Absolutely. No, I haven't. But like mine, your reputation precedes you...
You will be the "Voice of a nightingale, Heart of an Angel."
BARNUM kiss her hand out of respect
SCENE 12
( BARNUM’s house)
CHARITY: How could you risk it all for this lady that you didn’t hear her voice before, and you
let your circus down, you will lose everything, I don’t think you are doing this because you like
her voice, I think you like HER.
BARNUM : What are you saying? Are you jealous ? this is absurd, and no i just believe I
need to go bigger and she’s going to be the key.
CHARITY: this is nonsense. I’m gonna be staying at my father’s house till you figure yourself
out.
BARNUM: You all will see, this Jenny will bring the fortune we are waiting for.
CHARITY: We weren’t waiting for the extra money, when I first loved and married you it was
the passionate man who cares about art and artists, not the one who runs behind money and risk-
free hypocrates shows. This woman is gonna ruin you. You will be left with nothing.
(CHARITY storms off the stage_

"Hide away," they say.

SCENE 14
(The Opera House Outdoor)
(Anne goes to ticket office)
Anne : Mr. BARNUM said he left a ticket for me.
Ticket seller : I'm sorry, there’s only one.
Anne : No, there's meant to be two.
Phillip Carlyle : Wasn't sure you'd come if I asked.
Anne : I've always wanted to go to the theater.
(Phillip’s Father and Mother arrives)
Phillip’s Father : Phillip, is that you?
Phillip Carlyle : Mother. Father. This is Anne Wheeler.
Phillip’s Father : Phillip, have you no shame? To associate yourself with that BARNUM
business is one thing...but parading around with that...
Anne : Anne.
Phillip Carlyle : How dare you speak to her like that?
Phillip’s Mother: You forget your place, Phillip.
Phillip Carlyle : My place? Mother, if this is my place, then I don't wanna be a part of it.
They are small minded people.
(Phillip’s Father and Mother leave, Anne tries to hold his hand he refuses)
Anne : Why do you care what they say?
Phillip Carlyle : It's not just them.
Anne : Never had somebody look at you the way your parents looked at me. The way
everyone would look at us.
ReWrite the Stars
You know I want you.
It's not a secret I try to hide.
I know you want me.
So don't keep saying our hands are
tied. You claim it's not in the cards.
And fate is pulling you miles away.
And out of reach from me.
But you're here in my heart.
So who can stop me if I decide
that you are my destiny?
What if we rewrite the stars?
Say you were made to be mine.
Nothing could keep us apart.
You'd be the one
I was meant to find.
It's up to you,
and it's up to me. No one can say
what we get to be.
So why don't we rewrite the stars?
Maybe the world could be ours,
tonight.
You think it's easy?
You think I don't want to run to you.
But there are mountains.
And there are doors that we can't
walk through.
I know you're wondering why.
Because we're able to be Just you
and me
within these walls.
But when we go outside,
you're gonna wake up and see that
that it was hopeless after all.
No one can rewrite the stars.
How can you say you'll be mine?
Everything keeps us apart.
And I'm not the one you were meant
to find. It's not up to you,
it's not up to me.
When everyone tells us what we can
be. How can we rewrite the stars?
Say that the world can be ours,
tonight.
All I want is to fly with you. All I
want is to fall with you. So just give
me all of you. It feels impossible
It's not impossible.
Is it impossible?
See that it's possible.
How do we rewrite the stars?
Say you were made to be mine?
Nothing can keep us apart.
Cause you are the one I was meant
to find.
It's up to you, and it's up to me.
No one can say what we get to be.
And why don't we rewrite the stars?
Changing the world to be ours. You
know I want you.
It's not a secret I try to hide. But I
can't have you.
We're bound to break and my hands
are tied.
SCENE 15
(The Train)
Jenny: You should finish your tour without me.
BARNUM : It's two hours until curtain, but I, I should go. I have become a distraction.
I'm sorry.
Jenny : What? You're leaving?
BARNUM : The itinerary is well in hand.
Jenny : So that's it. I'm just another one of your acts. I'm done.
BARNUM : Jenny, Jenny, please. You have to finish the tour.
Jenny : Must I?
BARNUM : It will ruin me.
Jenny : When you're careless with other people Mr BARNUM...you bring ruin upon
yourself.
BARNUM : I have risked everything.
Jenny : Well, so did I. And it seems we've both lost.
BARNUM : What does that mean?
Jenny : That’s goodbye Mr BARNUM.
(Jenny storms off the stage_
SCENE 16
(The Circus outside)
(Crowd shouting, ‘Fire!’)
Crowd : Fire! Out of the way. Fire! Hurry, it's coming from the circus.
BARNUM : Phillip, is everyone out? Is everyone okay? The animals?
Phillip Carlyle : We set them free. What else could we do?
(Everyone helps each other from the fire and begins to sing…)
TATTOOED PERSON: Figured you'd end up here.
LETTIE : Feeling sorry for yourself?
BARNUM : Folks if you have come to get paid, the money's gone. All of it.
WD : You just don't get it. Our own mothers were ashamed of us. Hide us our whole lives.
Charles : Then you pull us out of the shadows. And now you are giving upon us too.
Irish Giant : But you gave us a real family. And the circus...
LETTIE: That was our home.
World’s Heaviest Man : We want our home back.
BARNUM hand over a paper to Littie )
LETTIE : The bank said no?
BARNUM : Emphatically. And repeatedly. I don't think there is a bank left in this
country...I can fool into loaning me more money, so...I'm really sorry to disappoint you all.
Charles : Don't worry, BARNUM. We've gotten used to it by now.
Phillip Carlyle : You know, BARNUM...when I first met you...I had an inheritance...and
an invitation to every party in town. And now thanks to you. All that's gone. All that's left
is this friendship, love and work that I adore. You brought joy into my life.
LETTIE : Into all our lives.
All : Yeah.
BARNUM : I need a bank who takes joy as collateral.
Phillip Carlyle : They may not… But I will. I own 10% of the show. Knowing who I was
working for...I had the good sense to take my cut weekly.
BARNUM : Phillip, I can't let you gamble it on me…
Phillip Carlyle: Sure you can.
WD : Don't turn sensible on us now.
(CHARITY and the girls come stand next to BARNUM)
Phillip Carlyle : I don’t know if we are going to afford a building
BARNUM : We don’t need a building all we need is a Tent
Phillip Carlyle : Partners.
BARNUM : Partners.
Epilogue
(BARNUM Circus)
BARNUM :Gives him his hat
Phillip Carlyle : What are you going to do?
BARNUM : Watching my girls grow up. The show must go on
All : Come on.

Colossal we calm these renegades
in the rain
where the lost get found in the
crown of the circus cage.
Don't fight it, it's coming for you,
running at ya.
It's only this moment, don't care
what comes after.
It's blinding outside and I think
that you know.
Just surrender 'cause you're calling
and you wanna go.
Where it's covered in all the
coloured lights.
Where the runaways are running
the night. Impossible comes true,
intoxicating you.
Oh, this is the greatest show. We
light it up,
we won't come down.
And the sun can't stop us now.
Watching it come true,
it's taking over you.
Oh, this is the greatest show. It's
everything you ever want. It's
everything you ever need.
And it's here right in front of you.
This is where you wanna be.
It's everything you ever want. It's
everything you ever need.
And it's here right in front of you.
This is where you wanna be.
