NARRATOR: ABOUT A FEW DECADES AGO, IN COLOMBIA LOTS OF FAMILIES WERE

FORCED TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES DUE TO WHAT WAS KNOWN AS “THE COLOMBIAN
CONFLICT”, EL CONFLICTO ARMADO DE COLOMBIA. IT STARTED AS A POLITICAL
REVOLUTION THAT ENDED UP IN TRAGEDY FOR LOTS OF FAMILIES THAT LOST
EVERYTHING, BECAUSE OF THE WAR, SPECIALLY THOSE WHO LIVED IN SMALL
TOWNS AROUND THE COUNTRY, WITH NO POWER OR MONEY. ENCANTO, IS BASED
ON THE STORIES OF THE FAMILIES THAT HAD TO GO THROUGH THE CHALLENGING
EXPERIENCE OF LEAVING THEIR LANDS AND STARTING ALL OVER AGAIN.
ALTHOUGH ENCANTO IS A FICTION STORY, IT HAS REPRESENTATIVE FEATURES
OF COLOMBIA AND ITS CULTURE. WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS SHORT PIECE OF
ART WHILE YOU ALSO LEARN A LITTLE FROM THE MUSIC, THE LANGUAGE AND
THE STORY.

Abuela Alma is on the stage showing her back. She starts talking and
telling the story of the MIRACLE. The people of the town are sitting
around her listening to the story.

ABUELA ALMA: Long ago, when my three babies had just been born, your
Abuelo Pedro and I were forced to flee our home. And though many
joined us, hoping to find a new home... we could not escape the
dangers... and your Abuelo was lost. But in our darkest moment... we
were given... a miracle. (She turns around holding the candle.) The
candle became a magical flame that could never go out and it blessed
us with a refuge in which to live. A place of wonder...

ALL: An Encanto...

Three kids from the town enter the stage showing a lot of excitement.
PUMPED JUANCHO is drinking coffee.

PUMPED JUANCHO: Hey! When’s the magic gift happen?!

LITTLE ALEJANDRA: The ceremony is tonight.

INNOCENT CECILIA: Who’s ceremony is it?

PUMPED JUANCHO: Antonio's!

LITTLE ALEJANDRO: What’s his gift?!

INNOCENT CECILIA: We’re gonna find out.

PUMPED JUANCHO: What’s Mirabel’s gift?!

LITTLE ALEJANDRA: She never tells!

INNOCENT CECILIA: Let’s ask her!

The kids go out of stage and come back pulling and pushing Mirabel.

ALL KIDS: Mirabel, Mirabel, Mirabel! Tell us, tell us, what’s your
gift!

MIRABEL: (playful teasing) Who’s asking?

ALL KIDS: Us!

MIRABEL: Well, “us,” I can’t just talk about myself... I’m only part
of the amazing Madrigals.

ALL KIDS: Who’s all the amazing Madrigals?

MIRABEL: Aw, you’re not gonna leave me alone, are you? Oh here we
go…

Music starts “The family madrigal” all the characters enter and dance
together.

The music stops, and everybody goes out of the stage.

LITTLE ALEJANDRA: So Mirabel, what’s your gift?

DOLORES pops up out of nowhere.

DOLORES: Oh, Mirabel didn’t get one.

DOLORES Heads off. The kids look back to Mirabel, feeling like
they’ve been duped.

INNOCENT CECILIA: You didn’t get a gift?

Mirabel opens her mouth to try to spin this bad news, but before she
speaks, Little Alejandra interrupts.

LITTLE ALEJANDRA: If I was you, I’d be really sad.

MIRABEL: Well, my little friend I am not, because the truth is, gift
or no gift, I am just as special as the rest of my family.

All around Mirabel her amazing family does amazing things. The kids
look at her like she’s delusional.

ISABELA: Who wants more pink? (throwing flowers

LUISA: Alright guys, where do I drop the piano?

PEPA: I made a rainbow!

CAMILO: Hey nice job over there, yeah yeah.

ABUELA ALMA: Luisa, the piano goes upstairs.

LUISA: I’m on it. (nearly runs over Mirabel) Careful, sis!

INNOCENT CECILIA: Maybe your gift is being in denial.

Mirabel thinks about that and looks around while the kids leave. She
tries to carry a box to try to help the family organize but it’s
clearly too heavy for her. Casita tries to help her. LUISA comes to
help her and tries to put her on a side.

LUISA: Come sis, I’ll help you with that. It’s clearly too much for
you. Why don’t you go and sit somewhere? You know you don’t have to
help us with this. We got it!

AGUSTIN: That’s right mi cielo, why don’t you come with me and sit
over here, and enjoy the show while the others do the hard work, as I
do everytime! Oh I know… I’ll get some pop corn!

AGUSTIN leaves MIRABEL sitting on a chair and she stands again to try
to reach the heavy box, hindering everyone around.

PEPA: My baby’s night has to be perfect, and it’s not perfect and
people are going to be coming and nothing’s ready, the whole town
will be here…

FÉLIX: Pepi, Pepi, Pepita - you’re tornadoing the flowers, the

flowers mi amor!

ISABELA: Did someone say “flowers?”

Isabela walks around and flowers bloom all around her. MIRABEL looks
at her like she’s showing off.

FÉLIX: Our angel, our angel.

PEPA: Thank you, Isabelita. You’re always so helpful.

ISABELA: Oh, it’s nothing.

Isabela runs into Mirabel who’s trying to help but not helping much.

ISABELA: Uch, a little sisterly advice: if you weren’t always trying

too hard you wouldn’t be in the way.

MIRABEL: Actually, Isa, this is called helping, and I’m not in the
way…

Mirabel collides with Camilo and falls. Isabela rolls her eyes.
JULIETA: (cleaning Mirabel’s clothes for her fall) Whoa. Mi vida, you
okay? You don’t have to over-do it.

MIRABEL: I know, Mamá, I just want to do my part like the rest of the
family.

AGUSTÍN: She’s right, Amor, you’re doing great just the way you are
mi vida. When me and your Tio Félix married into the family,
outsiders who had no gift, never ever would,
surrounded by the exceptional, it was easy to feel... “un-ceptional”

MIRABEL: …okay, Papi.

AGUSTÍN: I’m just saying I get it

Julieta jams an AREPA in Agustín’s mouth

JULIETA: (to Agustín) Eat.

AGUSTÍN: Corazon, remember you have nothing to prove.

JULIETA: Yeah, remember... nothing to prove!

Mirabel goes back to try to help the others and Casita tries to help
her. Agustín gives Julieta a look like “we nailed it.” He sees that
Julieta looks concerned and matches her concerned face. Mirabel keeps
trying to help but running into people and making everything fall.

ABUELA ALMA: Mirabel, I know you want to help. But tonight must go
perfectly. The whole town relies on our family, on our gifts. So the
best way for... some of us to help is... to step aside, let the rest
of the family do what they do best. Okay?

Abuela looks at Mirabel with a tight-lipped smile, an awkward beat.

Mirabel nods sadly.

MIRABEL: Mm-hmm.

ABUELA ALMA: Pepa, you have a cloud!

PEPA: (overly emotional) I know, Mamá, but now I can’t find Antonio!
What do you want from me?!

Felix and Isabella try to help Pepa to relax. Casita shows Mirabel
where Camilo is and pushes Antonio out of his hiding place. Mirabel
gives Casita and Antonio a look and Casita pushes Antonio to Pepa.
PEPA: Ay mi amor! But where were you!

DOLORES: Ok, we found Antonio, I think We’re ready! Everyone, this is

about to start, I hear people from the town coming now!

ANTONIO: Oh I’m so nervous.

MIRABEL: Nervous? You have nothing to worry about. You’re gonna get
your gift and open that door... and it’s gonna be the coolest ever. I
know it.

ANTONIO: What if it doesn’t work?

MIRABEL: Well... in that impossible scenario... you’d stay here in

the nursery... with me, forever!!! And I’d get you all to myself
(playful).

ANTONIO: I wish you could have a door.

Mirabel considers this for a moment, it clearly pains her but she
puts on a brave face for Antonio.
MIRABEL: You know what? You don’t have to worry about me, ‘cause I
have an amazing family... and an amazing house, and an amazing you.
And seeing you get your special gift and your door... that’s gonna
make me way more happy than anything.

DOLORES: Abuela says... it’s time.

Pepa goes to Antonio and hugs him with a proud face.

PEPA: We’ll be waiting at your door!

FÉLIX: Okay, okay, vamo, vamo, vamo.

CAMILO: (as félix) “Okay, okay, Vamo, vamo, vam--”

MIRABEL: All right hombrecito, ready? Here you go, Parcero!

Everybody stands in the middle making a way for Antonio to walk

through.

ABUELA ALMA: Fifty years ago, in our darkest moment, this candle
blessed us with
a miracle. And the greatest honor of our family has been to use our
blessings to serve this beloved community. Tonight, we come together
once more as another steps into the light... to make us proud. The
crowd cheers and Antonio steps forward.

Antonio Start walking in.

ABUELA ALMA: Toñito, will you use your gift to honor our miracle?
Will you serve this community and strengthen our home?

Everybody bent down to Antonio waiting for an answer. He takes his

time and hesitates to speak. There’s a lot of tension waiting for
Antonio’s answer.

ANTONIO: Yes Abuela, I promise to serve this community.

Everybody cheers up and starts throwing flowers and plants. Salsa

Music on, everyone starts dancing.

FÉLIX: WEPA ANTONIO! Vaya, vaya.

As everyone cheers and we capture the family’s celebration, Mirabel

watches in the shadows from the side, with a clear sad face.
Everybody goes to the back of the stage where they continue dancing
and celebrating without noticing Mirabel’s absence. Mirabel walks
away with Casita trying to support her.

MIRABEL: (to audience) Am I too late for a miracle...?

One roof tile falls next to her, breaking. Curious, Mirabel picks up
the broken tile and analyzes it.

MIRABEL: Casita...?

Casita looks like is not feeling well. In the background people

continue dancing and not realizing that the house is falling apart.
We hear a noise like an earthquake. Mirabel gets nervous and runs to
the family.

MIRABEL: THE HOUSE IS IN DANGER! THE HOUSE IS IN DANGER!

Everyone stops and looks at her, the music stops. Abuela stares at
Mirabel, concerned.

MIRABEL: (out of breath) The tiles were falling and there were cracks
everywhere and… Casita is in danger!!!
Everyone looks around but they don’t see any problem. Casita stares
at Mirabel too like she’s crazy and everything is actually ok.People
in the party begin to murmur uncomfortably. Abuela clocks this and
looks to Mirabel. Mirabel looks around and realizes that there are no
cracks.

MIRABEL: What? No, that’s --- the cracks were there, they were...
everywhere. The house was in trouble, the, the candle was...

Isabela looks at Mirabel and scoffs. Abuela looks at the candle, then
back to Mirabel, embarrassed and disappointed.

MIRABEL: Abuela, I promise…

ABUELA ALMA: That’s enough.

As nervous whispers build within the crowd, Abuela gives a pointed

look to Mirabel, then puts on her “face of confidence” and turns to
address the crowd.

ABUELA ALMA: There is nothing wrong with La Casa Madrigal. The magic
is strong... and so are the drinks! Please music! ¡A bailar, a
bailar!

As people head back into the party, Julieta approaches Mirabel,

concerned. The House delivers an arepa to Julieta, who moves to
Mirabel.

JULIETA: I wish you could see yourself the way I do. You are perfect,
just like this. You’re just as special as anyone else in this family.

Julieta gives Mirabel a big embarrassing kiss on the cheek and hug.

MIRABEL: Mamá!
JULIETA: Ay, te amo, cosa linda.

MIRABEL: I know what I saw.

JULIETA: Mira, my brother Bruno lost his way in this family... I

don’t want the same for you. Get some sleep mi amor, and tomorrow
everything’s going to be better. You’ll feel better tomorrow.

Julieta leaves. Mirabel stays on the stage alone Thinking .

MIRABEL: I’m not crazy, I know what I saw. The house is in danger and
I need to do something. What if we lose the Miracle? I have to save
the Miracle…I will save the miracle.

Mirabel gets ready to go and starts her mission, and the house
follows her and brings her bag and things to go. Once she’s ready to
start she realizes she’s missing something.

MIRABEL: Espera... How do I save a miracle?

The House pantomimes back, it has no idea. Mirabel thinks for a

moment.

MIRABEL: Oh, I have no idea, but I think… what if… I could ask
Dolores, because I know she listens to everything in this house…

DOLORES: (popping in) Don’t count on me, I can’t talk about what I
hear in this house, my lips are sealed, and I have no Idea about
anything…although, I know that Luisa has been complaining about a
tick on her eye, apparently she doesn’t feel as strong anymore. And
Tia Julieta prepared an arepa that could not heal Abuela’s headache
this morning. And Camilo could not turn into Antonio during lunch to
have double portions of food. Also I heard Isabella saying that she
might not be totally happy with the idea of marrying Mariano and Tia
Pepa having trouble getting rid of an electric storm while she was
having a shower. But besides that, and the fact that the cracks on
the house seem to be related to Tio bruno, I don’t have any
information to share. Sorry I can’t be of more help…

Dolores leaves without letting Mirabel say anything back to her.

Mirabel is shocked by all the information that Dolores just shared
and thinks about the last part of it.

MIRABEL: That’s it… It is related to tio Bruno!

CASITA: (whispering) We don't talk about Bruno!

MIRABEL: If I only knew what happened with tio Bruno…

Dolores, Camilo and Luisa, Antonio and Agustin walk in passing by.

TOGETHER: ¡No se habla de Bruno!

Isabella, Julieta, Pepa and Felix walk by.

MIRABEL: What’s the matter? I just want to know where tio Bruno is…
More people keep entering around Mirabel.

TOGETHER: ¡No se habla de Bruno!

MIRABEL: I don’t understand. What’s the big deal about Tio Bruno?

CAMILO: Tio Bruno was always mysterious. He would walk silently

around the house in the shadows, where no one could see his face and
say no word. Nobody wanted to hear a word from Tio Bruno. Nothing he
would say would ever be a good omen.

ISABELLA: Excuse me? I’m sorry to disappoint you dear family, but I
was never scared of Tio Bruno’s prophecies. Why would I? Tio Bruno
was gentle and nice, he would always say good things to me. He even
mentioned I would be the beautiest girl in the town. Which I clearly
am.

ANTONIO: I heard that Tio Bruno used to be surrounded by rats! Rats

are cute, they are always asking me for food. They also told me where
Tio Bruno…

SEÑORA OSMA: He said my restaurant would go bankrupt, and I would

have a bunch of debts. He said I’ll become addicted to eating my own
food and my clients would complain about me tasting their plates.

OSVALDO OROZCO: He said that my eating habits weren’t healthy and

that I’d start having stomach issues. He even said I would become
old!!!

SEÑOR FLOREZ: Everything he said would become true. So we preferred

not hearing any prophecies from him, it is just a lot better like
that. He wasn’t helpful at all. So you better not mention his name
again… We don’t talk about Bruno!

MIRABEL: Oh please… I need to know what happened to Tio Bruno!

The Madrigal family, plus MARIANO and his ABUELA GUZMAN sit at the dining table.
There’s a lot of tension as the dinner is happening

ABUELA ALMA: The Guzmans and the Madrigals together will be so good
for the Encanto.

ABUELA GUZMAN: Yes, then let’s hope tonight is not a horrible

disaster. My Marianito was so excited to come and see his dear
Isabella.

ABUELA ALMA: To a perfect night. Salud!

EVERYONE: Salud!

ABUELA GUZMAN: My Mariano has been waiting for this moment

for so long.

Bruno sneaks around the dinner table hoping no one sees

him trying to heal the walls of the Casita. The family
members start noticing one by one and getting nervous
while talking. Mirabel is the last one noticing him.

MARIANO: Yes, in fact, I have to say I could not wait a

minute longer to be here, sharing with this amazing
family. Although I’d like to mention that at some point I
thought that becoming part of this family could be a
little challenging for me. Having dinner with all these…
exceptional people…

ABUELA GUZMAN: Ay Marianito, you have nothing to worry

about, mi vida. You are as exceptional as the rest of the
family. It’s not like all of them have a “special” gift,
right? (looking at Mirabel).

MIRABEL: Right…

MARIANO: Well, I do have a gift, I’d like to sing a song

for you!

ISABELLA: (Pretending to be flattered but actually feeling

uncomfortable) Oh please…

AGUSTIN: (seats between Isabella and Mariano) alright,

alright, you’ve got talents we got it.

PEPA: I don’t know if I’m in the mood of a song right now.

CAMILO: (trying to distract people from seeing Tio Bruno)

Oh I’m so hungry, Abuela! Are there more empanadas?

ANTONIO: Ohhh no no no, I don’t want empanadas, how about

a bandejita paisa!?

PEPA: (Very nervous and getting clouds all around. Casita

gets around her trying to make the clouds go away.)
B-B-but Toñito mi amor, since when do you eat so much?

FELIX: Niños, remember that we only have arepas, nada de

Bandeja paisa ni empanadas.

JULIETA: I could make some empanadas if you want. Pepa,

why don’t you come with me to the kitchen.

PEPA: Sure, I’m coming with you.

ABUELA ALMA: Ok, enough! What’s going on here? Nobody's

going anywhere, it’s not time to eat yet, we’re just
having the toast.
Mirabel realizes about TIO BRUNO walking around and she runs after
him.

MIRABEL: HEY

Tios Bruno stops and tries to run away but he can’t so he stops
and he crosses his fingers and holds his breath.

MIRABEL: Tio Bruno?

Everybody looks surprised, There are pieces of the casita on the floor and Bruno tries to
repair them. Casita is happy with Bruno and thanks Bruno for healing it all the time.

TIO BRUNO: Sana sana, colita de rana.

MIRABEL: Wait, have you been in here... patching the cracks?

Bruno looks up at all of the patched cracks.

TIO BRUNO: Oh that? No, no, no, no, no, I’m too scared to go near
those things. All the patching’s done by Hernando.

ANTONIO: Who is... Hernan…

TIO BRUNO: (different voice) --I’m Hernando and I’m scared of

nothing. (takes off hood, regular voice) It’s actually me. I used to
say my real gift was acting. (yet another voice) I’m Jorge, I make
the spackle.

DOLORES: How long have you been... Hiding here? (realizing) You never
left.

TIO BRUNO: (sentimental) Well, I- I wanted to leave because I know

that nobody wants me around. But I couldn’t just go and leave Casita
falling apart. (changes his mood to happy again) So I just hid where
I knew nobody would be affected by my terrible visions and I could
watch Telenovelas.

CASITA: (Romantic) Their love could never be.

LUISA: I don’t understand.

CASITA: Well, because she’s his aunt and she has amnesia, so she
can’t remember that she’s his aunt, you see it’s like a very
forbidden kind of…
LUISA: I don’t understand why you “left,” but didn’t “leave?”

TIO BRUNO: (avoiding eye-contact) Oh, well... because you know the
mountains around the Encanto are pretty tall... and uh - you know
like I said, free food... and everything... (to the CASITA) Yeah, you
casita, you love to bring me free food, don’t ya? I’m always hungry,
never satisfied...

MIRABEL: Tio Bruno…

TIO BRUNO: Well, My gift wasn’t helping the family... but uh... but I
love my family, you know... I just don’t know how to... I just don’t
know... I can’t help them and I know they didn’t want me there… I was
just bothering everybody with my prophecies. The day I left, I had a
vision about you. But I didn’t know how to help you, and I didn’t
want to hurt you or the family.

The family starts getting closer to him.

MIRABEL: I know how you feel… I feel like that too. I just... wanted
to make the family proud of me... just once. But if I should stop...
if I’m hurting my family... just tell me. Am I the one who’s
destroying the miracle?
TIO BRUNO: I can’t tell you... Because I don’t know. I had this
vision but it wasn’t very clear, sometimes I just don’t know what
they mean. I saw the magic in danger... our house… breaking... and
then... and then, and then... I saw you. But the vision was
confusing, there was no one answer... no clear fate. Like your future
was undecided. But I knew how it was gonna look, I knew what everyone
would think because I’m Bruno and everyone always assumes the
worst... so... so...

MIRABEL: So you left... to protect me...?

TIO BRUNO: I don’t know which way it’ll go... but my guess... the
family, the Encanto, the fate of the miracle itself, it’s all gonna
come down to you. Or maybe I’m wrong.

CAMILO: So it is all true. Casita is in danger… the miracle is in

danger?

LUISA: Is that why I’m losing my strength? Are we all gonna lose our
gifts?

PEPA: (dramatic) This is the end of the Encanto!!!!

FÉLIX: Ya ya Pepi, relax mi amor.

TIO BRUNO: Oh you see? That’s why I left! I just came and ruined
everyone’s lives again. I’m sorry guys I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…

ABUELA ALMA: No! it’s not the end of the encanto, and it’s not your
fault…Brunito. All this time, I’ve been so hard on you. (looks at
Mirabel) and you…I was given a Miracle, a second chance. And I was so
afraid to lose it, that I lost sight of who our miracle was for. And
I am so sorry. You never hurt our family Mirabel, neither did you
Bruno. We are broken, because of me.

MIRABEL: Abuela, I can finally see. You lost your home, you lost
everything. You’ve suffered so much all alone, so it would never
happen again. We were saved because of you, we were given a miracle
because of you, we are a family because of you. And nothing could
ever be broken that we can’t fix together.

ABUELA: I asked the heavens for help, and they sent me you. And you,
Brunito!

The family hugs together.

ALL OF YOU

Look at this home, we need a new foundation

It may seem hopeless but we'll get by just fine
Look at this family, a glowing constellation
So full of stars and everybody wants to shine
But the stars don't shine, they burn
And the constellations shift
I think it's time you learn
You're more than just your gift
And I'm sorry I held on too tight
Just so afraid I'd lose you too
The miracle is not some magic that you've got
The miracle is you, not some gift, just you
The miracle is you
All of you, all of you
Okay, so we're gonna talk about Bruno? (That's Bruno)
Yeah, there's a lot to say about Bruno
I'll start, okay
Pepa, I'm sorry 'bout your wedding, didn't mean to be upsetting
That wasn't a prophecy, I could just see you were sweating
And I wanted you to know that your bro loves you so
Let it in, let it out, let it rain, let it snow, let it go
That's what I'm always saying, bro
Got a lotta 'pologies I got to say
(Hey, we're just happy that you're here, okay?) Uh, but
Come into the light, the triplets all reunite
And no matter what happens we're gonna find our way
Yo, I knew he never left, I heard him every day
What's that sound? (Oh, oh)
I think it's everyone in town
Hey
Lay down your load (lay down your load)
We are only down the road (we are only down the road)
We have no gifts, but we are many
And we'll do anything for you
It's a dream when we work as a team (all of you, all of you)
You're so strong
Yeah, but sometimes I cry (all of you, all of you)
So do I
I may not be as strong but I'm getting wiser
Yeah, I need sunlight and fertilizer
Come on, let's plant something new and watch it fly
Straight up to the sky, let's go
The stars don't shine, they burn
The constellations glow
The seasons change in turn
Would you watch our little girl go?
She takes after you

COLOMBIA, MI ENCANTO

Colombia
Noche de fiesta
Todos vienen a celebrar
Noche de fiesta
Todos llegan para gozar
Sigue bailando
Contento en mi paraíso
Y revelando
Milagros en cada piso
Encanto
Encanto
Colombia, te quiero tanto
Que siempre me enamora tu encanto
Colombia, te quiero tanto
Que sigas bendiciendo tu encanto
Colombia
Encanto.
