Black
We hear the sounds of nature- crickets, birds, and the rustle of leaves. Then
slowly, the voice of an elderly woman filled with warmth spoke.
Abuela: open your eyes
Lights turn on, showing Mirabel, wearing oversized glasses, a face of curiosity
She opens her eyes to the flame of a candle.
Mirabel: A candle? Did you get it from the candle makers' workshop?
Abuela:(chuckles) No child this candle holds the miracle that was given to our
family
Mirabel: What miracle abuela?
The spotlight switches to Alma
FLASHBACK
Alma is a young woman, with her husband and three children, the light of the
candle burning nearby
On voiceover
Alma (V.O): When our children were born, your abuelo Pedro and I were forced
to flee our home. And we were joined by many, trying to find a new home. But
your abuelo was taken by the strife.
Pedro hands Abuela the candle as he throws his arms out protectively as...
marauders approach. As they advance, Pedro vanishes into the wind in front of
Abuela, who collapses.
Julieta: Mirabel, it’s time
Abuela: (Gets up) but in our darkest times, we were blessed with a miracle- one
that provided us with hope and refuge.
The candle burns brighter, mountains close in and the veil on the casita is
removed
Abuela: (said simultaneously with the above movement)This candle gave us our
dear casita these mountains that surround us and our miracles the very thing
that makes your mother's food so special apart from their taste I mean
Family Madrigal song starts older Mirabel enters from the left side entrance(of
the oat) with the kids with abuela leads the younger one off stage through the
right side exit(of the stage)

Song: Madrigal Family

Abuela: Mirabel what are you doing?
Mirabel: Oh Abuela, I was just answering their questions about the family. You
know kids these days are so curious.
Kid 1: Mirabel was just about to tell us her super awesome miracle gift
Other kids:( Nod) Yes yes yes what's your super awesome miracle gift Mirabel
tell us
Dolores: oh she doesn't have one, she never got one
The children all stare at her
Mirabel: haha but you know what I'm just as special as all of the others in the
family gift or no gift
Kid 2: I think your gift is being in denial (cutely and stretched out)
All kids walk away disappointed
Dolores: I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have…
Isabel walks up behind Mirabel
Isabella: You know they're right so maybe you should stop trying so hard.
Wouldn't want to mess up another miracle ceremony.
Mirabel: I’ve always wanted the best for the family. I'm just trying to help-
Isabel: The only way some people can help is by doing nothing. Keep that in
mind sister
Villager 1: Hey Mirabel this is for you. They're called extra special gift fireworks
for the ones with no gift.
Hands it over
Mirabel: Oh thank you umm
(Mirabel exits the stage, scene changes to the kitchen with her mother.
Sets down crackers)
Mirabel: phew the ___ gave that to me. We can use that tonight. Is there
anything else I can do? I cleaned the rooms and got the groceries and I als-
Mother: Mirabel, Mirabel there's nothing else I assure you your sisters are taking
care of everything don't worry why don't you go take a rest darling
Mother takes crackers and walks off stage
Mirabel: Alright I'll just give Abuela my gift(to Mother while she walks off stage)
Mirabel goes to Abuela’s door and puts down her handmade candle holder
Abuela: mirabel what are you doing
Turns around but accidentally stomps all over her gift
Mirabel: oh nothing I just made these for you and I wanted it to be a surprise
look
Picks up crumpled and torn gift
Mirabel: Well I made it for you I'd just well I…(Dejectedly fiddles)
Abuela: Mirabel I appreciate that you are trying to help but maybe it's better if
you relax it’s the best way you could help I need this night to be perfect, no
mistakes(looks at the crumpled gift and takes it from her hand and walks away
only to stop and say depressingly)we can't have this one turn out to be like the
last
Continues of stage
Mirabela walks off stage dejected
The scene changes to her room walks in dejected with a present box in hand
Mirabel: Everybody's looking for you, well I guess this handmade surprise gift
isn't for you then. Ding this box will self-destruct in 5 4 3 2-(slowly lowers it
during countdown)
Antonio snatches the gift from her hands and she slightly jumps smiles and sits
down on the floor beside the bed making Antonio poke his head out too
Mirabel: Nervous?
Antonio: Very…
Mirabel: Scared?
Antonio: Yeah…
Mirabel: Wanna hide under here forever?
Antonio: No it’s just everyone's gonna be looking at me and wh-what if I mess
up? What if tonight isn't perfect?
Mirabel: Antonio you are the best roommate I could ask for and I will miss you
but you have to do this and don't worry it is going to be fine you have the well
wishes of so many and in all of our hearts we know you are going to get a gift
just as special as you are. ( taps on his nose playfully but reassuringly)
People crowd the stage busy with preparations allowing time for scene change
and exit of characters and change in the background

We see Antonio run to his family

Pepa: There you are (Sigh ot relief and hugs Antonio)
Camillo: We we’re so worried, I almost had to pretend to be you (Playfully
punches Antonio)
Pepa and her family laugh and look happy. Mirabel looks dejected but shakes it
off and leaves.

Abuela: everyone in position the guests are arriving you all know what to do and
Mirabel just uh stay out of the way tonight needs to go perfectly
Mirabel: (simultaneously)Perfectly I know I know and it will-
Guests flood in midway showing the family members guiding everyone they all
form a pathway still muttering and the light shines on Antonio's door
Everyone: (gasps and whispers to one another)It's time
Spotlight switches to Abuela
Abuela: it is time to invite a new gift into our family and further ensure the safety
and preservation of our sacred land and the people who make it so sacred as
well.
(Everyone looks at Antonio while a second spotlight is shone upon him. Antonio
stays still fidgeting with his fingers looking around nervously. He spots Mirabel
and gives out his hand. A third spotlight lands upon Mirabel as the path is cleared
by the people who start muttering again. An awkward exchange of nods and
intense eye contact is taking place between Antonio and the reluctant Mirabel.
She steps forward to take his hand and everyone is surprised. When they reach
the top Mirabel steps aside and gives a nod which is reciprocated by Antonio.
Antonio looks at Abuela and takes hold of the candle with her.)

Abuela: *insert speech abuela gives*

Antonio: I-I do
He lets go of the candle and slowly and nervously places his hand on the door
and the door illuminates. A bird comes and sits on Antonio's shoulder
Antonio: (nods) Uhuh uhuh I understand you, of course, you can.
All animals enter through the front entrance
An extra musical number with the animals and Antonio can be added here
Villager: Hey hey everybody gather up to take a photo
Everyone gets included in these pictures except her. The spotlight needs to be on
the people who take the photos and Mirabel who gets upset at this sight.

Song: Waiting on a Miracle

Mirabel: Abuela the house is in danger! The walls were cracking the lights on
our doors we flickering everything was tumbling like there was an earthquake-
Abuela: Child do not try-
Mirabel: The candle was going out
Abuela: Show me.
(Everyone gasps abuela storms following her out to a perfectly normal house)
Mirabel: What? No- that’s— the cracks were there…everywhere. The- the candle…
Isabella: (Scoffs) You had to ruin today as well (Abuela looks disappointed)
Mirabel: No wait, I swear- I even hurt my hand (shows hand)
Isabella: You could have easily pretended to-
Abuela: That’s enough.
(Abuela turns to face the crowd.)
Abuela: There is nothing wrong with La Casa Madrigal. The magic is strong…
and so are the drinks!
(People head back into the party and Julieta approaches Mirabel. Julieta takes an
arepa to heal Mirabel’s hand.)
Augustin notices how things become awkward and signals to Luisa who
brings over the piano.
Agustin: Who wants some music?! (Everybody cheers)
To which Agustin starts playing a melodic tune to clear the silence.

Mirabel: If it was all in my head Ma, how did I hurt my hand? I would never want
to ruin Antonio’s night. Is that what you think?
Julieta: What I think is that today’s ceremony was very hard for you…
Mirabel: I was looking out for the family. And I might not be super-strong or
effortlessly perfect but…whatever…
Julieta: I wish you could see that you are perfect like this. You’re just as special
as anyone else in the family.
Julieta gives Mirabel the arepa, holds her hand, and heals her.
Mirabel: Mm-hmm sure. You just healed my hand with an arepa.
Julieta: I healed your hand (playfully) with my love for my daughter, with her
wonderful mind, big heart-
Mirabel: Stop.
Julieta: Cool glasses
Mirabel: Ma!
Julieta tries to hug Mirabel but she extricates herself
Mirabel: I know what I saw.
Julieta: (sighs) Mira, my brother lost his way in this family, I don’t want that for
you. Get some sleep
Set changes to Mirabel’s room
Mirabel laying down in her bed tilts her head and stares at the ceiling in
confusion lost in her thoughts
Mirabel: There is no way I made all that up… right?
Frustrated, Mirabel gets out of her bed and slowly opens the door not wanting to
wake anyone up. She looks up at the candle where the wall was covered in
cracks just moments before.
Mirabel rubs her hand along the stucco wall of Abuela’s window... no cracks...
but as she stares, confused... she hears a noise... It's ABUELA. She’s upset...
vulnerable. Mirabel’s never seen her like this. Abuela steps to the window and
opens her talking to a portrait of Pedro. Mirabel calmly listens.
Abuela: (Depressed and hopeless) Ay, Pedro... I need you. Cracks are in our
casita... If our family knew how vulnerable we truly are... What if our miracle is
dying? We cannot lose our home again.
tears start rolling from Abuela's eyes
Abuela: Why is this happening? Open my eyes. Please. If the answer is here
please help me find it! I beg you… Help me protect our family. Help me save our
miracle…
Abuela turns and heads back to her room. The focus shifts back to Mirabel
Mirabel realized that the cracks were real and that she was not crazy. The
instinct kicked into her mind “She needs to help her Abuela, save Casita, and save
the magic”.
Mirabel (confidently): I Will Save The Miracle
Mirabel rushes back into her room. She violently grabs her dress and her bag and
wears her shoes. The music starts to build up deeper and Deeper and then a
record crash!
Mirabel: Wait. How do I save a Miracle??
Mirabel: I figure out what’s happening to the miracle. (OFF THE HOUSE) Oh, I
have no idea, but there is one person in this family who hears everything about
everything...
Mirabel looks at a picture of her family and zeroes in on... DOLORES, her cousin
who hears everything.
Mirabel: So… If anyone knows what is happening to the magic. It's her.
Several AREPAS are picked up by... DOLORES, who is stacking her plate with
food. She looks oddly nervous. Behind her, Mirabel enters and locks on the
target.
MIRABEL: Dolores, hey. You know, out of all my older cousins, you’re like my
favorite cousin, so I feel like I can talk to you about anything, you can talk to me
about anything, like the problem with the magic last night that no one seemed
to worry about, but maybe you heard about that maybe I should know about.
Behind them is FÉLIX, who stands with THE REAL DOLORES
Felix: Camilo! Stop pretending to be Dolores so you can get seconds!
The “DOLORES” near Mirabel, morphs back into “Camilo.” The House takes his
food back and whacks his hand.
Camilo: Eh at least it was worth a shot!
The real Dolores goes to Mirabel and whispers in her ear
Dolores: The only one worried about the magic is you... and the rats
talking in the walls… oh, and Luisa. I heard her eye twitching all night.
Mirabel: Are you sure?
Dolores: Trust me, I hear everything it’s like a curse at times
A lightbulb goes off in Mirabel’s head. She looks over at Luisa, who is carrying a
table over with one hand.
Luisa: There we go!
Mirabel is on her way to question Luisa but before she can Abuela enters the
picture
Mirabel: Luisa-
Abuela: Come on everyone! Lets go. Lets go!
Mirabel takes Pepa's seat so she can sit beside Luisa
Pepa: Ayy Mirabel (Gets annoyed and takes another seat)
Mirabel: So Luisa-
She gets cut off by Abuela
Abuela: Family, we are all thankful for Antonio’s wonderful new... gift...
Abuela goes to her chair but finds COATIS in it.
Antonio: I told them to warm up your seat. Do you like it?
Antonio smiles at Abuela, who manages a smile back.
Abuela: Thank you, Toñito. I’m sure today we’ll find a way to put your blessings
to good use.... ...as must we all, we are the caretakers of this Encanto...
As Abuela continues, Mirabel leans over to Luisa.
Mirabel: Luisa, Dolores says you are totally freaking out about the magic. Any
chance you might know something about the magic last night-
Luisa’s eyes start twitching again
Mirabel(Screems): YOU DO!!
Abuela’s glare continues to linger on Mirabel
Mirabel: Abuela… I did not mean to-
Abuela: If you can't pay attention let me help you.
Mirabel: Well-you see-
Abuela: Casita.
The House MOVES Mirabel next to Abuela, away from Luisa.
Abuela: As I was saying, we must never take our miracle for granted. So, today
we’ll work twice as hard
Mirabel: (Trying to go towards Luisa) Yeah, I’ll help
Abela: Stop. First I have an announcement to make, I’ve spoken to the Guzmans
about Isabella’s proposal. Dolores, do we have a date?
Dolores: (Listens) Yup. Tonight. He wants five babies
Isabela nervously sprouts some flowers.
Abuela: How wonderful! A strong man with our perfect Isabela is sure to bring a
new generation of blessings to the family.
Camilo morphs into a snarky version of MARIANO,
Camillo: Isabella, excited much?
Isabela swats him with flowers to get him to stop.
Abuela: To family madrigal!
Everyone: To family madrigal!
As everyone gets up, Mirabel sees Luisa is gone. Mirabel heads after Luisa and --
SMACKS into Isabela, sending petals everywhere.
Isabela: Seriously, what’s your problem
Mirabel: Sorry, hey Luisa! Wait up!
As Luisa picks up a COUPLE OF DONKEYS, Mirabel awkwardly climbs over the
stone wall behind her.
Mirabel: Luisa, wait for me
Luisa looks back, sees Mirabel, moves faster
Mirabel: Tell me what’s going on with the magic. What exactly are you hiding?
Luisa: Nothing much, just finishing up chores. You should just go back home
Mirabel: Dolores said your eye was twitching and it never twitches. So tell me
what’s making you nervous?
Luisa: Nothing is wrong!
Mirabel: Tell me Luisa! What’s happening to the magic? If you don’t tell me
what’s wrong then something bad will happen to magic-
Luisa: NOTHING IS WRONG OKAY!
The DONKEYS are like, “YIKES.” Mirabel’s like “Whoa.” Luisa realizes this and
tries to play it off.
Luisa: Wow, uh that was just unexpected. Anyways why would anything be
wrong with the magic? I’m fine… fine, nothing’s making me nervous.
As Luisa smiles, trying to be casual, her eye twitches.
Mirabel: Luisa…your eye-it’s uh twitching
Unwilling to admit there’s a problem, Luisa gets in Mirabel’s face.

Song: Surface pressure

An awkward silence fills the air as Mirabel hugs Luisa.
Mirabel: (clears throat) I think- you have too much on your shoulders.
Luisa: Maybe I overdo it…
Mirabel: (barely able to breathe as she is squeezed by Luisa) Yeah...
Luisa: (anxiously) There is something you should know. Last night when you
saw the cracks, I felt…weak.
(Luisa finally lets go of Mirabel)
Mirabel: (confused) Wh-What?’
Villager: (angrily) LUISA, THE DONKEYS!
Luisa: On it.
Mirabel: Wait, wait, wait, what did you mean? What do you think is hurting the
magic?
(Luisa picks up a donkey and pulls Mirabel close to tell her a secret)
Luisa: No clue. But I heard the grown-ups once after Tio Bruno left. He had
some vision about it and it wasn’t all that great.
Mirabel: Tio Bruno? What was in his vision?
Luisa: No one knows, he left before anyone could find out. If something really is
wrong with the magic, visit Bruno’s tower. Find the vision.
(Luisa takes more donkeys and walks away)
Mirabel:(Yells after Luisa) Wait, how do you “find” a vision? What am I even
looking for?
Luisa: When you find it, you’ll know. Be careful though. The tower is off-limits for
a reason.
Mirabel heads back to the casa extremely confused. She sneaks past her family
members who are discussing the wedding and goes to Bruno’s tower. She
shoves open the door revealing a dusty, dark room. In front of her, sand spills in
from above, creating a curtain of sand, beyond which she can’t see.
Mirabel: Casita, can you turn off the sand?
The floor tiles came to a halt, indicating that the house could help her no
further.
Mirabel: So you can't help here…?

Narrator: The House responds in the same way as before: “No... and I’m worried
about you,” After all Mirabel has never been “without the house”

Mirabel: I have to do this; for you, for Abuela, and maybe a little for me…(looks
through sand)

As Mirabel steps through the “sandfall” she...falls! Mirabel falls face-first and
slides down a giant sand dune. She looks up to see... she’s in a towering room.
Mirabel: Woah
Mirabel sees a sign that reads “Your Future Awaits” with an arrow pointing to the
top. Hundreds of stairs
Mirabel (Determined): We got this!
(Toucan starts approaching)
Toucan: HELLO!
Mirabel (Confident/Joyful): At Least I will have a friend to-
(Toucan flies away)
Mirabel (Disappointed): Nope! You flew away immediately
(Mirabel’s eyes follow the Toucan till it reaches the top)
Mirabel: Alright.
Mirabel ( With no hope or energy) (talk-singing): Welcome to the family
Madrigal…
Mirabel (Takes a deep breath): There are so many stairs in the casa Madrigal…
You would think there would be another way to get so high cause we are magic,
but no. TIO BRUNO! YOUR ROOM IS THE WORST!!

After a while, Mirabel reaches the top only to find a gap in the path with a 100 ft
drop. Exasperatedly, she lets out a loud groan. As Mirabel takes a breath she
removes a rope railing and throws it over a boulder as an anchor. She exhales
and bravely swings over the drop.

Mirabel: (stunned) I-I did it! (pumps fists in the air)

(Mirabel turns to the entrance of Bruno’s “temple” and enters the dark room...
there’s an unusual circle of SAND in the middle, but there is no sign of anything
else. Confused... she steps out into the SAND)

Mirabel: (sighs) Empty.

(The wind shuts the door, Mirabel panics, stuck in the Darkness... but then... a
light. Something green...the sand itself seems to be glowing... Mirabel digs into
the sand and finds...a glowing shard. )

As Mirabel pulls more glowing pieces from the sand, she realizes they form some
kind of image. Bruno’s vision. She connects the shards to reveal…
Mirabel: Me? I’m the reason?

The entire cavern begins to shake, falling apart. Mirabel shoves the shards
into her bag. Mirabel bangs at the door desperately and then... jiggles the
handle. A wave of sand pushes her out to safety, almost sending her over the
cliff.
( Mirabel hurries out of Bruno’s room and runs into Abuela.)
Abuela: Where are you coming from in such a hurry?
Mirabel: Um- I just-
(Loud cries fill the moment. It’s the sound of…Luisa?)
LUISA My gift! I’m losing my gift!
Abuela: What?
Luisa: Mirabel and I were having this talk about me carrying too much, so I tried
not to carry so much but I felt bad so I grabbed the donkeys, and then when I
went to throw the donkeys in the barn, but they were... heavy
(Luisa runs off crying. Abuela looks at Mirabel, furious.)
Abuela: WHAT did you say to her?
Mirabel: Nothing- I don’t
(The town bell rings at this exact moment)
Abuela is torn. She has to help arrange Isabela’s engagement but she can’t
suppress this situation.
Abuela: Stay away from Luisa until I talk to her. We can’t have any problems
tonight. And whatever you’re doing, STOP IT!
(In Mirabel’s bedroom, shaking, she pulls out the shards.)
Mirabel: Why am I in your vision, Bruno?
Pepa: (loud thunder) Sorry, sorry. I was just picking up Tonito’s things when I
heard the name we do not speak.
Mirabel: Uh, Tia Pepa. If he had a vision about someone what would it mean?
Pepa: We don’t talk about Bruno.
Mirabel: I know its just-
Pepa: Mirabel!
Felix barges in
Felix: It would mean bad luck.
(look at Pepa glaring at him)
Felix: What? She needs to know Pepi.
Pepa: We don’t talk about Bruno.
Mirabel: What if you don’t understand what he saw?
Felix: Then you better figure it out…
Pepa: It’s always bad when Bruno’s involved
Felix: That’s right
(followed by We Don’t Talk About Bruno)

Song: We don't talk about Bruno

Agustin enters Mirabel’s room
Agustin: Miraboo. Got your party pants on, ‘cause-
Agustín stops as he sees the vision. He looks at Mirabel, concerned… Mirabel
looks at Agustín, and considers lying, but realizes she should just spill it
Mirabel: I... broke into Bruno’s tower, I found his last vision, the family’s in
trouble, the magic is dying, the house is breaking, Luisa’s gift is fading and I
think it’s all because of…me?
Agustín stares at Mirabel, stunned.
Mirabel: Pa?
Agustín then shoves the vision into his POCKETS.
Agustin: (anxiously) We stay quiet. Abuela wants tonight to be perfect, so until
the Guzmans leave, everything is alright. Just pretend nothing ever happened.
No one needs to know
Suddenly, they hear a noise and turn to see…Dolores. Her eyes tell them she
heard everything.
Dolores: (whispers) I know…I know everything…
Mirabel: She’s gonna tell everyone and they’re gonna hate me-
Abuela:(sweetly, but firmly) It’s time to eat!
Agustín smiles awkwardly and motions for Mirabel to follow him to the dining
room. Everyone is sitting in the dining room and preparing for what’s to happen
next. Abuela: A union between the Madrigals and Guzmans will be perfect for
the Encanto
Abuela Guzman: Indeed, I hope that all goes well tonight-no horrible disasters
(Judgemental look and tone)
Abuela: (chuckles, then toasts) To a perfect night. Salud!
Everyone: Salud!
Mirabel does her best to act normal as she maintains unwavering eye contact
with Dolores, who struggles to keep the secret in... but looks like she’s gonna pop
any minute.
Dolores: C-can I have an arepa? (The Casita gives her an arepa she stuffs it in
her mouth as an attemp to keep the secret)
Abuela Guzman: I’m sure all is well in La Casa Madrigal… but when it comes to
beloved Mariano, I thought it would be best to see for myself.
A bowl of avocado passes in front of Mirabel, blocking her view of Dolores.
Mariano: Anyone want Avocado?
Abuela Guzman: La Familia Madrigal has and will always remain a pillar of our
community…
As the avocado passes across the table, Mirabel now sees that Dolores couldn’t
hold out any longer and tells Camillo who chokes on his food. Everyone looks at
him-especially the Abuelas and Isabella.
Camillo: Sorry…The food’s so good
Felix: (Whispers)Camilo, fix your face
Camillo: Yeah…
Camilo looks at Mirabel, who is starting to panic that Camilo knows about the
secret vision as well. A pitcher of water passes in front of her.
Isabela: Need any water?
As the pitcher of water passes, Mirabel sees Camilo whispering to Felix. Felix's
eyes go wide and he chokes on water. Abuela, quietly panicking, tries to maintain
her composure
Abuela Alma: (Panicked and a little weirded out) Mirabel pass the cream,
please.
Mirabel smiles at Abuela Alma and turns to Agustin for the cream.
Mirabel: Pa, the cream, please
Augustin is next to mirabel. He tried to hand her the cream but his hands are
shaking like crazy. Mirabel Takes the cream and passes it to Abuela Alma. The
sound of thunder draws Mirabel’s attention to Pepa. Felix whispers into her ear
and a small hurricane forms over the area.
Abuela: (Clearly embarrassed) Uh… Pepa? The uh cloud.
Pepa: clear skies, clear skies, clear skies…
Julieta leans over to Pepa, concerned. Pepa whispers in Julieta’s ear. Julieta
flushes, then looks to Mirabel. Mirabel tries to avoid her mother’s gaze. But as
Mirabel looks down... she finds... TINY CRACKS beginning to form.
Mariano: Mirabel?
Mirabel freaked out, sits up fast, bonking her head on the underside of the table,
and then pops up.
Mariano: Everything…alright?
Agustin: Everything’s perfect, she is just really excited for you to propose to
Isabella, which you should do as fast as you can Marian-
Mirabel: Yeah!
Mariano: Yeah…I was just about too…
Mirabel: You were about to! That's great!
Mirabel swivels Isabela’s chair toward Mariano.
Abuela Guzman: (A little weirded out) Well since everyone here has such talent-
Mariano wanted to sing a song. Luisa, could you get the piano, please?
Luisa, at the end of the table, moans, fighting tears. She marches to “get the
piano” knowing she can’t lift it.
Luisa: (Through tears) Y-yeah. I’ll go and lift the piano…
Mirabel: Well you see it’s actually a family tradition to sing after.
On “AFTER” Mirabel shoves Mariano down on one knee, motions for him to begin.
Mariano: (Takes a deep breath) Dearest Isabella the most graceful of all the
Madrigals.
As the cracks spread, the House starts to malfunction. Mirabel moves behind
Mariano, shielding the family from seeing the cracks. Under Agustín, Mirabel
sees the Coatis take the shards of Bruno’s vision
Mariano: (Unaware) Who is absolutely the most perfect flower in the entire
Encanto…
Luisa tries to shove a piano, making horrible scraping noises. The coatis are
almost done assembling the vision. Mirabel sees them and panics.
Mariano: WILL YOU MARRY ME?
No longer able to contain herself, Mirabel lunges at Coatis.
Mirabel: Nooo!
Luisa falls to the ground, CRYING in defeat.
Luisa: I’m so useless!
Abuela Guzman: WHAT IS GOING ON?!

Dolores: (Blurts out) Mirabel found Uncle Bruno’s vision and she’s in it! And
she’s gonna destroy all the magic and the miracles gonna be gone, the house
will be destroyed and were all doomed (Deep sigh) (Notices everyones faces)
Uhm oops…

On cue, the coatis pull the VISION up onto the table. As Mirabel tries to snatch
it, she accidentally sends it sliding down the table, stopping right in front of
Abuela Alma. Cracks ripple seemingly from Mirabel around the whole room
and everyone’s powers fritz and spasm. The ground cracks under Isabela who
(shocked) shoots a bunch of vines directly into Mariano’s face.

Pepa’s storm cloud opens up, unleashing a torrent of water onto the whole
table. As animals race out, they blow open the windows where we can see the
WHOLE TOWN out front, ready to celebrate.
Townspeople: Congratulations-(they see the chaos) whoa…
the Guzmans leave, (dodging more chaos and animals) with Abuela in tow,
Mirabel follows into the courtyard as well
Abuela: ¡Señora! ¡Por favor!
Mirabel: Abuela listen– there has to be some reasonable explanation!
Isabela stomps past Mirabel
Isabel: (To Mirabel, dramatically) I HATE YOU SO MUCH, YOU NEVER SHOULD
HAVE BEEN BORN!
Luisa races past Mirabel, sobbing.
Luisa: (Cries) I’m such a failure. I can’t do anything!
Agustin: Luisa!
Pepa runs out, her weather going crazy.
Pepa: Mirabel what have you done!
Camillo: Mirabel, look at what you did. W-why would you?
More cracks ripple through the house.
Mirabel: I swear I didn’t do anything! Bruno’s vision…It’s…
As Mirabel says that she notices... a green light moving on the ground... It’s... a
shard of the vision...being carried by a Rat. There are dozens of rats, all of them
are taking the shards from the dining room and racing up to the balcony.
Abuela: The magic is strong as always! Everything is great just as it should be!
(Shuts door and faces Mirabel) MIRABEL!
Lightning flashes and thunder rumbles as... Mirabel pursues the wet rats but as
she turns the corner... they’re gone. Then a noise... and she spots a single rat tail
disappear through an opening under... a painting. Mirabel approaches the
painting... studies it... then slowly pulls it open, revealing a passageway. Mirabel
climbs into the secret passageway between the walls of the house. What is this
place?

A rat SQUEAKS as it scurries past Mirabel’s feet, but as its glowing shard the
glow moves into the air. As Mirabel squints to get a better look, a bolt of
lightning illuminates…Bruno, sinister and evil, who holds the shard.
Mirabel and Bruno stare at each other for an electric second. Another flash, and
he turns and runs. Realizing this may be her only chance to understand Bruno’s
terrible vision, Mirabel races after him!
Mirabel: Oi!
Mirabel races through the narrow corridors, struggling to catch up in the
winding, twisting labyrinth.
(Inside of Pepa’s room while Mirabel has gone through the passage)
Camillo: (Attempts a calming tone) It’s okay Mama, take deep breaths,
everything is fine.
WHAM! Something slams the wall next to them, and when Pepa hears the impact
she panics, zapping Camilo with lightning.
Pepa: Camillo! Are you fine! I’m sorry I didn’t meant to- (A rain cloud forms)
(back to Mirabel)
Mirabel: HEY! STOP!
Mirabel is almost to Bruno, but he jumps a CHASM. As Bruno disappears down a
distant corridor, Mirabel summons her courage and jumps, but the floor below
her gives way and she falls, barely catching herself at the last second…
Mirabel: NO-no–Please help! (Desperately to the house) CASITA! CASITA?! (It
can’t help) HELP ME! HELP ME PLEASE!
Too late, Mirabel loses her grip and falls and -- her hand is grabbed mid-air, by...
BRUNO. His face comes into the light, she sees he’s not at all what she thought...
he’s small, timid... and straining.
Bruno: Hey kiddo, you’re very sweaty
But before Mirabel can respond... the floor underneath Bruno collapses too,
Mirabel grabs onto a loose board and catches Bruno. They are now both dangling
from the pit. As Mirabel looks at her uncle, a rat pops from his cloak -- she
startles and accidentally drops him to his death…
Mirabel: No!
But... there’s a floor right beneath, he’s fine, they just couldn’t see it. Bruno looks
around, surprised.
Bruno: Well, that’s cool.
Tio Bruno climbs up the wall boards as Mirabel helps him up. Bruno looks at
Mirabel...
Bruno: Bye.
Mirabel: Wait? What! No–hold on!
Mirabel hurries after Bruno
Mirabel: Hold on–ouch- why did you take the vision? I mean what did it mean? I
s why you came back to the casa or–
Bruno passes a piece of wood. He knocks on the wood, crosses his fingers, and
holds his breath. He then passes another piece of wood and continues to knock.
Bruno: That vision you saw…no one was supposed to see it–a little salt
He throws salt behind his back
Mirabel: But–(sputters on salt)
Bruno: Sugar. (He tosses sugar on her)
And keeps walking past rows of HANGING ALOE PLANTS, then does a hop-skip,
and jumps over a series of cracks on the ground.
Bruno: Sana sana, colita de rana
They pass an area with TONS of cracks that have been patched up.
Mirabel: All this time, you’ve been fixing the cracks?
Bruno looks up at all of the patched cracks.
Bruno: The cracks, oh god no. I’m way too scared to go near them. Hernando
does all the patching.
Mirabel: Who is Hernando?
Bruno: (Different voice) I’m Hernando and I fear nothing. (Takes off the hood
and switches to his regular voice). He’s actually me, I always used to say my
real gift was acting. (In another voice) The name’s Jorge, I make the spackle.
Mirabel stares at Bruno.
Mirabel: How long have you lived like this? (Realizes) You never left Casita did
you
Bruno: I mean-I left my tower which had like a lot of stairs, and-(shows food)
this place is adjacent to the kitchen. Plus free entertainment.
Bruno’s makeshift “RAT-THEATER” - which is basically a cardboard cut-out that
he gets his rats to poke their faces through by putting food on the other side so
that they unknowingly enact bizarre little plays.
Bruno: So, what do ya like? Sports? Telenovelas?
Mirabel: (Looks around) I still don’t get it.
Bruno: What? The show? I mean it’s his aunt so their love is kind of forbidden
and-
Mirabel: Not that. Why you left but also didn’t
Bruno looks a little uncomfortable about the question.
Bruno: Well…The mountains are pretty tall, so it's hard to leave-and like I said,
free food(picks up something from the table and gives it to the rats)
Mirabel notices a shaft of light…she follows it and discovers the family dining
room on the other side of the wall. She sees that Bruno has created his version of
the family dining table in his little ...om..She realizes how badly he still wants to
be a part of the family.
Bruno: I love my family and I wanted to help, but my gift…it wasn’t very helpful.
So you know I left. No hard feeling though
Mirabel realizes how similar she and Bruno are. She’s emotional because she
always felt alone.
Bruno: You should leave now, because well-actually I don't have a good reason,
but you should.
Mirabel: Tio Bruno, why was I In your vision? What does it mean for me and
Casita? I just want to make the family proud…be useful. If I’m hurting them then
I’ll stop, so please just tell me.
He looks at her, debating revealing his deep secret
Bruno: I-wish I knew too…
That grabs Mirabel’s attention. Bruno takes the shards from his pocket and starts
to assemble them…
Bruno: You remember the night you didn’t get a miracle. That night Abuela was
worried for the family and the magic. So she asked me to look into the future. I
saw the magic in danger and casita breaking…then I saw you, but the vision
changed. Like there was no clear answer and an undecided future. I knew how it
was gonna look though, what everyone would think. I’m Bruno and my visions
are always bad(sighs).
Mirabel: Wait? So you left to protect me…?
Bruno: I don’t know what’ll happen, but I guess it’s all up to you. The fate of the
miracle-the casita lies in your hands.
This is a big moment for Mirabel... a lot to process.
Bruno: But I don’t really know, it’s a mystery. That’s why the whole vision is well I
don’t know. Look, I wish I could help, I wish I saw more. Sorry Kid.
Bruno shuts the door, leaving Mirabel alone in the dark hallway. She thinks about
what he said...
Mirabel: (Nods, then gets an idea) Yeah. (Barges back in) Tio Bruno if you want
to see more, have another vision!
Bruno: No, no, no, no, no. I’m done with visions, for good!
Mirabel: You could…
Bruno: But I won't.
Mirabel: You just expect me to be okay with having the weight of the world on
my shoulders, and not telling me how to do a thing? Another vision would be
perfect.
Bruno: (Sighs) Okay, even if I wanted to I don’t have anywhere to have a vision.
My cave room was destroyed, and I need a lot of space-
Mirabel: I’ll get you one. So when can we start?
Bruno: Really? Where?
Antonio: You can use my room. It has a lot of open space.
They turn around to see the TAPIR, CHIGUIRO, COATIS... and ANTONIO. He
smiles.
Antonio: The rats told me everything.
Mirabel: Our family is in danger, it needs help. Plus you need to leave this place.
Bruno looks at the rats cleaning themselves with his toothbrush... and then
licking the toothbrush.
Bruno: I see your point.
(The rest of the family is having a conversation)
Abuela: (To Agustin) Why didn’t you tell me when you saw the vision! Didn’t you
once think of the family?
Agustin: I was thinking of my daughter! She’s family too!
Abuela: PEPA! CALM DOWN!
Pepa: I’m trying my best!
Felix: At least it’s not a hurricane!
Julietta: Mama, you’ve always been extra hard on Mirabel
Abuela: I cannot allow anything to happen to the Encanto. I will not lose my home
again. I’ll do anything to protect it.
Julietta: But, mama you have to protect Mirabel too, she’s your grandaughter
Arturo enters with a crowd of people
Arturo: Senora people are worried about the magic. If we could simply speak
with you-
Abuela: Mirabel is behind all of this, it's all up to her. If we want answers we
need to find her.
As Abuela leaves, the house shakes. We pan into Antonio’s room.
Antonio: See, this place is perfect
Mirabel: We should hurry (As Bruno prepares a sand circle for his vision)
Bruno: You can’t hurry the future
Bruno makes a circle out of sand using a bucket
Bruno: Besides, what if the vision shows an even worse fate? You’re gonna be
all like Bruno’s bad and his vision killed my goldfish and whatnot.
Mirabel: It's going to be fine. All bad things aren’t your fault, you’ve just got a
bad rep cause you killed someone's goldfish.
Bruno: I-I didn’t I just-
Antonio hands Bruno a stuffed jaguar
Antonio: It helps whenever I’m scared
Antonio smiles at Bruno and nods, like, I believe in you, then heads off. Bruno
looks at the stuffed jaguar, then up to Mirabel, considering. Then, with a weighty
exhale, Bruno reaches into his ruana and takes out a handful of salt then he
throws it behind his back.
Bruno: (Sighs) Everything will be alright, I can do this-
Bruno lights a match, which he uses to ignite piles of wet leaves. As the smoke
begins to spiral around him and Mirabel, Bruno closes his eyes... entering a
trance-like state.
The magic fills the room and somewhere in the house, Bruno’s door starts to
glow. On the way to town, Abuela pauses at the strange occurrence, unsure of
the cause.
Bruno: Hang on, we’re in for a doozy
He squeezes her hands and energy surrounds them. (Out in the courtyard...
Bruno’s door begins to spark back to life.) But we’re back inside as Mirabel gasps
with wonder, as WHOOSH! Mirabel is suddenly transported into... the vision
CHAOS in the house. The family running! (THIS IS THE PART OF THE VISION
THAT BRUNO WITNESSED ORIGINALLY). Then, a SHAPE: MIRABEL... standing
amidst the expanding cracks... Bruno starts to falter.
Bruno: It’s just the same as last time, I should stop-
Mirabel: No! Not yet, we have to be missing something. Just a bit further
Bruno: We’re seeing the same thing, there’s no difference
Just then, Mirabel turns around and sees a speck of gold
Mirabel: Look!Over there!
Confused, Bruno turns, and it illuminates... a BUTTERFLY... flying through chaos.
Bruno can’t believe it.
Bruno: That’s it, follow the butterfly!
As they stand, the BUTTERFLY lands on a REED in a RIVER, Which dissolves as
something begins to glow behind it.
Mirabel: Where is it exactly?
The images flutter, and Bruno struggles to see it
Bruno: Its all jumbled up
The image starts to come into focus, it’s... THE CANDLE BURNING BRIGHTER.
CRACKS DISAPPEARING.
Bruno: The candle-it’s getting brighter! Wait, I think you have to help the candle
Mirabel: How?!
Bruno’s vision moves... showing Mirabel and a GLOWING FIGURE. Who is it? As
Mirabel wills herself to bring the figure into focus... we see the shape of a
WOMAN.
Bruno: Oh my god! I see someone…and you have to fight them?
Mirabel: Huh?! Fight them?!
Bruno squints trying to interpret what he’s seeing.
Bruno: Oh, no, never mind. You have to hug her?
Mirabel: Pick a side, fighting or hugging?
Bruno: You have to embrace her! To make the candle glow brighter, to stop the
cracks, you have to hug her!
Mirabel: Okay, but who do I hug?
Bruno: Give me a sec
Mirabel: Who is it?!
Bruno: Nearly there…got it!
Mirabel: (Steps forward, and she sees Isabella) IT’S ISABELLA?!
A FLASH OF LIGHT, ENDS THE VISION, leaving us with glittering sand... which
falls onto the chiguiro. Bruno looks at the new emerald vision “plate” and smiles.
Bruno: Isabella’s your sister, it's perfect
Mirabel stares at it in disbelief. Bruno realizes she hates his vision. He chucks it
like it’s garbage.
Mirabel: No, that cant be it!
Bruno: (Chuckles) Every time

We start right on Isabela’s door and pull back to find Bruno and Mirabel staring at
it from behind a plant.
Mirabel: Why would me “hugging Isabella” save the casita?
Bruno: Beats me, you wanna save the miracle. Hug your sister.
Mirabel looks at Bruno like he’s stupid. A noise below draws them to Camilo, who
walks across the courtyard. Mirabel and Bruno duck
Camillo: MIRABEL?! MIRABEL?! (Camilo’s powers fritz and he gets... a baby
head.) Please, Mirabel.
BACK TO MIRABEL AND BRUNO: Bruno looks from Camilo to the candle, which
flickers. Mirabel is too busy worrying.
Bruno: You should decide what you wanna do, we’re running out of time
Mirabel: It’s not going to work. Isabella hates me, she’d rather die than hug me.
Besides…I kinda ruined her proposal, oh and-
Bruno: Mirabel
Mirabel: It’s just annoying, but it has to be the perfect Isabella-
Bruno: Mirabel-
Mirabel: And I don’t get what she has against me? Like I’m not the one that has
flowers coming out of me
Bruno: Mirabel! (Catches her attention, startled) Sorry, sorry. You’re missing the
point. You have to save the family, not her. The family needs you, you just can’t
see it. So do what you have to, by yourself after I leave
Mirabel: Wait, wait, wait, you’re not going to come?
Bruno moves a tall potted plant -- hiding him from view as he waddles toward the
portrait leading to his secret passageway.
Bruno: The vision is about you…not me
Mirabel: Or…you’re afraid Abuela is going to see you
Bruno: Yeah, that’s there too, but hey, once you save the miracle, come visit
Mirabel: (Smiles) You’re coming back once I save the miracle
Bruno smiles at Mirabel then knocks on wood, crosses his fingers, holds his
breath, and tips backward into the wall.
After he leaves, Mirabel notices the candle and magic’s glow becoming more and
more erratic. Mirabel looks toward Isabela’s glowing door, encouraging herself.
Mirabel: You got this. Just hug Isabella and save the miracle…
With that, Mirabel heads to Isa’s door.
Mirabel enters ISABELA’S AMAZING FLOWER ROOM. It’s a lush, Colombian
flower garden, tropical and very, very PINK. Isabela is nowhere to be found.
Mirabel looks around... cautiously.
Mirabel: (Attempts a super sweet tone) Hey, Isabella. I know we don’t always
see eye to eye, but…(Hates saying it) I’m gonna be a better sister…so why don’t
we just hug it out?
Mirabel looks up to find... Isabela on a crazy flower bed... which looks more over-
the-top than usual.
Isabella: (menacing and angry) HUG IT OUT? Luisa can’t lift a bag of rice.
Mariano’s nose is like a papaya! Have you lost your mind!?
Mirabel: I know your upset…but a hug makes you feel better…
Isabella: Everything was perfect! Everyone was happy, no one was losing their
miracle! You wanna be a better sister?! Go on…apologize for ruining my life! Go
on…aplogize!
Mirabel: I’m…Sorry…(can’t go on) That your life is perfect!
Isabella: Get out!
With a wave of her hand, Isabela’s vines drag Mirabel toward the door. Worried
she’ll miss this important opportunity, Mirabel tries to grab onto furniture to stop
her momentum.
Mirabel: I’m sorry(vines tug) I wasn’t trying to ruin your ‘perfect’ life. Some of us
have other things to worry about you selfish and entitled princess!
Isabella: (Offended) Selfish! Everything I have ever done is for the family! I’ve
had to be perfect my entire life. All you ever did is mess up everything for me!
Mirabel: (Confused) I didn’t mess anything up, you can still marry that dumb
hunk
Isabella: YOU THINK I WANNA MARRY HIM! I WAS ONLY GOING TO FOR THE
FAMILY-BUT YOU HAD TO MESS THAT UP
A tiny cactus pops up between them. Mirabel oblivious to the cactus, stares at
Isabela seemingly stunned about Mariano.
Mirabel: God…that is one heck of a confession(then stands, deep breath,
extends arms) come on bring it in
But Isabella doesn’t respond, she isn’t looking at Mirabel... she’s looking at the
ground, at... the weird little cactus. Isabela is transfixed. THE HOUSE SHUDDERS.
Mirabel: Isabella?
Isabella: Did I just make that?
Mirabel: I think so…

Song: What else can I do

In the courtyard, Isabela and Mirabel lay in the pile of flowers exhausted.
Isabela: You are such a bad influence
Mirabel: I think you just figured out who you really are
Isabela: Sure, lets say that.
Mirabel grins back and finally
Mirabel and Isabela sit up to find Abula Alma entering the courtyard. The house
is now covered in all of Isabela’s out-of-control plants.
Mirabel: Abuela(excited) the house is saved i-
Abuela: Saved, SAVED do you see the state of this place right now what part of
this looks like it has been saved?
(looks at Isabela and helps her up) look at the state of Isabela our perfect little
flower has turned into, into this thing. (walks over to Luisa who is trying to lift a
Vase struggling) and our most dependable Luisa cannot even carry a vase now
Mirabel stands up
Mirabel: but she's not happy and neither is anyone else in this household we
are all constantly weighted by the needs of our society and especially you
abuela-
Abuela: me,( Chuckles)ME? Child, you are delusional and are responsible for
all destruction that happens around you the state of our household its people
our diminishing miracle this is all because of you and Bruno's miracle
Mirabel starts breaking down house walls crack soon everyone notices panics
and tries to spot the candle and runs for it in the midst of the falling casita
structure but as soon as their gift starts failing them casita pushes them back
now Mirabel is the only one going for it everyone shouts at her telling her to
leave it she grabs it but house collapses candle diminishes casitas last attempt
at saving her is the only thing that kept her safe
Juelietta: Mirabel, Mirabel(holds up her face concerned she moves it side to
side and checks if she got hurt) Are you alright? Alright don't move I'll be right
back
Mirabel sees the suffering and considers it her fault and runs
Julietta: (does not see Mirabel)Mirabel Mirabel where are you (Starts
panicking and tells everyone, the stage is a mess) Please, be here.
Everyone starts searching for her including villagers
After a few minutes of chaos, Grandma finally finds her beside the river
LUISA (O.S.) Mirabel! Mirabel! We find the kids from town looking worried.
INNOCENT CECILIA They haven’t found her yet? Juancho and Alejandra shake
their heads, no. We find, Julieta and Agustín searching for Mirabel, as well as
Félix and Dolores.
AGUSTIN Mirabel?
JULIETA Mirabel?!
Felix: Dolores anything?
Dolores holds her ear out to see if she can hear Mirabel, but no luck.
Dolores: My powers…They’re gone. I should’ve been more grateful-
Antonio: It’s okay, it’s not your fault (He hugs dolores)
EXT. WILDERNESS - SAME TIME Tight on... a PIECE OF FABRIC from Mirabel’s
dress... stuck on a THORN of a plant. As it moves gently with the wind...
footprints lead away into the wilderness. A shadow passes over them. Abuela
found... a small shape, crouched on a ROCK by the water.... Mirabel. Lost. At
rock bottom. She cries, ashamed of herself and what she believes she’s done
to the family and her home.
MIRABEL: (tiny, broken) I’m sorry. I didn’t want to... hurt us... I just wanted to...
to be something I’m not...
As Mirabel starts to cry... Abuela begins to speak... we’ve never heard her
voice like this... she’s broken, exhausted... old. She looks to the water.
ABUELA ALMA: I’ve never been able to... come back here... (Abuela sits by
Mirabel, they look out at the river). This river... is where we were given our
miracle...
MIRABEL: Where Abuelo Pedro... (Mirabel looks at Abuela, trying to
understand where she’s coming from... she looks so lost and frail. Abuela
looks back to the water…)
ABUELA ALMA: I thought we would have a different life... (INTO V.O.) I
thought I would be a different woman...
As our music begins... we are transported back in time...
Young Abuela Alma moves through her village, a HOLIDAY CANDLE FESTIVAL
underway. She’s a different person, young and full of life. She grabs a candle
and hops up on the railing of a bridge to see the festivities. As she does, she
notices... YOUNG ABUELO PEDRO (20), doing the same -- he smiles at her, and
as she smiles back, she almost loses her balance. It’s funny, imperfect - and
she doesn’t take it too seriously. As the festivities continue in the background,
Alma and Pedro sit talking... love beginning to blossom. Young Abuela offers
him a snack from her basket. He looks into her eyes as he eats it. Butterflies
swarm around them

Song: Dos Oruguitas

As Mirabel and Abuela return to the riverbank... something dark and crashes
through the wilderness in front of them, it’s... BRUNO ON A HORSE. Awkward and
ridiculous.
Bruno: She didn’t do this! I gave her a vision! It was me! I was like go! She only
wanted to help. I... don’t care what you think of me, but if you’re too stubborn to,
to --
Abuela embraces him
Abuela: (quiet, remorseful) Brunito…
Bruno: Mama? Are you okay?
Bruno is confused. He looks at Mirabel.
Bruno: I feel like I missed something important.
Mirabel: Come on…
Abuela gives Bruno an affectionate look before taking his hand and walking after
Mirabel. Mirabel climbs up on the horse. She helps Abuela who helps Bruno.
Bruno: What - what’s happening, where are we going?
Mirabel: Home.
They gallop away, back towards the Encanto. The next morning we find...Mirabel
races on the horse. Abuela and Bruno cling to her, a heroic trio returning.
The townspeople watch, awestruck. The kids see her and freak out.
Mirabel skids to a stop on the side of the ruined house. She hurries around to the
front, and Julieta comes running from the other side.
Julieta: Mirabel?
Julieta runs to Mirabel, relieved that her daughter has returned and is okay. She
grasps Mirabel in a hug.
Mirabel (intimate, warm) Mamá...I-
Julieta: Ay mi amor, I was so worried... we couldn’t find you.
Agustin: (racing up, covered in welts) There were bees everywhere.
Mirabel puts her hand on her dad’s welted face.
Agustin: I’ll be okay.
Camillo: Uh... not if we don’t have a house.
They look at Camillo. Félix nudges Camillo with his elbow.
Camillo: What? We don’t have a house, I can’t say we don’t have a house. What
is that? *points to house* Not a house.
Luisa: You can’t exactly say that
Mirabel walks up to the standing arch that used to be the front door of the house.
She starts singing.
Song: All of you
Mirabel looks hopeful at everyone and takes the doorknob. Everyone gives her a
look of approval. She puts it in the door and the magic returns! Everyone is
surprised. The house invites everyone in and they all use their powers. Then they
all take a family photo.
