SCENE 1
EXT. CAPULET HOUSE (garden) - DAY
An open garden, with plants and a terrace, where brothers RAFAEL CAPULET and EMILIO
CAPULET fight. They quarrel with sticks instead of swords, Rafael clearly has the
advantage. Its obvious they have been fighting for a long time because they seem tired and
sweaty.
RAFAEL
(making pauses between hits, defensive movements)
Youre getting slower, little brother.
They separate for a moment, catching their breaths. Rafael looks focused and confident,
while Emilio seems kind of nervous and distracted.
(mocking)
Soon enough youll be fighting like our mother!
Emilio attacks, and Rafael keeps blocking his moves.
EMILIO
(offensive movements, panting)
Thats what you think! Ha!
Emilio makes a move to hit his brother, but Rafael swiftly evades it. Taking advantage of his
vulnerability, he throws him to the ground and points his sword at his throat while Emilio
tries to get up. Realizing hes defeated, he sighs.
RAFAEL
(Winning smile, clearly arrogant)
I leave for 3 years and you dont change your
technique.
When will you learn that you cant beat me?

Rafael helps his brother to his feet, and they both bow their heads to finish the fight. While
Rafael walks away, the camera shows Emilio glaring at his brother, angry. When they both
reach for towels and a glass of water, Rafael looks at his younger brother and notices his
discomfort.
Aw, dont tell me youre resentful for losing? You and
I both know you couldve taken me down
at least twice.
EMILIO
(sarcastic yet indifferent)
Yes, I am well aware of my mistakes, thank you very much.

RAFAEL
(a hand on his brothers shoulder)
Listen to me. You are an incredible swordsman with skills
superior to most men in Italy. One failure should
not discourage your strength, when you have many victories
to honor. Just not as many as my five consecutive wins of
Veronas Sword Championship.
(he turns and leaves the shot to pick up his stuff)
EMILIO
(in a low voice, )
And you keep reminding me of that.

END OF SCENE 1

SCENE 2
Montague House- Dusk or Night
A dinner table set with plates, cups, candles, and napkins. The Lords of the houses sit at one
side of the table while Rafael and Emilio sit opposite them with an empty space between
them. They are waiting for Mariella. There seems to be some tension as they wait for the big
news. Rafael tries to change the mood.
RAFAEL
(Grabs a cup full of wine and tastes it)
Rumors of the Montagues wine collection must be true.
This is truly majestic. You should try some Emilio.
EMILIO
Id prefer to wait for the food.
LADY MONTAGUE
(Nervously checks the time)
It wont be long now.
Mariella is almost here.
We see Mariella descend a flight of stairs. She is wearing clothes that are yet to be
determined, possibly a blue dress. As she nears the table Rafael and Emilio both rise to
greet her. Rafael doing so first.

RAFAEL
(Cocky and flirty)
A man should only bow his head for two reasons

Kings and beautiful ladies.

(He bends bows his head to his the back of her hand)
Good Evening, Mariella.
MARIELLA
(Friendly)
Rafael, you havent changed.
RAFAEL
(Arrogant)
Why would I ever do such a thing?
Rafael moves back to allow Emilio to greet Mariella.
EMILIO
(Suave and gentlemanlike)
My lady, it is a pleasure to see you again.
(They both bow)
You look lovely tonight.
MARIELLA
(She says this the way you would answer back to a compliment and you were blushing)
Thank you Emilio.
The feeling is mutual.
We see them share a smile between them, before they sit down. Rafael has already pulled
her chair out. She sits in the middle with Rafael sitting at her right and Emilio at her left.
Under the table we see Emilio and Mariella grab their hands.
LORD CAPULET
Now that we are all here we can begin
But before they bring the food
We have important news to share with you.
LORD MONTAGUE
After some deliberation
We have decided to join the Capulet and Montague houses
as one.
LORD CAPULET
(Happy and proud)
This union will bring prosperity to both families
and Verona alike.
In order to do this
we have arranged a marriage
between our firstborn children,
Rafael and Mariella.
You shall join hands in holy matrimony
and unite our houses for a better tomorrow.

We close on Emilios and Mariellas hands separating.

RAFAEL
(Particularly happy)
This is a shock.
I dont know how to take
such good news.
(Turning to Mariella)
Isnt this wonderfull?
MARIELLA
(Shocked and a little uncertain of how she should answer,
she is facing Rafael but turns her eyes to Emilio)
Its unbelievable.
We see Emilio confused trying to hide his shock and anger. Rafael nears Mariellas hand on
the table. Mariella pulls away slightly. In the background we can hear the Ladies and Lords
happy with some laughter, and Lord Montague say:
LORD MONTAGUE
(Pleased)
Im so glad you took the news
so eagerly.
But enough of that, lets eat .
The scene cuts to Emilio washing his face in the bathroom and looking at himself in the
mirror. He looks mad. He exits the bathroom to find Mariella waiting outside. They look at
each other and hug. They break apart to talk.
MARIELLA
(worried)
Oh, Emilio.
What are we going to do?

EMILIO
(Trying to be comforting)
I dont know.
All of this is so unexpected.
MARIELLA
(still worried)
We must to do something
I dont want to marry your brother
Its you, love, whom I want to marry someday.
EMILIO

(He is happy to hear confirmation of Mariellas true feelings)

For the time being we should wait,
Until we figure out a solution.
We see Rafael searching for Mariella.
RAFAEL
(Still happy about the news)
There you are
Ive been looking for you everywhere!
Your father wishes to speak with you.
MARIELLA
(She says this in a formal way)
Thank you.
I must take my leave.
She starts to leave but Rafael calls to her.
RAFAEL
Mariella!
Rafael grabs her hands and seems to want to go in for a hug but decides not to because
Mariella seems uncomfortable. He opts for another bow and kisses her hand
RAFAEL
Ill see you soon.
Mariella gives a fake smile not wanting to hurt Rafaels feelings and leaves. Rafael turns to
Emilio.

RAFAEL
(a little worried)
You seem ill.
Is everything alright?
EMILIO
(Faking his well being)
Absolutely perfect.
RAFAEL
Very well.
Its time to go home.

Following Mariella we reach a room maybe the same dinner table or a living room with only
the Montagues there.
MARIELLA
You wanted to see me father?
LORD MONTAGUE
(Proud)
Mari, my beloved.
Thank you.
You did a splendid job.
LADY MONTAGUE
(Proud)
We couldnt be more proud of you.
Thanks to you the family name will continue.
LORD MONTAGUE
This marriage will undoubtedly
pull us out of debt.
Both Montague parents near their daughter and hug her.
(apologetically)
I know we should have told you before
But we just couldnt wait any longer.
Thank you darling, Thank you.
We love you so much.
MARIELLA
(reassuring)
I love you too.
And dont worry
I wont disappoint you.
(Worried).

SCENE 3
THE GARDEN- DAY
Mariella stands in the shot, looking at the garden where she remembers her childhood and
how her relationship to the Capulet siblings developed. She picks up a flower, holds it in her
hand and looks around as her memories appear.

FADE IN (sepia-black and white)

with young Mariella, Rafael and Emilio playing game.
FADE OUT
FADE IN
Rafael looking for Mariella and Emilio in hide and seek, sees the two of them talking.
FADE OUT
FADE IN
Emilio and Mariella holding hands, we hear he says Your half belongs to me and mine
belong to you. For now and till the end of time, they exchange the necklaces and put them
on and then the scene blurs away.
FADE OUT
Black and white turns to color, showing Mariella in the same garden where she drops the
flower and runs away.
END SCENE 3

SCENE 4
INT. CAPULET HOUSE- DAY
Rafael stands next to his mother who talks to him about the decorations as SERVANT 1
shows different napkin options and cutlery. He cant decide which one is better, so he asks
Mariella for her opinion but she seems dismissive of the whole ordeal as she reads a book.
Lady Montague is studying her daughters reaction, and pulls her aside to ask if something is
wrong.
LADY CAPULET
Oh, would you look at this fabric! It will be splendid
for the napkins at the main course. What do you think
my child?
RAFAEL
I think both colors look the same. What about you, Mariella?

MARIELLA
(in a tired, whatever voice, without even raising her eyes)
Whichever is fine, darling.
RAFAEL
(to the servant, pointing at one)
The biodegradable one.

Rafael frowns at his fiances reaction, but picks one of the napkins and the servant leaves.
He then proceeds to analyze the elegant china plates and cups that will be part of the
wedding, before he glances one last time at Mariella with a confused face.
LADY MONTAGUE
(Talking quietly but reprimanding)
What is wrong with you, child? You were completely
dismissive of your betrothed and disrespectful to his
mother. Do you remember what this engagement
means to us?
MARIELLA
Yes, mother, I am well aware that my arranged marriage
will save our family from perfect ruin. That doesnt mean
I have to be happy about it.
LADY MONTAGUE
(Confused)
But, are you unhappy? Do you not like Rafael?
MARIELLA
(a little exasperated)
Yes mother, I enjoy his company and I think
he will make a fine husband. But contempt
does not equal love, and I do wish Id had the chance
to marry a man who I love.

LADY MONTAGUE
(sad)
Oh, my dear. I know this isnt easy, but its
your duty as our only child. We cannot let the
Montague name fall into disgrace.
MARIELLA
I know, mother, I know. I will try to be better,
I promise.
LADY MONTAGUE
(smiling)
Theres my brave daughter.

The scene cuts to Rafael and his mother in the kitchen, where his mother is talking about
desserts but he does not listen.
LADY CAPULET
and the almond truffle could give

someone an allergic reaction.

What do you think, Rafael? Rafael?
RAFAEL
(obviously distracted)
Yes. What?
LADY CAPULET
(frowning)
Rafael, you werent paying attention. Again. Whats
the matter? Is something troubling you?
RAFAEL
Excuse me mother, its just I feel like my bride-to-be
isnt as joyful as she should.
LADY CAPULET
Oh nonsense! Its the nerves that make her seem
on edge. But she will be the happiest woman
alive if she is married to you.
RAFAEL
But what if she isnt, mother? What if this whole
ordeal is forcing her into a decision she didnt want
in the first place?

LADY CAPULET
Then you both will make it work. You have been friends since
you were babies and now you are responsible, adults.
Any problems that arise can be fixed between you and her, just
give the girl some time to adjust.
RAFAEL
Youre right. Im sorry I had my mind elsewhere.
LADY CAPULET
Its alright, my dear. Its alright.
END OF SCENE 4

SCENE 5- The rehearsal dinner

INT. The dining room. Late afternoon.
The room is filled with guests, there is leftover food and plates on the tables. There is an
individual table for Rafael and Mariella, their families are sat near them. Music, laughter, and

talking fills the room. We see close-ups of Emilio looking jealous of Rafael; Rafael looking
pleased, happy, and trying to tend of Mariella; Mariella is trying to look happy but you can
see her discomfort. Rafael decides its time to give his toast and stands up knocking his cup
to call attention. The music stops and the noise fades.
RAFAEL
Dearly beloved
we are gathered here today
for the sole reason
of having a free dinner
two nights in a row,
(Laughter)
But dont fret, we invite you all
out of the kindness in our hearts
and we thank you for joining us here tonight
to celebrate the engagement and soon marriage
between Mariella and me.
(Turns to his parents)
Father, Mother I thank you both
for everything you have given me.
(Turns to the Montagues)
Lord and Lady Montague
I thank you for trusting me
with your only daughter and greatest treasure
I swear to always respect and care for her.
(Turns to Emilio)
Emilio, there is no greater brother and friend
someone could wish for.
(Finally turns to Mariella)
Mariella.
My best friend and the love of my life
For years you were there for me, and I
almost took you for granted
but in the time I was away
I realized how much you mean to me.
My only wish now
is to have the privilege
of being there for you.
I love you now and till the end of time.
(We see Mariella speechless)

Later that night Emilio and Mariella meet to discuss a plan to be together. They meet at the
garden where they spent their childhood years. The scene starts by following Mariella
arriving at the garden looking for Emilio. Emilio reaches her from behind startling her.
MARIELLA
(Gasps)

EMILIO
Dont worry, its me,
They hug.
MARIELLA
(Suffering)
I cant go through with this farce.
I love my family
and I dont want to disappoint them
but I dont want to live a lie!
EMILIO
(Comforting)
Then come with me, Mariella.
Let's run far away, elope in a different city.
We leave Verona, you and me
together to live free from all of this.
No more family obligations.
Just the love between us.

MARIELLA
Emilio,
you cant be serious.
EMILIO
(surprised)
Why not?
MARIELLA
I cant abandon my family.
It wouldnt be right.
EMILIO
(Frustrated)
Staying here and
marrying against your will
isnt right either!
It was your family who
forced you into this situation
They dont care about you
just their family name.
You dont owe them anything.
MARIELLA
(Angry at the words)

Emilio
EMILIO
(Losing his temper)
What?!
MARIELLA
Calm down.
(She waits a second for Emilio to do so)
I love my family
and they love me
I could never betray them this way.
EMILIO
Im sorry.
Ive just been
I shouldnt have lashed out.
MARIELLA
(Hesitant, not even she believes it to be possible)
Maybe its time to give up
and find a way to live with this.
EMILIO
(serious, definitive)
No.
There is still a way.
If my brother calls off the wedding.
Then we can reveal our relationship to the world.
No more hiding, no more secrets.
MARIELLA
(scoffs, defeated)
Rafael would never do that,
he has too much pride in himself.
EMILIO
He would.
If his brother asks him.
MARIELLA
Emilio, the wedding is tomorrow.
We cant stop it now.
EMILIO
It doesnt matter,
my brother might be arrogant
but I am his blood

and he cant ignore that.

if I convince him, then
MARIELLA
(Interrupting him)
Dont!
Its too late.
Just dont do it, please.

There is a long silence. Mariella breaks it.

MARIELLA
You have to promise me
that you wont talk to your brother.
Promise me youll stay quiet
Emilio nods in agreement.
Goodbye Emilio.
I am truly, truly sorry.
Mariella exists the scene. Emilio stands defeated for a moment but then he has a rush of
emotion and says:
EMILIO
Im sorry too
but I cant keep that promise.
END OF SCENE 5

SCENE 6
Brother confrontation- EXT Garden at night
The scene starts with Rafael in his room comparing a red handkerchief against a blue one.
He cant decide which one to use so he throws them to the floor.
RAFAEL
(Analyzing the handkerchiefs he says this aloud)
Which one do you prefer?
(He gets frustrated and throws them to the floor)
From under his door a letter from his brother telling him to meet him slides underneath.
RAFAEL
(Picks up the letter and reads it)

We cut to the garden. Emilio is already waiting for Rafael. He seems unsteady, trying to build
composure to say what he wants. The rustling of leaves indicates the entrance of Rafael to
the frame.
RAFAEL
(Calling out to the only other person there)
Emilio.
Why did you call me all the way here?
EMILIO
Do you remember this place?
RAFAEL
Yes.
Its the garden Mariella, you, and I used to play in
when we were kids.
I cant remember the last time I was here.
Is this why you called me?
EMILIO
No.
I want to ask you a question.
Rafael remains quiet as he awaits the question.
Do you truly love Mariella?
RAFAEL
(Confused as to why he would ask that)
Yes.
Ive loved her for years.
EMILIO
Then it will only make it harder to ask this.
You have to call off the wedding.
RAFAEL
(Shocked and confused)
What? Why?
EMILIO
Mariella doesnt love you.
You are forcing her into a life she doesnt want.
RAFAEL
Maybe not now but
we will make it work
and any problem that arises

well fix together.

EMILIO
It will never work.
She doesnt love you.
RAFAEL
Brother, why are you..
(Gets interrupted)

EMILIO
She loves me.
Rafael is confused. He doesnt seem to understand what his brother just said. As Emilio
explains we see him start to think about his situation this is difficult on him. He just found out
that the love of his life has fallen for his brother. We slowly notice his heartbreak and
subsequent denial.
EMILIO
Weve been together ever since you left Verona.
We were going to reveal our love but the wedding changed our plans.
Brother, I beg you to cancel the marriage.
You have to understand that Mariella and I
are meant to be together.
She is the only one that has been there for me,
she understands me and I her.
Please, stop this farce.
You have the power to help us.
RAFAEL
(in a low voice)
No.
EMILIO
What?
RAFAEL
(in a louder voice)
No.
EMILIO
Rafael, please understand. this wedding
RAFAEL
(interrupting)
NO! I wont do it!

EMILIO
(Starting to get mad)
Rafael, I came here to ask of you a favor but
if you refuse to help me I will find another way.
Dont make this any harder than it has to.

RAFAEL
(Angry)
A favor?!
You are asking me to surrender the love of my life!
EMILIO
(Mad)
She is not the love of your life.
You are nothing but a friend to her.
RAFAEL
I will not lose her to you.
EMILIO
(Angry)
Lose her?
Is that what this is about,
Whether you win or lose?
Is she just a prize to you?
Another way to prove how superior you are?
RAFAEL
No, youre wrong I..
EMILIO
Dont take me by fool.
You love doing this, dont you.
Casting me beneath you
like a worthless object,
inferior to your greatness.
RAFAEL
No.
EMILIO
Those days are over, brother.
If this is a competition then Ive won.
The only move I have to make is reveal the truth
and the marriage will be tainted.
Father would never allow such disgrace into the house.

RAFAEL
You wouldnt do it.
Not if it would cause Mariella pain.
EMILIO
(Threatening)
Are you ready to take that risk?

RAFAEL
I wont have to.
I can take you out of the picture.
Convincing father to send you out of Verona wouldnt be hard.
A few years away are always good for a boy to become a man.
I will make sure there is enough distance between Mariella and you
that by the time you return she wont even remember your name.
Ill show you the true feeling of being overshadowed by me.
After saying this Rafael starts to leave. Emilio is furious at his failure of threatening Rafael.
Emilio loses his composure as he is backed into a corner and decides to do something rash
when his hand touches his dagger. Emilio unsheathes his dagger and rushes towards his
brother with murderous intentions. Rafael turns around just in time to stop his brothers arm
from stabbing him. They are both furious as they struggle to get the upperhand. Emilio
seems to have the upper hand as he is about to push the dagger into his brothers chest but
Rafael turns it around and starts pushing Emilio back and turning the dagger towards Emilio.
Emilio trips over a rock or something maybe more symbolic and they both fall. The dagger is
pushed into Emilios chest by the force. His brother returns to his senses and starts to panic
over a dying Emilio who after a moment stops breathing. Rafael stands at the realization of
what just happened. He is afraid and doesnt know what to do. We see him look at his hands
stained by blood. In the end he puts his hands down and walks backwards into the shadows
before running away
END OF SCENE 6

SCENE 7- The Wedding

Mariella and her father are waiting outside the Church, where their families and friends wait
for the ceremony to begin. Mariella is wearing a white/purple dress and the necklace that
Emilio gave her. She is nervous, looking around for Emilio but his seat is empty.
LORD MONTAGUE
My dear, if you tap your feet any longer
I fear I might go mad.
MARIELLA
(laughs)

Sorry. Can you blame me for being twitchy

on my wedding day?
LORD MONTAGUE
(hugs her)
I guess I cant. Are you ready?

MARIELLA
As Ill ever be. But, have you seen Emilio today?
He is supposed to be up there, sitting
with his family but I cant quite find him.
LORD MONTAGUE
As a matter of fact, I havent seen him all day.
Perhaps he had an errand to run or he might have even
overslept. I always thought that boy was rather
irresponsible compared to
He is interrupted by the beginning of the wedding march. The people in the church stand up,
and Rafael fixes his bowtie one last time. Lord Montague offers his arm to his daughter, she
takes it and then proceeds to walk through the door. As they proceed down the aisle the
camera shows the smiling faces of the people gathered, their families and friends happy.
When Mariella reaches the altar her father hugs her one last time as she stands before
Rafael. Rafael tries to smile at her, but she looks away, obviously searching for Emilio.
Rafael loses his smile when he realizes what she is doing and he looks down.
PRIEST
We are gathered here today to witness the sacred union
between this woman
and this man
before God and their loved ones. Now,
before we commence, is there anyone who objects
to this ceremony? Let them speak now or stay silent
forever.
The ceremony is interrupted by SERVANT 2 bursting into the Church, running through the
altar, clearly agitated. When the Lords of the Houses stand up in concern, the Servant turns
to the Capulets.
SERVANT 2
My lord, your youngest son is dead!
They found him in the park, his own blade
piercing his heart!
The scene shows commotion as the public gasps, cries and whisper/talk amongst
themselves, the Lords and Ladies of both houses discussing and talking to the servant.

Everyone is shocked and Mariella holds a hand to her chest, right above the necklace. She
turns to Rafael and he is looking at the floor guiltily, realization dawns on her.
MARIELLA
(crying)
No!
Mariella faints and her mother helps her, while Rafael walks away from the scene.
END OF SCENE 7

SCENE 8
INT-Room inside the Capulet house where Emilios body lays.
Rafael stands next to his deceased brother. We see him lost in thought as he stares at his
brother. He mutters something to himself. Mariella then enters the room and closes the door
behind her. She is holding two cups of wine.
RAFAEL
(Muttering to himself)
God damn you Emilio.
Why did you unsheath that dagger?
Why did you have to fall?
(If im able to cry good if I dont then its okay)
This is the one fight
I wish I had lost.
Mariella enters the room. Rafael doesnt notice her. He keeps talking to himself, his thoughts
only confirming what Mariella already knew.
Im sorry brother, I never meant
to do this
(his voice breaks)
Mariella clears her throat, and Rafael turns around quickly like he was caught doing
something wrong. He brushes off imaginary dust, trying to act normal.
MARIELLA
Here, I brought you this.
She hands him a cup and he takes one, taking a swig.
RAFAEL
Thank you.
MARIELLA
(her voice serious)

This must be tough for you.

RAFAEL
Isnt it for you?
He was your friend.
MARIELLA
And he was your only brother.
Its never easy to lose someone so close to you.
RAFAEL
Youd know that, wouldnt you.
MARIELLA
Rafael, IRAFAEL
(interrupting her)
Lets stop pretending, Mariella. I know the truth.
I know you and Emilio were in love
and that you planned to end
our marriage to be with him.
Mariella looks away, avoiding his eyes because she knows hes right and she also knows
that he killed his brother. Rafael clears his throat before the next line, from here on he will
slowly deteriorate due to the poison.
Tell me something,
what was it that made you love him?
MARIELLA
He always knew exactly how to read my mind, understand
how I felt.
He was everything you arent.
Ive met no man better than him,
but all that ended the moment you returned.
RAFAEL
(Starts to cough)
Are you saying its my fault?
MARIELLA
The only person that could ever hurt him was his brother.
You were always his poison.
You corrupted the man I fell in love with.
RAFAEL
(Coughing and looking ill)
I did no such thing

MARIELLA
You tore him apart.
You watched him fall into pieces,
tormented by your success
and you did nothing.

RAFAEL
(Coughing, dizzy)
Thats not my fault
I was good to him I was there for him.
MARIELLA
You cared only for yourself, Rafael.
You always have.
RAFAEL
(Really dizzy)
Thats not true
I cared about you
I loved you
I...I..
Rafael collapses to the ground and starts to cough up blood.
MARIELLA
And in the end
you murdered him.
But there will be justice.
Rafael looks at Mariella confused before realizing what is happening and looking towards the
cup.
RAFAEL
What did you?
MARIELLA
Im showing you how your brother felt
every day of his life.
I am making things right.
RAFAEL
(Very ill, he wants to say something but he is too ill to finish)
You dont understand
I didnt murder Emilio.
It was

Mariella kneels down to Rafaels level, and reaches for his dagger.
MARIELLA
Its all finished now.
A plague has fallen upon our houses
but I will cleanse them from it.
I will right the Montague name.
She puts the dagger in Rafaels hands. He is too weak not to comply. Mariella stabs herself
with the dagger still in Rafaels hands.
Goodbye, Capulet. Goodbye.
RAFAEL
