Your loan payments

Your student loan assessment is how much you need to pay towards your loan for the year
ending 31 March 2024. Your assessment is due in two payments.

You must pay at least this much this year. If you pay by the due date you will not be charged
late payment interest (the current yearly rate is 7.30%).

How we work out your loan payments

While you're overseas your loan payments are based on the size of your loan.

On 31 March 2023 your loan balance was $94,537.38. Because your loan balance was over
$60,000, your loan payments are $5,000.

Student loan payments (your assessment) $5,000.00

Plus late payment interest $29.40
Less payments and other credits $0.00
You need to pay $5,029.40

How your loan payments may change

While you’re overseas you make two student loan payments a year. How much you have to pay
is based on the size of your loan balance when you left New Zealand.

At the end of the tax year, if your loan balance has increased, next year’s payments may
change. If your loan balance has decreased, they will not change.

If your loan balance is your first payment your second payment

under $1,000 half your loan balance half your loan balance
$1,000 and up to $15,000 $500 $500
over $15,000 and up to $30,000 $1,000 $1,000
over $30,000 and up to $45,000 $1,500 $1,500
over $45,000 and up to $60,000 $2,000 $2,000
over $60,000 $2,500 $2,500
