About Lebanon

1he republic o Lebanon is a country located in western Asia. It is bordered by the


Mediterranean Sea to the west, by Syria to the east and north, and by Israel to the south. A
small country with a population oI approximately Iour million, Lebanon became an
independent country in 1943.

ulture
Lebanon has a lot o diersity in its culture. Most Lebanese people speak Arabic, Lnglish,
and lrench. As you walk the streets o its capital, Beirut, you will pass domed mosques and
churches, relecting the country's religious and architectural legacies. Lach part o the
countryside has its own local laor, with dierent illages presering dierent culinary,
artistic, religious, or cultural traditions.

Religion
Lebanon's population is estimated to be 4.2 million which comprises o 59. Muslim 34
sunnis 20 shia 5. other ,Shia, Sunni, Isma'ilite, Alawite, or Nusayri and non-Muslims
with similar belies to the Muslim such as Druze,, 39 Christian ,Maronite, Greek
Orthodox, Melkite Catholic, Armenian Orthodox, Syriac Catholic, Armenian Catholic, Syriac
Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Chaldean, Assyrian, Copt, Protestant,, and 1.3 others.

Weather
Lebanon is blessed with a mild Mediterranean climate and our distinct seasons. In coastal
areas, winters are generally cool and rainy whilst summers are hot and humid. In more higher
areas, temperatures usually drop below reezing during the winter with requent, sometimes
heay snow, summers are warm and dry. Although most o Lebanon receies a relatiely
large amount o rainall annually, certain areas in northeastern Lebanon receie little because
o the high peaks o the western mountain ront blocking much o the rain clouds that
originate oer the Mediterranean Sea.

1ourism
Lebanon has become an increasingly popular destination Ior tourism. Its rich history,
historic sites, mild climate, along with other Iactors, have all made Lebanon currently one
oI the most visited countries in the Middle East. Lebanon, even in its post-war state, has
managed to attract around 1,333,000 tourists in 2008, thus placing it as rank 79 out oI
191 participating countries Statistics have shown that Lebanon's tourist attraction rate has
been increasing rapidly and the Ministry oI Tourism predicts that this ongoing trend will
ampliIy in the coming years.
Lebanese cuisine
Lebanese ood has a lot o ruits, egetables, resh ish and seaood. It also includes large
amounts o garlic and olie oil, oten seasoned by lemon juices, olie oil, herbs, garlic and
lemon are typical laors ound in the Lebanese diet. Most oten oods are either grilled,
baked or sauted in olie oil, butter or cream is rarely used other than in a ew desserts.
Vegetables are oten eaten raw or pickled as well as cooked In Lebanon, ery rarely are
drinks sered without being accompanied by ood. Although simple resh ruits are oten
sered towards the end o a Lebanese meal, there is also dessert, such as Baklaa, and coee.
Although Baklaa is the most internationally known dessert, Lebanese sweets hae got a lot
