The Wonder Years S1E1: “Pilot”

1. What do we get to know about the following characters?

 - Kevin Arnold: He is the main character and lives in the suburbs with his family. He is
also Wayne’s brother and Paul’s friend.
 - Wayne Arnold: He is Kevin’s elder brother and he likes to bully him. He often taunts
him about Winnie and fights with him.
 - Paul Pfeiffer: he is Kevin’s best friend, and he is a bit peculiar, so Kevin gets often
embarrassed because of him in high school.
 - Winnie Cooper: she is Kevin’s Neighbor and also his romantic interest, although he
denies it.

2. What makes Kevin’s first day at high school particularly tough?

The difficulty of get used to this new environment and the fear of getting rejected by
others.

3. Was your first day at high school tough too? If so, why? What do you remember about
that day?

Not particularly. I remember I was alone at the hall and then a girl started talking to me.
After that, we went together to our class and we meet our tutor, who was the philosophy
teacher. Moreover, I had a sandwich for lunch and an orange juice.

4. This episode portrays the supposedly typical everyday life of a middle-class American
family in the 70s. What things do you think would be different nowadays? What things
would be similar?

I think the way we interact with others has changed a lot in the past few years. We have
abandoned streets to stay at home with our phones and computers. Another thing that
has changed is the established roles in families, which have become more open and
dynamic, instead of those old values of a house wife and a working husband.

However, some things haven’t changed at all like high schools’ environment, or the
structure of these facilities, the canteen, the rules, etc.
