SOE Operatives: The Secrets of
Their Success
Formed in 1940, the Special Operations Executive was an underground army that waged
a secret war in enemy-occupied Europe and Asia during the Second World War. The men
and women who served demonstrated incredible courage and resourcefulness in their
guerrilla war.
But what were the key qualities, traits and characteristics that made these individuals
such formidable operatives, especially when faced with such difficult challenges and the
real possibility of capture and execution?
In this exciting talk, Carina Evans will offer an insight into the individuality of SOE
operatives, while also looking at underlying factors such as their background, upbringing
and mindset.
THE JUNGLE WAR
In support of both the Kohima Educational Trust and the
Gurkha Welfare Trust, Hannah Watson has written a new
book for young readers, aged between 8 and 14, which
explores the early years of the Burma campaign.
‘The Jungle War’ is a fictionalised account of real events
during the retreat from Burma in 1942 and the subsequent
Chindit expedition back into Burma in 1943.
Britain’s First Victory in Asia
The Battles of Imphal and Kohima marked a turning
point in the fortunes of the Fourteenth Army after a
series of disastrous losses at the hands of the
Japanese. These battles opened the way for the
subsequent re-conquest of Burma. However, they were
not the first Allied victories of the Burma campaign.
Drawing on research for his book ‘Burma ’44’, James
Holland will discuss Britain’s first victory in Asia,
the Battle of the Admin Box, fought in the Burmese
state of Arakan (now Rakhine) in February 1944.
