British boy invents phone-linked doorbell

What happens when the postman tries to deliver a parcel and no-one is at home? The postman has to take
the parcel away and deliver it the next day, or the day after that. This is often both time consuming and
inconvenient, and it costs the postal company a lot of money.

Well, a 13-year-old school boy has thought of an idea which could solve this problem.

Laurence Rook, from Croydon, said that he had had the idea a year before when his mum had been
expecting a parcel delivery. They had tried to deliver the parcel three times, and each time they had left a
note saying they would deliver it again the next day. He thought it would be much easier if the postman could
phone you while he was standing outside your house. At that point, he had the idea of setting a phone
connection inside the doorbell which connects directly to the owner’s mobile phone. This allows the postman
to speak directly to the owner at the time of delivery.

At around the same time, Laurence’s school had a competition for inventions based on the TV show
Dragon’s Den, which allowed him to develop the concept in more detail. However, he didn’t have enough
time to design a prototype. So, he asked a family friend, Paula Ward, to help him improve the design. Paula
is an inventor, and after they had worked out the design and the concept, she contacted some people in the
business who built the prototype.

Laurence has already received orders worth £250,000 from two different companies. His phone-linked
doorbell could be on sale in shops by the end of the year. We asked him what he was going to do with the
money he made from his invention. Very sensibly, he plans to put some away for his university fees and
future expenses for when he’s older. But he also plans to spend some of it right now on games and clothes,
and having some fun!
