You may have read the last chapter and thought to yourself,
“This is great for you, Taren, but how am I supposed to believe
it will work for me?” I know you’ll be able to get faster on the
bike because we see athletes—even top professionals—make
improvements on the bike all the time.
If you ride more, you will get faster; I guarantee it. The hurdle
preventing a lot of triathletes from making progress on the bike
is the belief that “ride more” means hours and hours away from
work and family. Sure, long rides will help you get faster and
stronger but with the right system, you won’t need to put in
hundreds and hundreds of hours over thousands of miles of
riding to see improvements. Instead of careless cycle training,
you’re going to learn how to optimize your bike, your training,
and your body so that with 100 percent certainty, you will get
faster on the bike without getting a divorce or getting fired from
your job because you have to spend so much time training.

WHAT IT TAKES
Before getting into the system of bike optimization that you’re
going to learn, we need to put into perspective how this system
fits into what you’ve heard before about work and optimization.
The buzzwords everyone hears today always fall into one of two
buckets at opposite ends of a spectrum. Those two buckets are
“hacks” and “hustle.”
This isn’t to say there aren’t ways that you can optimize your
training; we’re going to talk a lot about how you can get the most
out of the time you spend training so you don’t have to put in
hundreds of mindless hours. But taking the approach of
performing effective training is very different from hacking your
training.
Don’t stress about feeling like you always need to buy more
and more gear that you can’t afford or perform more and more
training that you can’t fit in. Do what’s comfortable for you!
In this book, we’ll talk about three things that are critical to
starting on the right track with bike triathlon training:
able to select the upgrades you feel are worth your time and
money so that no matter how much you want to invest in
triathlon, you’ll be set up in the best way possible to commit to
the sport.
Forget having to take time away from your family for months
on end or setting up a stationary bike at your desk so you can
get in extra three-hour rides while at work. With just two rides a
week, done with the right structure, you can become VERY fast.
Your body will be strong enough to make sure you don’t get
sore while holding the aero position. Your legs will have the
muscular endurance to pedal strong from the start of the bike to
the end. You’ll be able to ride in the hills and the wind and not
have it suck the energy out of your legs. And you’ll know how
to pace the bike every step of the way, for every distance.
