DEAD MEN’S PATH(REFLECTION)
Assignment #1

The short story of Chinua Achebe’s titled “Dead Men’s Path” was a really artistic kind of
literature. It was all started in Ndume School where was Mr. Obi, the new headmaster devoted
his entire life to the project, as did his wife. He had two goals. A high degree of education was a
must and the school compound had to be transformed into a work of art. I really like the part
where Mr. Obi has dedication to his work or to the school’s beautification, I desire for that
position where I will be able to have an opportunity to change or transform, something into a
wonderful thing. Specially having the character of Mr. Obi as I start my passion to grow in every
step that I take, (the dedication).
The moment where Mr. Obi says “ Our duty is to teach your children to laugh at such
ideas.” The whole statement for me has this so much power, I feel his spirit of teaching and
willingness to do anything for the students and school’s sake. But a little while where the old
man speaks his side, I felt guilty of what Mr. Obi did, he just let it too harsh without thinking
what will be the people of the community thinks of him. If I were given a chance to be there, I
would suggest some alternative ways to keep the peace between the two parties. We all know
that the school needs a big improvement but without hurting each other’s feeling, I would
rather have a meeting between the people at the village and the school staff to have a deep
talk about the problem.
Mr. Obi didn’t think the consequences after of what he did, so that everything went to a
tragedy. Before we decide or let our selves have a decision in life, always think what will
happen in the future if you did that, even if it has a good result or it will be come a tragic
ending. If you have that dream in your life even if you’ll face any kind of hindrances, let that
dream planted in your heart and your success will follow.
