Bender Visual–Motor Gestalt Test is one of the most widely used psychological tests.
Appropriate for ages 3 to 85+ years, the Bender Gestalt II is a reliable way to assess visual–
motor development. It is also a useful introduction to any battery of educational, psychological,
or neuropsychological tests. The Bender Gestalt II provides helpful information in preschool
screening as well as geriatric assessment. And it can offer insight into many conditions,
including ADHD, intellectual disability, giftedness, learning disabilities, autism, and
Alzheimer’s disease.
The Bender Gestalt II consists of a series of stimulus cards, each displaying a unique figure. The
individual is asked to draw each figure as he or she observes it. The stimulus card is not removed
until the drawing is complete.
This edition of the test adds items and extends the range of ability assessed. New recall
procedures to measure visual–motor memory ensure a more comprehensive assessment of
visual–motor skills. And supplemental tests of simple motor and perceptual ability help identify
specific visual–motor deficits. An optional timing component allows the examiner to time each
drawing, and scoring is now quicker and easier.
Conormed with the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales, Fifth Edition, the Bender Gestalt II was
standardized on more than 4,000 individuals ranging in age from 4 to 85+ years. The
composition of the standardization sample corresponds to the 2000 U.S. population.
The Bender Gestalt II is an ideal way to start an extended psychological test battery. With its
simple design and administration, the test is a nonthreatening way to warm up to more
challenging assessments.
CLINICAL USE OF BENDER GESTALT TEST:
Clinical experiences tell us about overlapping of symptoms between some psychological and
some organic disorder. These common grounds has prompted the use of tests in neuropsychology
for deferential diagnosis. Bender-Gestalt test is one of the best known tests in neuropsychology,
which is easily and simply done. Methods & Materials: To carry out this research, the researcher
has contacted with two centers of MRI imaging in Tehran. He has chosen 81 patients as a sample
size. Selected persons as samples, in this group were kept under control from the following
variables; Age, sensory-motor disorders, visual disease, psychoses and mental retardation.
Before talking the patients to MIR imaging, they were given a clinical interview and bender-
Gestalt test. Results: The results indicated that there is a significant difference between Bender-

Test Administration

Description

Gestalt Test is an individually administered pencil and paper test used to make a diagnosis of brain injury.
here are nine geometric figures drawn in black. These figures are presented to the examinee one at a time;
then, the examinee is asked to copy the figure on a blank sheet of paper. Examinees are allowed to erase,
but cannot use any mechanical aids (such as rulers).

Instructions:

amount of time to complete the test is five to ten minutes.  One method requires that the examinee view
each card for five seconds, after which the card is removed. The examinee draws the figure from memory.
 Another variation involves having the examinee draw the figures by following the standard procedure.
The examinee is then given a clean sheet of paper and asked to draw as many figures as he or she can
recall.  Last, the test is given to a group, rather than to an individual (i.e., standard administration).

Administration  Administration of the Bender-Gestalt II consists of two phases:  Copy Phase ○

Examinee is shown stimulus cards with designs and asked to copy each of the designs on a sheet of paper
 Recall Phase ○ Examinee is asked to redraw designs from memory

 Motor and Perception supplemental tests screen for specific motor and perceptual abilities/difficulties.
 Kit consists of Examiner’s manual, 16 stimulus cards, observation form, motor test, and a perception
test http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bender-Gestalt_Test http://www.minddisorders.com/A-Br/Bender-
Gestalt-Test.html

 Materials needed: Two pencils with erasers, 10 sheets of drawing paper, and a stopwatch (not included
in test kit).  Administer test on a table, seated across from the examinee if possible  Supply one pencil
and one sheet of paper (vertically in front of examinee)  Show the stimulus cards to the examinee one at
a time (aligned with the top of drawing paper) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bender-Gestalt_Test
http://www.minddisorders.com/A-Br/Bender-Gestalt-Test.html

 Administer stimulus cards in the correct numeric sequence and do not allow examinee to turn or
manipulate them.  Copy Phase:  Inconspicuously measure how long the examinee takes to complete
the items – record time in minutes and seconds  Document your observations – carefully note the
examinee’s approach to drawing each design  Recall Phase:  Administered immediately following the
copy phase  Examinee is given a new sheet of paper an asked to draw as many of the designs that were
previously shown.  Motor Test:  2 – 4 minutes  Draw a line between the dots in each figure without
touching the borders  Perception Test:  2 – 4 minutes  Circle or point to a design in each row that
best matches the design in the box http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bender-Gestalt_Test
