1000 SERIES PORTABLE SERIAL PRINTER

INSTALLATION/OPERATORS GUIDE

Packaging contents : 1 portable printer. 1 paper roll 1. Operator guide.

The 1000 printers are dispatched from the factory with no charge in the batteries for
safety and storage reasons.
1. Interface (See figure 1). The connector is a 25 way D socket.
The connections are:- Function 25 Way D Socket Input/Output
TX 2 OUT
RX 3 IN
CTS 5 IN
GND 7
DTR 20 OUT
Note : Pin 4 is pulled up to + 1OV via a 1K resistor.

2) Power Supply Internal Ni-Cad batteries. A supply of 9V d.c. at 0.6A is sufficient

to power the printer and recharge the batteries. Maximum off-load terminal
voltage must be limited to 12V which it will take 14 hours to totally charge the
batteries. A power saving feature automatically switches the printer off when it
has not been used for a 1 or 5 minute (programmable) period. This feature can
be turned off if desired (See section 9).

3) Power On Procedure Check the batteries are sufficiently charged or that the
power adaptor is connected correctly. Open the lid and check that paper and
ribbon are present and that there are no foreign objects inside the paper well or
mechanism. Close the lid, ensuring the paper is guided through the paper exit
slot. Switch on the printer by pressing the symbol "1" on the switch panel. The
power-on indicator will light and the mechanism will reset.

4) Paper Loading (See figure 2) . If the paper roll needs replacing open the lid and
remove the old paper using the feed switch to feed out any excess paper left in
the mechanism. Do not pull the paper out of the back of the mechanism. Reel
off a few centimetres from a new paper roll and check that the paper end is
square. Sit the new roll in the paper well with the paper end coming from the
bottom of the roll. Make sure the power is on and offer the paper into the back of
the mechanism while pressing the feed switch. Keep the switch depressed until
enough paper is fed through the mechanism to be inserted through the paper
exit slot in the lid. Feed the paper through the exit slot and close the lid.

5) Ribbon Change (See figure 3). Ensure the power is off and open the lid. The
cassette will clip off one side and can easily be removed. Check the new ribbon
is taut. Clip it into position making sure that the paper still feeds between the
ribbon and cassette body correctly. Wind the knob as shown in figure 3 to take
up any slack in the ribbon. Close the lid.

6) Paper Feed (See figure 4). For a single line paper feed press and release the
feed switch. For continuous line feed keep the switch depressed. The power
indicator turns off when the feed switch is depressed.

7) Default Settings The 1000 printer is supplied with the following :-

Data bits : 8, Parity : None, Baud Rate : 9600, Character Set : UK,
Print Mode : Text, Auto-Off : 5 min, Interface : Serial,
Mechanism : As applicable.

8) Self Test To initiate self test press the power on and feed switch together until
the test starts. This will check all the mechanics and a large proportion of the
software and hardware (except that dealing with the data interface) without the
need for connection to a host. The software issue is printed in double height,
double width text, followed by the character set in normal text and a list of the
current settings of the user selectable options. If the settings are correct for your
host you are ready to connect the printer to your system , otherwise you will
need to reprogram the printer. The self test is repeated until the power is
switched off. Power on again for normal operation.

9) Programme Mode The front of the unit displays a power on indicator and four.
switches which are labelled on the panel from left to right as shown in figure 4.
The programme switch is hidden under logo 'D'

Press the programme and power on switch together to initiate the set-up mode.
The power-on indicator will flash every second until set-up mode is turned off.
The current parameter status will then be printed.

Press and release the feed switch to print each parameter status.

Example : Number of data bits : 8 bit data Pressing the programme switch will
change the status of a parameter Each status table rotates, so 'no parity' follows
on from 'even parity', '300 baud' follows on from ' 19200 baud ' and so on
Examples:-

Serial Baud Rate : 300, 600, 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, 300 , .. .
Serial Parity: No parity, Odd parity, Even parity, No parity .. .

When all the necessary changes to the parameters have been made press the
programme and the feed switch together to update the status of the printer If no
switches are pressed for 15 seconds the set-up mode is terminated without
changing the original parameters.

1 0) Diagnostic Mode If a command is not carried out by the printer it is possible to

reveal the control codes and characters that were sent. To enter diagnostic
mode initiate self-test and keep the feed switch pressed until 'DIAGNOSTIC
MODE' is printed. The power on indicator should flash every two seconds.
Characters OOH to 1FH are translated to characters 40H to 5FH and a control
character is indicated by an underline. Normal characters are not underlined.

Examples:- HORIZONTAL TAB (09H) = CTRL I Printed as 1

CARRIAGE RETURN (ODH) = CTRL M Printed as M

Document No : DS1 016 Issue : A

Diagnostic Mode : - ABC DE F G ... Normal Print
ABClDE NFQGM ... Diagnostic Print Out

In the example the following sequence of characters were sent: Characters

ABC, horizontal tab (1) , characters DE, space, double width (N), character F,
single width (Q) , character G, carriage return (M).

To terminate diagnostic mode switch off. To resume normal operation power on

again.

11 ) Command Description

HORIZONTAL TAB (09H) CTRL I : Tab stops occur at every 8th column. This
command enters spaces into the line up to the next tab stop.

LINE FEED (OAH) CTRL J : Prints current line and feeds one line . If LF, CR is
sent, the CR is ignored to avoid a double feed .

FORM FEED (OBH) CTRL K : Will feed 4 fast line feeds .

VERTICAL TAB (OCH,n) CTRL L,n : Fast feeds the paper by n lines. n is a
single byte hex number in the range 0 < n < 20H . A vertical tab prints the
contents of the line buffer before being executed .

CR (ODH) CTRL M : Prints current line and feeds one line. If CR and LF are
sent the LF is ignored to avoid a double feed. On receipt of the last printable
character (e.g. 24 characters for M180) the printer will automatically print the
data in the buffer. If CR and LF are sent after this condition they will be ignored.

DOUBLE WIDTH (OEH) CTRL N : Turns double width printing on. If the last
character in the line buffer is double width and there is only room for a single
width character, it will be printed in single width . Double width is terminated by
the single width command or completion of the current line.

SINGLE WIDTH (OFH) CTRL 0 : Reverts to single width printing . Single and
double width can be combined anywhere on a line.

RESET (11 H) CTRL Q : Causes printer status to reset to single width , normal
height, no underline. The buffer remains unaltered to avoid any data loss.

UNDERLINE (15H) CTRL U : Characters sent after this command , excluding

tabs, will be underlined . Underlining is terminated by the U/L release command
or on completion of the current line.

U/L RELEASE (18H) CTRL X: Terminates underlining .

DOUBLE HEIGHT (1AH) CTRL Z : Prints in double height for one line only.
Double height and single height cannot be combined on the same line.

Document No : DS1 016 Issue: A

GRAPHICS (1 BH,n) CTRL [,n : Enters into bit image printing. The number of
graphics bytes sent depends on the mechanism (e.g. 24 for M180, 32 for
M163). For each graphics byte sent, 6 bits out of the 8 bits build the graphics
string (LSB as the right most dot) 'n' is the number of times the string is
repeated for a repetitive pattern and is limited to a maximum of 255 lines (See
examples). The print buffer is printed first if it is not empty.

Examples: 1) To repeat a string of data bytes d1 .. d24 over two

rows for an M180 mechanism send : 1BH, 02H, d1 .. d24

2} For a non-repeated string send : 1BH, 01 H, d1 ..d24

12) Accessories Paper and ribbons can be obtained from Datac.

Paper roll : Datac order no- OP58L. Ribbon : Datac order no- IRC160PU.
