1. _____ The magnificent tiger, a symbol of power and beauty, is perhaps the most celebrated Indian wild animal. Tigers
have always played an important role in Indian culture, mythology and legends.
2. _____ In the 1700s, tigers were surprisingly common in India; they moved about freely in the forests, around the
outskirts of towns, and were even spotted in the city of Mumbai itself. Unfortunately, today the tiger is an endangered
species. It is estimated that there are only about 2,000 wild tigers left in the South Asian subcontinent.
3. _____ One reason for the reduction in the number of tigers is hunting. It is hard to believe that people could kill tigers
for sport. However, tigers in India were hunted for centuries. During the Moghul Empire (1526 - 1857), tiger hunting
was the sport of emperors and the aristocracy. Hunting trips could last for months with thousands of animals, including
tigers, being killed. The British in India continued the tradition of tiger hunting. Hunting became a fashionable sport
for people from all levels of British society, and with their superior rifles they killed huge numbers of tigers.
4. _____ Jim Corbett was born in Nainital, India, in 1875. As a youngster, he was fascinated by the forests and wildlife
of India, and he learnt to hunt when he was still a young boy. As an adult, he became well-known for his skill as a
hunter, and he was frequently asked to lead hunting parties of government officials and other “important” people.
5. _____ On one of these hunting trips, Corbett suddenly felt horrified by the pointless killing of so many animals and
decided that he would never again kill a wild animal without good reason. From then on, Corbett hunted only tigers
that had killed people or their cattle. He came to the conclusion that tigers only become man-eaters if they can no
longer hunt the animals they usually eat. This might happen if they are old, sick or injured. Corbett became an
active defender of the tiger and its natural habitat.

GRADE 10
Task 1. You are going to read an article about a woman who is a marathon swimmer. Five sentences have been removed
from the article. Choose from the sentences A–E the one which fits each gap (1–5).
A. My mother spent a lot of weekends taking Mike and me to competitions in different towns and cities.
B. There, the course was set in the rowing basin.
C. I was three years old when I learnt to swim at our local pool.
D. Swimmers have even been known to be joined by whales!
E. I, on the other hand, am much less interested in team sports.
For as long as I can remember, I have been swimming. (1) _____ My brother, Mike, who was then nine, trained five days
a week with the local swimming team, so I soon got used to the idea that competitive swimming would be part of my life
too.
Mike was excellent at the sprints, the 50-metre and 100-metre races. Joining the world of competitive swimming, I began
to realise that, while I didn’t have the edge for such bursts of speed, I had plenty of strength and stamina for the 800-metre
and 1,500-metre events. (2) _____ When we were scheduled for different competitions on the same day, my father took
one of us to the other venue.
Mike managed to get a gold in the national championships, but then he gave up racing for water polo, a move that my
father really seemed to approve of. Since then he has obtained a place on the national polo team and taken part in quite a
few international tournaments.
(3)_____ I suppose I have simply become accustomed to working on my own, and having to rely on what I can achieve
for myself. I was actually making a name for myself in the 1,500-metre freestyle races, where it was becoming rare for me
not to finish in one of the first three places. Then one day Daisy, who is my e-pal from Australia, told me that she had
become hooked on marathon swimming.
Marathon swimming usually takes place in the sea or in large lakes. One of the most popular races is the 10-km race, but
some other distances are 1 mile, 5 km and 10 miles. Marathon swimming has been popular among endurance athletes
since the early 1990s, and the 10-km race became an Olympic event at the Beijing Games in 2008. (4) _____ Participants
raced one kilometre down one side of the basin, round a marker buoy and a kilometre up the other side, then round the
same course another four times.
Daisy warned me that the world of marathon swimming was very different from the swimming that I knew. One of the
most obvious differences is the temperature of the sea or a lake compared to a heated pool. Other notable difficulties
include waves and currents, seaweed, floating rubbish (imagine swimming along and bumping into a dead dog), fumes
from escort boats, jellyfish and other marine life. (5) _____
Task 1. Read the article below about a risky business. Choose the best sentence to fill each of the gaps. For each gap 1–5,
mark one letter (A–E). (20 points)
A. Their objective is to advise companies of the steps they should take in order to maintain business continuity in the
event of disaster.
B. Maybe safety procedures have got a little out-of-date; it is your employees who can tell you which working practices
are dangerous or inadequately supervised
C. Computer failure, client indecision and even mistakes by staff can quickly send a company into crisis.
D. The third area to look at is what to do if your office did burn down and all your records were lost.
E. The advice they offer can be broken down into three areas.
Risky Business
As everyone in business knows, working life can be difficult. At times, it seems impossible to reach a position where
everything is running smoothly. (1) _____ Many disasters are completely unforeseen, and it is becoming increasingly
important for managers to learn how to live with the unexpected.
After several major disasters in the City of London, a group of managers have got together to form an organization, called
Survive. (2) _____ So far they have worked with 600 companies in the UK and they are rapidly branching out to locations
around the world. Survive Singapore, which offers its services to companies in the Pacific Rim, is the latest branch of the
organisation to be established. (3) _____
Whatever the size of your company is, the basic lessons are the same. Firstly, if you listen to employees and customers,
then you are more likely to discover the risks you may be running which you hadn’t thought of. (4) _____
Secondly, many companies don’t have adequate insurance. In fact, many small companies have very little insurance at all
and only discover that they are underinsured when it is too late. A fire may break out in the office and bring damage to
not only the office furniture but also invaluable customer records and legal documents.
(5) _____ What you need is a business continuity plan. Professional assistance in drawing up a plan can be provided by
Survive, who will give you access to publications, conferences, databases and workshops where you can discuss problems
with people in similar situations to yours.
