INTERNATIONAL CAPACITORS S.A. CAPACITOR BANKS WITH AUTOMATIC CONTROLLER INSTRUCTION MANUAL BANK No. COMMISSIONING AND OPERATION MANUAL FOR AUTOMATIC CAPACITOR BANKS USED FOR POWER FACTOR IMPROVEMENT 4, DESCRIPTION OF THE EQUIPMENT AND OPERATION PRINCIPLE ‘The FILMETAL self-adjusting banks are capacitor banks used for automatic Power Factor compensation to a user-set vaiue in Low Voltage installations, Banks are delivered fully assembled and have been tested in our works. They are composed by @ reactive Power controller and a group of capacitors having their respective fuses and contactors mounted in a sheet steel cabinet For commissioning and use, it is only necessary to supply them the operating signal by using a current transformer appropriate for the power of the installed receivers, and to connect them to the mains and to the ground by means of supply and protection cables following always the enclosed instructions and wiring diagrams. By means of the voltage and current readings, the controller detects the reactive energy consumption land the controller switches on or switches off the capacitors depending on the needs at any time, until the desired Power Factor is achieved. 2, INSTALLATION ‘You can found the wiring diagram for the standard type of bank at the end of this manuel. To use the bank, itis only necessary to install a current transformer appropriate for the total power of the installation and to connect it to the mains and to the earth terminal using supply and protection cables of enough cross section. ‘The capacitors shall be protected against possible leakage by earth leakage relay with adjustable delay time and sensitivity. Location Banks are for indoor installation and in well ventilated places, away from heat sources. Preparation = Check that the rated voltage of the bank is the same as that of the mains to which is going to be connected * Open the door of the control cabinet * Switch off the circuit breaker of the control circuit Connection of the protection conductor = Connect protection conductor to the ground terminal Connection of power circi = Connect the three power terminals (L1, L2 and L3) using a cable of appropriate section for the total power of the bank. The rating plate of the bank gives the total current of the equipment. = For capacitor banks with MCE controller, the bank terminal L1 should be fed from the same phase on which the current transformer is installed or is going to be installed (see next section and the wiring diagram). ‘wwnwlifasa.com Page 1 of 6 ‘manual BAT_03i doo Wiring of control circuit "The current transformer must be installed in a point of the line supplying all the current drawn by the installation, including the capacitors. SEE WIRING DIAGRAM. + For capacitor banks with MCE controller, the current transformer must be installed on the phase supplying the bank terminal L1 + The current transformer must be chosen according to the maximum current of the instalation and should have a secondary ../5 A +The secondary line of the current transformer should have the following cross sections: distances up to 3m: 41.6 mmé; from § to 10 m: 2.5 mm’; from 10 to 15m: 4 mm*. For distances higher than 18 m use impedance adapter transformers with a ratio 5/0.1.A * Connect the secondary winding of the current transformer to the terminals marked S1-S2 (k-) + Connect the neutral to the terminal marked N. 3. SETTINGS AND OPERATION Settings of the controller for capacitor banks with MCE controller ‘Switch on the circuit breaker of the control circuit, To adjust the different parameters enter in the SEP- UP mode ofthe controller by pressing the Key /@ (see manual ofthe controle, * Set the desired cos + sby using the cos + « control of the controller * Set the C/K value by using the setup of the controller. This value must be the same as the current of the first capacitor step divided by the constant of the current transformer 722A Transformer: 1000/5 Example: First step: 0 kvar 400 V k 72.24 200 1000/5 = 200 CIK= 0.36 If instead of this we would have a transformer with a ratio 500/5: sous=100 © c/K= 224 100 nm REMARKS: Table included at the end can be used to avoid having to make calculations Settings of the controller for capacitor banks with MCX controller ‘Switch on the circuit breaker of the control circuit and press the two central keys of the MCX Controller. You will enter in the SEP-UP mode of the controller and be able to adjust the different parameters of the controller (see manual of the controller) + Set the current of the current transformer (see the manual of the controller) Set the current ofthe first capacitor (see the manual of the controller) Set the desired cos + (see the manual of the controller) In case of a wrong connection of the current transformer, set the connection phase depending on the ‘connection of the current transformer (see the manual of the controller), Commissioning * Once checked that instalation ofthe bank is correct, it will be put into service bearing in mind that the bank will only operate if, at the same time, reactive power is being consumed in the rest ofthe facity + Check manual operation by switching off some capacitors and pressing the disconnection button When you release it, the controler will switch on the capacitors again manual BAT_O3i.doe ‘wonwlifasa.com Page 2 of 6 If the bank switches on and off the capacitors without load fluctuations, check the wiring and settings of the controller. Note: At times of low load it is not desirable to connect the whole bank manually, since under certain circumstances resonance phenomena with the supply transformer could occur. Voltage Reliable operation of the bank requires that the service voltage does not exceed the rated voltage, It should be kept in mind that operation under overload conditions shortens considerably capacitor lite. Current, Current drawn by the capacitor bank can exceed the rated current, due to the presence of harmonics in the mains, or due also to a voltage above the rated voltage. Both circumstances are damaging for the capacitors. In capacitor banks with MCX controller there is an overcurrent alarm that acts in case of an input ‘current in the controller higher than 5.8 A. This alarm advises of overcurrent in the installation but not inthe capacitors, for that reason the current of the capacitors have to be periodically checked It should be checked that the rms current drawn by each capacitor is the rated one and never higher than 1.3 times the rated current, In order to avoid errors in the measurement, only “true rms" meters should be used to measure the current. It excessive currents are detected, disconnect the bank and consult INTERNATIONAL CAPACITORS Technical Assistance Service in order to find the best solution to the problem. 4, COMMENTS FOR TROUBLE SHOOTING FOR CAPACITOR BANKS WITH MCE CONTROLLER Controller does not work. MAINTENANCE Banks require only a very limited maintenance, yet are very convenient for reliable operation. The fol- lowing operations are recommended ‘manual BAT_03idoc ‘www iifasa.com Page 4 of 6 Monthly = Check capacitors visually + Examine protection fuses "Check temperature + Check service voltage (specially at times of low load) Annually ‘Keep clean capacitor terminals and insulators + Check that terminal connections are tight = Check the state of the contactor contacts 7. SAFETY ATTENTION: Before performing any maintenance operation or handling any part of the bank, remove all the power and control fuses and check that capacitors are discharged Even when the bank is disconnected from the mains, capacitors may still be charged. Therefore, after removing the fuses, wait for three minutes and then short circuit them and earth the terminals or outlet cables of each capacitor. 8.
