416 Weatherby Magnum

.416 Weatherby Magnum

The .416 Weatherby Magnum
cartridge was introduced to the
Weatherby line in 1989 to fill the
demand created by hunters
looking for a rifle that could be
used on dangerous game and that
fired a heavier bullet than the
.375 H&H but would be more
versatile and more flat-shooting
than the .458 Winchester.

Due to the large case capacity, the handloader can tailor his loads to
suit most African hunting conditions. The 350-grain X-Bullet is an
excellent choice for those who want to hunt buffalo and plains game
with the same rifle — I have used the 400-grain Solids on elephant and
have only recovered one bullet from a frontal brain shot, as side brain
shots normally pass completely through the skull. When hunting the
smaller antelope, the Solid does very little damage to the capes.

People are often surprised by the level of accuracy that can be achieved
with the .416. Groups of one inch or less are possible and very often will
group in the same place with various bullet weights, which is useful, as
you can carry both “softs” and Solids and not have to worry about the
zero of your rifle.
