TABLES
by
K. W. P. MARAR, I.C.S.,
Superintendent of Census Operation&, Assam
The census enumeration was carried out in full according to plan but the Government of India decided
to restrict the tabulation for British India. Consequently the tables in this volume cover less than half the
contemplated range and offer in effect only the distribution of the population by community by province
or state, district. tehsil and town.
2. The slips in which the :remaining unsorted information is to be found are stored in each province
against a possible reopening of in happier circumstances. ·

' 1. This table shows the area, the number of towns and villages and of occupied houses, and the urban
und rural population for the districts and states in Assam. ,
, 2. The' areas in column 2 are the latest determinations of the Survey of India. In the Sadiyn.
Frontier tract and Balipara Frontier tract however the areas locally determined have been adopted, as the
Survey of India figures relate to the whole of the tract but not to the a,dministered and ceusused area.
The total mapped area of these tracts is 20,034 and 12,043 sq miles respectively. Changes from the 1931
area are due to boundary revisions, resurvey or revised calculations. ·
The areas given in Pro_vincial Table I differ from those given here. The Survey of India do not take
out figures for units smaller than the districts. In Provincial Table I, therefore, areas locally available
were adopted. ·
3. "House" is defined ,as the buildings, one or many, inhabited by one family.
· 4. " Towns " are places of usually not less than ,5,000 inhabitants possessing definite urban oha.rao•
teristics. Some places with less than 5,000' inhabitants have also been treated as towns. The urban :
rural ratio calculated on the population living in towns of 5,000 and over is 1 : 28, that is, for every person
living in town there are 28 persons living in villages.

The _community figures· in the Imperial and Subsidiary tables may appear at first si ht !' lc.xin .
Hence thl8 explanatory note. g p rp g
. The essential point. is that the shows the community origin not the religious attribution. Had
tune and finances pe;'-"ffiltted other would been gi!'e!l to link up fully with 1931 but in this
-truncated _cellSus this was poss1ble.. Commumty and rehgwn may seem to many as onP and tho

li . d t I b h d. . I um y nne
re g:ton nee. no a ways e t. an m the _they have all been rlassified on the basiR
()f and not of religwn. Thus a returrung hiniBelf as a Hindu, Christ.ian, Muslim or
at the last cellSus have U?der any of those headings of religion arcording to
. the. fruth he professed or attnbuted to h1!fl, but th1s has been classified as a Khnsi. This is tho
. mam reason for great fall m the proport1?n, m the population, of Christians and to
a less of Hindus Buddhists. At the same tliDe there 18 more than a correspondin(Y increase in
the proportion of the tr1bal people. . 0
All'the communities ment'oned ili the Gwernmcnt of Inc:h Act as tribes in Assam have been treatl't!
·as such aJ?-d in addition _some. tribes, not indigenous to Assam, but treated as tribal communities in their
own provmces. The chief tnbes under the latter category are 1\lundas, Oraons, Gonds, Konds nne!
Santhals. There are some other minor tribes as well but to clasdfy them would have been difficult and
to the eJ?-umerator.. These tribes, to have been grouped together as tea
garden tr1bes as therr presence m Assam 18 largely due tci that mdustry. The only other community from
outside Assam which has been treated as a tribe is tl:.e Chakmas ; thPir number is small and they are found
()nly in the Lushai Hills where they have·migrated from their original home, the Chitta<>ong Hill tract in
. Bengal. The of theijl trib!ll or foreign to Assam, "have been shown
· together under " Trrbes " m the f'mperial, Provmcial and SubSldiary tables. ·
·Subsidiary XIII (i) and (ii) clearly show the result of the change from a religion to a community
basis of classification. In numbers as well as in proportion in the general popu1ation the Hindu figure
shows a decrease both in the Brahmaputra and Surma Valleys. In the Brahmaputra Valley tribal people
lUre Kacharis, Miris, Raves, Lalungs were.in the past mostly classified on the religion basiR as Hindus; in
. aTI.dition there are large numbers of tea garden tribes there who were similarly classified. With their grouping
together now by origin the figure for Hindus show an apparent decline. In the Surma Valley
tribal people are few in number but there are many belonging to the tea garden tribes ; this has affected
the· Hindu fig:ttre there, but to a much less extent ·than in the Assam Valley. In the Hills, even in the
past cellSuses there were few tribal people returned as Hindus except in North Cachar Hills and that is why
the Hindu proportion has not been affected to a very appreciable extent in the Hill areas. The Christian
:figure shows much larger decrease than the Hindu figures; t4is is because the number of the former
is very much smaller than the latter and it is among.the tribal communities partrcularly that Christianity
has been able to count many of its followers in Assam. The large decrease in the Brahmaputra Valley is
due to the classification of many ChristiallS among the Kacharis, Garos etc. The decrease is greatest
in the Hills as apart from Animism was the main religi?n these Hill tribes at
the previous cellSuses; the decrease should m fact have __been 1t not. been a wrong
of over 25,000 people, most probably tribal, as Indian m Mampur. for ChristtallS
m Surma Valley do not show any decrease as there few tribal people there. m tea gardens and
fewer still of Christians among them. The decrease m the nm:nber of Buddhists 1s also due t<> the 1
reason. Khamptis and Singphos who were classified as Buddhists before now shown sgamst
their tribe. The figure for come down 974 to 1.8111 Lushat Hills; the are
mostly Buddhists and their classification now as a 1s responsible for apparent decrease m
number of Buddhists in Lushai Hills. The decrease m Darrang and Kamrup )8 due to the fewer Bhutms
who have come down this time. than in 1931.
_ If the· figures be examined in the light of what is stated above. they be to disclos: no
".ala?Jling" tendencies. All the communities h:>ve shown mcreascs m valJlng degree and m no
have the pre-existing communal proportwllS disturbed to any appreCiable extent except by
( 21 )
22
There is no question of removal 'or Hindus or of Christians. A separate note on Christians follows and
Hindus are present in the same proportions as before; m the absence of caste or religion sorting the 1931
practice would have meant that no record of the number of persons of tribal origin, .which is so important a
matter in Assam and represents one of the reasons for the extensive reserved areas in that province, would
have been forthcoming. ·

. Christians are ·most numerous among the triboJ people of the HillS .where there is nothing to suppose that the spread of
Christianity haa not ·kept the same pace as in the previotiB decade.. It is however reported from Lushni Hills that there has
been a tendency in the opposite direction also, Christians reverting to their old beliefs and sacrifices, this has been indicated
-in the house-lists, but has not been examined to ascertnin'its extent. In Man.ipnrthe Christians recorded are actna!ly tribal
(Kukis and Nagas) have been shown as non-triboJ Christians. In Naga Hills Christianity has spread m.ost among the A.os and
Semas. ·
·· Outside the Christianity bAs spread largely among tribal people and ex-garden labour settlers. : There is little
missionary activity in the tea gardens themselves, the Christians enumerated there having come as such from their home diB·
tricts. In the case of ex-garden labourers it is difficult to ascertain whether they were origins!ly tribal people or not, for tbey
·assume the name" A. B. Christian". For this reason tribal Christians are very few in the Surrtm valley where the Christians
.are mainly among garden and labour. In Nowgong and Sibsagar districts also Christians am,ong ex-garden labour·
era seem to have returned themselves as such whether they were triboJ or not. ,In these two districts. tribal Christians now
"shown are mostly Mikirs. Most 'of the tribal Christians in Go8Ipai-a, Darrang and Lakhimpur are among tea-garden tribes
.and to ·a less extent among Kacharis.
