SERMON SERIES: THE SYMBOLS SERIES

LESSON 4: THE PALM: THE SYMBOL OF WORSHIP
SCRIPTURE: MATTHEW 21:7-9
“They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit
on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the
trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that
followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the
Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

PALM IN THE BIBLE

a) Palms were often depicted on coins and important buildings. Solomon had palm
branches carved into the walls and doors of the temple -
V

Around all the walls of the house he carved engraved figures of cherubim
and palm trees and open flowers, in the inner and outer rooms.
1 Kings 6:29

b) At the end of the Bible, people from every nation raise palm branches to honor Jesus

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number,
v

from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before
the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in
their hands,
Revelation 7:9

b) Palms were stately trees. Deborah held court under the palm trees, between Ramah
and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went up to her to have
V
their disputes decided -.

She used to sit under the palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the
hill country of Ephraim, and the people of Israel came up to her for judgment.
Judges 4:5
c) Branches of the palm tree were carried at the Feast of Tabernacles -.

And you shall take on the first day the fruit of splendid trees, branches of
v

palm trees and boughs of leafy trees and willows of the brook, and you shall
rejoice before the LORD your God seven days.
Leviticus 23:40
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PALM

1. Used to Honor a king -

Psalm 24:10, Who is he, this King of glory? The Lord Almighty, He is the King of
Glory!

2. Used to Worship the King of Kings -

Hebrews 4:14-16, “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended
into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do
not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have
one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are, yet he did not sin. Let us then
approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find
grace to help us in our time of need.

CONCLUSION
vSo then, my friends, because of God's great mercy to us I appeal to you:
Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to his service and pleasing to
him. This is the true worship that you should offer.
