Sealing effect is achieved through prelstressing of the sealing lip, in that the internal diameter ofthe sealing ip i chosen tobe slightly smaller than the shaft diameter. The draw spring provides for constant pressure maintains radial pressure on the shaft thus the sealing edge is fattened to a certain width, A thin Mud films builds up under the flattened are, obtained. Is thickness (Nim) should be 1 to 3 um to avoid leakage. The lubricating fm works ‘as an interface between eht external air and the fui, A fisure in ths flm of lubricant leads to leakage. Metallic Housing Metal inserts or the housing are used to impart stability and strength to the seal. They are usually made from cold rolled steel as per DIN 1624, To avoid rusting and chemical attack, stainless steel can be used, CChromiumn-Nicke Als! 34 (DIN 1.4301 - V2A) CChromium-Nicke-Molybdn Alsi 316 Tl (DIN 1.4401 - va) 2.4. Draw Spring This serves to maintain the radial force that is exercising by the cealing lip onthe shaft surface. tis usually ‘made from harmonic spring steel wire C72 or stainless ChromiumNicke steel wire ASI 302 (DIN 1.4300) For special purpose application, stainless steel springs in AISI 316 Tl (DIN 1.401 -V4A) are also supplied ‘All our standard shaft seals produced from FPM (Viton) material are provided with stainless ste! springs 2 per AISI 302 2.5. Elastomeric Sealants 2.5.1 Nitrile Rubber NBR (HME-material-no. 100) This elastomer is a copolymer af butadiene and acrylonitrile and is used in conventional applications. Mounting and Operating 3.1. Shaft Shaft surface finish is extremely important for effective sealing and longer service lif. Basically, surface hhachess of the (running) face must increase with increasing peripheral velocity of shaft. ‘As per DIN 3760 the requisite minimal hardness should be 45 HRC. Thi hardness shauld be 55 HRC at 41mis and 60 HRC at 10 mvs, Lubrication is alco very important. Tiss discussed further part 3.3 ofthis catalogue. As specified by DIN 3760, curacefinich must be friction and cause higher temperatures, Ertors in workmanship and fabrication, scrathes on shaft must be avoided. Even small defects may contbute to increase in lubricant fl thickness, causing leakage tis a important 1 avoid parallel chamfering his con cause pump effect and leakage. 29 ROTATION SEALS FNE HW 400 To HW 500 Hardened stell is most commonly use for shafts, Process tolerance is h11 in accordance with ISO STANDARD UNL-6388-68 (see tale), Shaft diameter Tolerance Shaft diameter | Tolerance fom (mm) _ to (mm) hit from (mm) _ to (om) hit 6 10 0,000 a 120 0,000 0,090 0.220 0 18 0,000 20 «180 0.000 =0.110 0.250 8 Ey 0,000 10 250 0.000) =0.130 0290 30 50 0,000 IS 0,000 =0,160 0.320 30 0 0,000 35 400 0.000 0,190 0.360 The most convencent operational conditions are thos, when the shaftis perfectly centered and concentric with respect to the axis of the radial shaft seal, while turning. Naturally, this dows not always occur and some radial run-out is inevitable. Actually the sealing lip does not move directly on the sealing surface but it moves on aso called lubricating film. (see pa. 2.2) Film thickness usually is 1-3 pm thought tis influenced by various factors ‘suchas ol viscocty, surface fnish of shaft and pre-stressing of sea. The first few hours of operation (run in operation) are important fram the view point of lubricant film build up and aso the fattening ofthe sealing edge that accu, Certain amount of leakage is posible during this period of time ‘An adequate lubicatn lm stiongly reduces the friction between sealing lip and shaft and alzo acts as coolant against the resulting heat. The lower this temperature, the longer the life ofthe seal and its endurance. f the liquid possesses merely a low lubricity (lke water and aqueous solutions) shaft sealing system with dust lp (AS, BS, of CS} needs tobe used. In this case take care that the space between the two lps is filled with lubricating greae, Fictional hea atthe sealing lip Heating ee 8 a Shaft diameters (eam) Fictional heat also depends on peripheral velocity of shaft. The higher the actual service temperature, the faster the ageing proces ofthe elastomer which aso influencees the function ofthe sealing ip and shaft surface Frictional heat depends on peripheral velocity, prestressing onthe sealing lip surface finish of shat, lubricant medium etc. ‘The graph below shows allowable values with reference to various materials (Depressurised operation, mineral oil ‘with good lubricity and good thermal dissipation.) ea somo _is9c0__sonmn sneo ape rouo enna s000__ 4590 _4300 Petioheal Velocity ——p Sones BD 7D BAD TREE TD A9N 10 TED DTD 160 IHD PEO ford Shaftiameter (mm) > 33 HW 400 To HW 500 ROTATION SEALS FNE HW 400 To HW 500 3.5 Pressure Differential pressure is zero or minimal for most applications. Where the radial shaft seals is subject to pressure, the sealing lips pressed against the shaft leading to increased temperature. In most cases incrase in temperature can ‘cause the sealing lip to turn around on axis [At over 0.2 bar and high RPM or at over 0.5 bar and low RPM, back rings o specially developed ral shaft seas ‘ih thick duet lips and supported metal inserts need to be used. Racial shaft seals must be stored ina dust free and dry environment, and they must remain in thet original packaging. This should be opened just before assembly. Specimens ‘should be re-packed aftr inspection. Excess humidity adversely affects some elastomers and may also initiate corrosion of metal housing and spring. o not throw radial shaft seals on shelves, or into boxes, or hang them on wires, hooks or nails. The sealing lips likey to be damaged. Seals are tobe stacked horizontally |We recommend that seals are stored as per-FIRST IN - FINAL OUT - principle, to avoid ageing on the shelf itself Avoid storage them in the Vicinity of heat sources or electric equipments that can emit ozone.
