From Roberto Söderhäll, Swedish Modules

Background
Swedish Modules worked during 2017 together with Ericsson in a development project regarding
modular Data Centers. One of the questions was the size/footprint of the module. During the years
Swedish Modules has developed a module size that are easy to use for scaling up the building size
and also cost efficient to transport. Swedish Modules was asked to benchmark the cost for
transportation, comparing these modules with ISO 40" containers. The transport was from Vara in
Sweden to the inland of Nigeria. It was transportation on roads in both countries and from
Gothenburg to Lagos on sea.
- It was a 500m2 Datacenter with 8 modules or 15 ISO Containers.
- Price indications was given from three different transport companies

Results
- In all cases the transportation of the modules were more cost effeicient comparing to the ISO
Containers
- Taberg was the only company that could offer a point to point transport
- When we added the cost for road transportation in Nigeria to DSV the costs were equal as you
see in the table below
Company Bertling DSV Tabergs Average
Price difference % 1,82 8,8 (0,21) 17,59 7,05

Conclusions
- The transportation costs when comparing ISO Containers with none certificated modules are
not always an issue
- We need to be aware of local regulations
- We should look for companies that can offer point to point transports
