Drinks that are swiftly made and supplied are referred to as ready-to-
drink. Often referred to as Food Additives (BTP), ready-to-drink beverages
combine a variety of substances, such as artificial sweeteners and preservatives,
that are purposefully added to drinks. The objective of study was to determine the
presence and concentration of cyclamate and benzoic acid in fruit soup drinks
that were being sold on Jalan Dr. Mansyur Medan Baru.
This study used a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, this descriptive study
approach measures the amount of sodium cyclamate and benzoic acid in samples
of 15 different brands of fruit soup drinks.
According to the research findings, nine out of fifteen samples contained
sodium cyclamate, as evidenced by the production of a white precipitate in the test
kit reaction utilizing Reagents A, B, and C, and the precipitation reaction using
BaCL2 reagent with NaNO2. Three samples out of fifteen samples were found to
contain benzoic acid by qualitative testing utilizing a color reaction with FeCL3
reagent and a test kit reaction with reagents A, B, and C. These reactions resulted
in the production of an orange precipitate and a salmon red precipitate. Sample G
had the highest average sodium cyclamate content (257.9304 mg/kg). In the
meanwhile, Sample A had the highest average benzoic acid content, measuring
103.9806 mg/kg.
The conclusion was drawn from 15 samples, of which 9 samples had
sodium cyclamate and 3 samples included benzoic acid. The samples were
examined to determine the amount of each ingredient in fruit soup drinks that
were being sold on Jalan DR Mansyur in Medan Baru. One sample had a sodium
cyclamate level that was higher than what BPOM RI No. 11 of 2019 allowed.
