Family Breakup
The huntings and killings of aristocrats eventually ended in 1795 when a new government
took over. At that time, the de Mazenod family was in Venice. Now that it was already possible to
recover the family’s properties which were confiscated by the revolutionaries, Eugene’s mother
Marie-Rose traveled back to Aix with Eugene’s sister, Ninette. Because her family background
was not aristocratic, divorcing her aristocratic husband would put her in a good position to salvage
some of his properties. Which is exactly what she eventually did, changing her title from “Mme la
Presidente de Mazenod” to plain “Mme Joannis.”
Because in the marriage settlement her family had stipulated that the dowry would remain
in Marie-Rose’s name, she was able to easily recover the Joanis properties. Not only that, using
clever machinations, she was also able to recover much of what had belonged to her husband.
Somehow, the Joanis family were able to convince authorities to hand over the de Mazenod
properties or at least delay the sale so that Marie-Rose could acquire them.
Thus, Marie-Rose could write to Charles Antoine saying, “You now have nothing,” and
adding that, if ever he returned to France, he would find that he had all the debts while she had all
the property. Where did that leave Eugene who was caught in the middle between parents who had
divorced over a question of money?
According to Fr. Alfred Hubenig, OMI, the de Mazenod family break up, while partly due
to their financial problems, was largely due to the “constant interference and animosity of the
jealous mother-in-law and neurotic sister-in-law, Mme Pierrefeu” (1967, p. 19). Eugene often
complained about the temperament of the latter:
She yells, screams, threatens to do away with herself, accuses her mother of always
showing partiality to her older daughter; in short, she goes through every kind of
wild nonsense.
Charles-Antoine was also not really happy when Marie-Rose brought her sister and her
mother with her in Nice during the first leg of their exile. He wrote to a friend:
I foresaw at the time everything I should have to suffer from this reunion, but was
powerless to prevent it, and I cannot possibly tell you everything the poor chevalier
and I had to put up with from that female triumvirate. We were compelled to share
the same room and both of us were ignored as though we were lackeys. They took
complete charge of everything, decided everything, gave all the orders. If by chance
we wished to remonstrate with any one of them, we saw the three of them rise up
against us like latter-day furies. Opposing them would have accomplished nothing
but commotion. Thus, we took the only line of conduct available to wise and
prudent people... retiring to our room. (cited in Hubenig, 2004, p. 19)
One could imagine what Eugene felt during the separation of his parents. They were just
together with all members of his family at the darkest period of their lives. Then, his mother went
back home together with her sister, leaving him to the care of his father. At that time, he never
thought that it would be the last time that they would be complete as a family. He was only told
that the reason for them leaving was to secure family interest back in Aix. Yet, he learned that his
beloved mother had already divorced his father, even without consulting her own son who already
missed her so much. Amidst this, his father’s lack of money prevented him from pursuing social
activities in Venice that would have compensated the brokenness and loneliness that he felt with
his family. It is in context where the seed of vocation was planted in Eugene through the guidance
of his spiritual mentor, Don Bartolo Zenilli.
