Syllabus
Introduction to basic properties of dynamics, problem formulation and solution concepts, coordinate systems,
planar motion of rigid bodies, Newton's Second Law, free body diagrams, static and dynamic friction, inclined
plane motion, relative motion, velocity and acceleration diagrams, and rotating and reciprocating components.
Rigid body motion with applied forces and torques. Mass moments of inertia, parallel axis theorem, simple and
complex bodies, thin plates and experimental measurement. Introduction to mechanical power transfer systems
including gears (fixed axis and epicyclic), belt drives (flat and Vee belts), Hooke's joints, and friction clutches (disk,
cone and centrifugal).
Introduction
Machine Dynamics aims to provide students with a foundation and knowledge of dynamics applicable
to mechanics and machines. This includes an appreciation of the importance of machine dynamics in Engineering
systems and the basic engineering tools to analyse the behaviour of mechanical systems for the purposes of
engineering design. The course material is designed specifically for mechatronic and mechanical engineering
applications.

Learning Activities
Face to face lectures (1 hour per week), also recorded with iLecture, present course material. An additional 1 hour
will be delivered online some weeks (pending demand and timing).
Face to face workshops (1 hour per week) examine aspects of problems related to the course material.
Problem based tutorials (1 hour per week) allow students to identify areas of misunderstanding and apply unit
theory.
Three practical Laboratory activities (three 2 hour sessions throughout semester) complement the theory
examined with hands-on physical examples.

Detailed information on assessment tasks
1. Short weekly quizzes will be released on Mondays (with the exception of the first and final weeks of
semester), with content related to unit material up to and including the week before each quiz is released. The quizzes
are both formative and summative in nature, both aiding learning (and allowing students to gauge their progression
each week), and contributing to the unit mark.
It is strongly recommended that each quiz is completed in each week that it is released, however it is recognised that
some flexibility is helpful in busy periods or if students have questions which can't be raised in the current week's
tutorial. As such:
l each quiz is due on the Sunday almost two weeks after release (eg week 2's quiz will be released Monday March
6, and nominally due 11.59pm Sunday March 19);
l there will be 10 quizzes in total, of which the best 8 (equally weighted) results will contribute to the unit
mark, worth 3.75% of the unit mark each. If less than 8 quizzes are attempted, a mark of zero will be included
for each the missing attempts. As such, there is no penalty for missing two of the quizzes, but only attempting
7 means a maximum of 26.25/30, etc. Even if you score 100% for all of the first 8 quizzes, it's recommended
that you attempt the last two as well for practice and feedback.
You will be allowed two attempts at each quiz, but please be aware that questions and numbers may be different on
the second attempt. The highest mark will be recorded whether on the first or second attempt. Assistance for specific
issues can be provided in tutorials, though answers may be in the form of guiding questions, but assessment
extensions will not be considered.

2. Details of the laboratory program can be found on Blackboard. It involves three laboratory activities where
students must complete measurement and calculation tasks during the lab session. Active participation in
the laboratory classes is assessed.
Students are required to wear enclosed footwear in the Laboratory at all times. Students will be excluded
from attending the laboratory if correct footwear is not used.
The final laboratory report must be formally written and submitted through Turnitin. Further information
will be supplied via Blackboard.
3. Two hours (+ 10 minutes reading) centrally scheduled face to face examination covering the entire unit
content, time and date to be confirmed. Only university approved calculators are allowed to be used.
Pass requirements
Students must achieve both a final unit mark of 50% or greater, and a final examination mark of 40% or greater,
to pass this unit.
Assessment Moderation
Pre-marking moderation
Staff responsible for assessing student work will, as a minimum, be provided with an assessment rubric (or
marking guide) in advance of the marking task. Assessment task details and marking criteria will be made
available to students when the assessment task is assigned or in the unit outline. Other pre-marking moderation
activities may be employed as appropriate to each assessment task.
Intra-marking / Post-marking moderation
Intra-marking and/or post-marking moderation will include (but is not limited to) at least one of the following
methods:
Late assessment
Where the submission of a late assessment is permitted, late penalties will be consistently applied in this unit.
Where a late assessment is permitted for an assessment item or the entirety of the unit (refer to the Assessment
Schedule table in this Unit Outline) and the student does not have an approved assessment extension:
1. For assessment items submitted within the first 24 hours after the due date/time, students will be penalised
by a deduction of 5% of the total marks allocated for the assessment task;
2. For each additional 24 hour period commenced an additional penalty of 10% of the total marks allocated
for the assessment item will be deducted; and
3. Assessment items submitted more than 168 hours late (7 calendar days) will receive a mark of zero.
Where late assessment is NOT permitted for an assessment item or the entirety of the unit (refer to the
Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline) and the student does not have an approved assessment extension:
1. All assessment items submitted after the due date/time will receive a mark of zero.
Assessment extension
Where an application for an assessment extension is permitted for an assessment item(s) within this unit (refer to
the Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline):
1. A student who is unable to complete an assessment item by/on the due date/time as a result of exceptional
circumstances beyond the student’s control, may apply for an assessment extension on the Assessment
Extension Application Form as prescribed by the Academic Registrar. The form is available on the Forms
page at https://students.curtin.edu.au/essentials/forms-documents/forms/ and also within the student's
OASIS (My Studies tab – Quick Forms) account.
2. The student will be expected to submit their application for an Assessment Extension with supporting
documentation via the online form.
3. Timely submission of this information supports the assessment process. For applications that are declined,
delayed submission may have significant ramifications on the possible marks awarded.
4. An application may be accepted up to five working days after the due date/time of the assessment item
where the student is able to provide a verifiable explanation as to why they were not able to submit the
application prior to the assessment due date/time
Where an application for an assessment extension is NOT permitted for an assessment item(s) within this unit
(refer to the Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline):
1. All assessment items submitted after the due date/time will be subject to late penalties or receive a mark of
zero depending on the unit permitting late assessment submissions.
Deferred assessments
If your results show that you have been granted a deferred assessment you should immediately check OASIS for
details.
Deferred examinations/tests will be held from 12/07/2023 to 21/07/2023 . Notification to students will be made
after the Board of Examiners’ meeting via the Official Communications Channel (OCC) in OASIS.
Further assessment
Further assessments, if granted by the Board of Examiners, will be held between 12/07/2023 and 21/07/2023 .
Notification to students will be made after the Board of Examiners meeting via the Official Communications
Channel in OASIS.
It is the responsibility of the student to be available to complete the requirements of a further assessment. If your
results show that you have been granted a further assessment you should immediately check OASIS for details.
