A music producer wonders how the average duration of songs has changed over the decade from 2010 to
2020.

To compare the average length, he takes a random sample of the most popular songs in 2010 and 2020.

The following table shows the data in seconds for the two samples.

The producer is interested to see whether the mean length of the songs in these two groups is
significantly different.

At the 5% level of significance, a t-test was used to compare the means.

Assume that the data is normally distributed and the standard deviations between the two groups are
equal.

(a) (i) State the null hypothesis.

(ii) State the alternative hypothesis. [2]

(b) Determine the p-value for this test. [2]

(c) State and justify the conclusion of the test in the context of the question. [2]

A clothes shop is designing an advertising board for an upcoming sale.

It is the shape of a triangular-based prism and made from wooden panels.

The panels are machine cut such that the lengths are exact. BC = 2.3 metres, DC = 2 metres and
EA = EB = 1.6 metres.

A wooden supporting rod, connecting points E to X , is used to strengthen the advertising board.

(a) Calculate the height, EX , of the advertising board. [2]

A workman hand-cuts the rod to a length 1.26 metres, but this is only accurate to the nearest
centimetre.

(b) (i) Determine the upper and lower bound for supporting rod.

(ii) Justify that the rod will not fit. [2]

The workman decides to precision cut a new supporting rod that will connect E to C .

(c) Find the angle the new supporting rod makes with the base of the prism. [3]
