Policies and How the policy and procedure or documentation

procedures/documentation informs or contributes to a detailed traffic analysis

Cultural and heritage Cultural and Heritage data contributes in helping

management understand the cultural and heritage issues we need
to consider in the Traffic Analysis Plan.
This data is usually provided by local councils and
aboriginal land councils, which includes information
on aboriginal archaeological sites or heritage buildings
in the area concerned for the traffic analysis.

Environmental The Environmental Management plan informs about

management the possible impacts of civil construction works such
as, soil erosion, water pollution, land degradation,
destruction of habitat.
It also includes different local state legislations and
best practices on how to prevent or manage the civil
work impacts.

Safe work method The SWMS informs about the hazards and risks
statement (SWMS) associated with the activities for the development.
This is a planning tool used to control and manage the
risks to ensure work will be done safely.

Geotechnical management Geotechnical management contributes by providing

information about subsurface conditions, soil and
ground water. This information will be useful in
considering what options are suitable for the
transportation infrastructure once the traffic analysis

has taken place.

Hydrological and Hydrological and meteorological management

meteorological contributes to a detailed traffic analysis by providing
management information on maximum probable flood in the
proposed site, the forecasting of water resource
management, supporting information for technical
specifications in the design. For extreme weather
events, meteorological date helps engineers to design
infrastructure from intensity, frequency and duration
data charts. This can be useful in considering what
options are suitable for the infrastructure once the
traffic analysis has taken place.

Incident and emergency Incident and Emergency response contributes to

response creating an efficient site safety management plan.
Infrastructure works will always have high risks which
will require emergency evacuation and incident
procedures to inform the people in the site how to
manage incidents/emergencies.

Performance reviews Performance Reviews often held annually provide

information on how well the team performed over the
year. This includes an assessment of the employee’s
performance, their strengths and weaknesses to help
set future goals.
This can also be used to indicate performance on how
well the work was done during the traffic analysis.

Quality management The quality management plan contributes by reducing

the risk of project failure. This includes methodologies
and standards for managing the project and producing
output, what are the agreed processes for managing
changes, problems and incidents during the
production.

Risk assessment and Risk Assessment and Management starts with

management identifying the risks associated in Infrastructure works
and the controls needed to mitigate these risks.
This contributes by establishing the impact and
consequences of the risks.

System close outs (project System close outs contribute by making sure all work
closure) has been completed, confirm that all agreed-upon
processes have been executed and to formally
recognize the completion of the project.

Work health and safety The Work Health and Safety (WHS) policy plays a
crucial role in informing and contributing to a detailed
traffic analysis in several ways: Safety Standards and
Regulations, Risk Assessment, Training and
Competency, Emergency Preparedness, Consultation
and Communication, Continuous Improvement.

management and road safety initiatives.

4. Outline the purpose of a safe work method statement.

SWMS

Planning tool that identifies the hazards and risks associated with those activities and
documents that controls what will be put in place to control the risks and ensure the work
will be done safely. It must be in place whathever high-risk activities will take place.

5. Assume that you have been asked to conduct a traffic impact study for a redesign of a
road that is experiencing traffic congestion. List two (2) techniques that you could use
to identify and evaluate options for the redesign.
-Brainstorm solutions
-Discussing options with others

-Techniques to enhance the traffic conditions.

6. Explain each of the following traffic analysis techniques and their use in traffic analysis.

Traffic data analysis Description and use in traffic analysis

technique

Traffic flow Rate at which vechicles pass a given point on the

roadway and is normally given in terms of vehicle per
hour

Level of service An indicator of queuing incidence and delay time

incurred, for example an intersection. An indicator is
produced ranging from A to F. Also of A indicates
excellent level of service whereby drivers delay at a
minimum and they clear the intersection at each
change of signals. Values of B to D are acceptable in
normal traffic conditions. Value E and F are typically
considered undesirable.

Traffic capacity Maximum potential capacity of any given

requirements transportation infrastructure such as a road. It is
associated with traffic volume and flow and is the
maximum traffic flow that canb be accommodated in.

Percentages Information on the distribution of trips. For example

XX% go on to the north on X road, XX% go to the east
on X road and so on. This gives insights into future
traffic use.

7. Explain how road user behaviour impacts on road capacity.

Inattentive driving, speeding, reckless driving and other behaviours can slow overall
traffic. Also, failure to merge in an orderly fashion, frequent exits and entrances can
cause traffic to slow.

8. Explain two (2) methods for conducting project cost estimating and at least one
advantage and disadvantage of each.
-Analogous estimating: The cost is estimated by comparing it with similar projects
previously completed by the organisation. This is also known as top down estimating.
The technique while low cost and quick and does not provide a reliable estimation.

-Parametric estimation: Similar to analogous estimating. It uses the historical data to

calculate cost estimates, as well as statistical data. Variables from similar projects are
reviewed and applied to the current project. Accuracy is better than analogous
estimating but there is still a few elements of unreliability.

-Three point estimating

-Program evaluation and review technique
-Bottom-up estimating

9. List five (5) components that should be included in a traffic analysis plan.

1.- Project details

2.- Source of data will be used
3.- Human resources requirements

4.- Key tasks to be completed

5.- Progress reporting
6.- Communication requirements.

10. Outline the concept of a self-evaluation, including one advantage and one disadvantage
of this method.

The individual assesses their own performance which could be against a specific criteria.
Advantage: Individual can contribute this information to their formal performance
review.
Disadvantage: They may have difficulties in rating themselves.

11. Outline two (2) performance review techniques.

1.- 360 degree feedback: This type of performance appraisal includes feedback from the
manager and employee, as well as from the team members and spurces.
2.- Management by objective method: This involves an employee and manager agreeing
to set of attainable performance goals that the employee will aim to achieve over a
specific time period.

12. List two (2) types of software/technology that could be used to present a traffic
analysis.

13. List three (3) characteristics of effective working relationships.

1.- Communication: Open, clear, and frequent communication is essential for building and
maintaining effective working relationships. This includes active listening, sharing
information transparently, providing constructive feedback, and resolving conflicts through
respectful dialogue.
2.- Trust and Respect: Trust forms the foundation of any successful working relationship.
Team members should trust each other's competence, integrity, and commitment to the
team's goals. Respect for each other's opinions, ideas, and diversity fosters a positive work
environment where individuals feel valued and supported.
3.- Collaboration and Teamwork: Effective working relationships thrive on collaboration and
teamwork. Team members work together towards common objectives, leveraging each
other's strengths, skills, and knowledge. They share responsibilities, contribute ideas, and
support each other to achieve collective success.
