Immigration Questions for Student


● Immigration can ask anything about your personal and family
details.
Ans: You need to tell personal family details.

● What does your father/mother do?


Ans: Mention the occupation of your father/mother. The Officer may ask
further questions to check the income status of your parents.

● Why did you choose Canada for study?


Ans: Canada is recognized worldwide for our outstanding quality of
education, Cultural diversity, Safe and peaceful environment for
newcomers. Additionally, you can add your personal reasons.

● Why did you choose that particular college/university?


Ans: Based on your research, you should be able to highlight the
advantages of joining that particular college/institute/university.
Additionally, you can always highlight the unique advantages of that
college.

● Which program will you be joining and why?


Ans: Make sure you are aware of the course/program start and end
date. Do your research to understand the importance of the
course/programme and highlight the benefits of it. Based on your past
studies and experience, and your interest in that particular
course/program, you can prepare a statement that describes how this
particular program/course will help you build your career.
● What is the duration of your program in Canada?
Ans: Tell your course duration. Make sure it matches your letter of
acceptance

● What are you going to do after you finish the program?


Ans: Please DO NOT answer “I want to work and apply for my PR in
Canada” This is the worst answer you can give. Your answer here could
be a variation of these ones depending on your actual case:
○ I will return to my home country to help run my family’s business
○ I may look at pursuing my graduate-level studies later in a
different country
○ I don’t have an exact plan for my career but will return to my
[home country] and decide with my family
○ I will maintain my status as an international student here and
apply for a post-graduate work permit to gain Canadian work
experience before I return to my home country as this will help me
a lot with my career back home when applying to larger
companies.

● Who is going to cover your expenses in Canada? Or Who will be


paying for your expenses here?
Ans: Depending on whether it is covered by your parents or a bank
through a student loan, mention the details of it. This question will also
verify the details provided by you in the visa application form.

● Have you applied to any other universities/ colleges?


Ans: Be honest and mention the name of colleges you applied for, if
any. The consular officer would somehow find out and lying will result in
undesirable consequences, even visa rejection.

● If it’s a 2-year program, what are you going to do to pay for your
second year?
Ans: DO NOT say “I will work in Canada as a student since I am
allowed to do part-time work” – this is the wrong answer. You have to
answer that your parents, family, or financial sponsor in your home
country has income or savings, and they will send you money on a
regular basis. They may have some follow-up questions on this and
request documents.

● What is your qualification in India?


Ans: You can speak about your recent education in India.

● Where did you do your schooling in India?


Ans: Mention the school/ colleges and city from where you did your
schooling or undergraduate course.

● Do you have any relatives/friends in Canada?


Ans: Answer in a yes/no. If you have relatives, mention your
relationship with them. If your answer is no, make sure you answer
without any hesitation and show your eagerness to meet new people
and make them your friends and family in Canada.

● Where are you from in India?


Ans: Tell the officer about where you are from. Be specific.

● Where will you be staying in Canada?


Ans: You can provide the address of your stay and mention whether it
is a temporary arrangement or if you plan on living there until the end of
your course/program.

● Do you plan to work in Canada?


Ans: If your visa allows you to work while studying, express your desire
to work there to boost your career or to support yourself, however, if
your visa doesn't allow you to work in Canada, inform the Officer that
you have no intentions of working in Canada and would like to return
once the course/program is completed.

● Have you ever been to Canada before?


Ans: Answer honestly. If you have visited Canada before, tell the
interviewer about your previous trip, including the purpose of the trip,
duration of stay, etc. If you have never been to Canada before, say that
you didn’t get the chance to travel or study there.

● If you are a mature student in your late 30s or 40s, they may ask
you what you do in your home country i.e., your profession, did
you take time off? Are you returning to your employer after your
studies?
Ans: Yes, you must reconfirm that you will return to your employer or
another job back home and that you are studying to upgrade your
career with the existing employer or a new one post-graduation. Having
proof of your occupation/profession with your Letter of Acceptance,
IRCC approval letter, and financial proof of funds may be helpful.

● Are you travelling alone or with someone?


Ans: Depending on your travel plan, answer the question confidently.

● Where is your college/ institute located in Canada?


Ans: It is important to do some research about the college/ university
where you will be studying in Canada. Mention the name of the city
where the college is located. Name some popular places or figures in
the city.
