Beige Book – Click for Release -- Overall, economic activity in the twelve Districts
showed slight to modest growth since late February, with only two Districts reporting no
change. Consumer spending saw limited growth with mixed reports across Districts and
spending categories, particularly with weak discretionary spending due to heightened
price sensitivity among consumers. Auto spending was bolstered in some areas but
remained sluggish in others. Tourism activity increased modestly, though reports varied.
Manufacturing activity slightly declined with only three Districts reporting growth.
Nonfinancial services activity saw slight increases, while bank lending remained flat.
Residential construction saw a slight increase, along with strengthened home sales in
most Districts. However, nonresidential construction remained flat, and commercial real
estate leasing declined slightly. Contacts expressed a cautiously optimistic outlook on
the economy.
Commentary from Fed Chair Powell - In summary, the US economy has shown strong
performance over the past year with growth exceeding 3%, supported by rebounding
supply, robust spending, and employment gains. The labor market remains strong with
payroll job gains averaging above 275,000 per month and an unemployment rate below
4% for 26 consecutive months. However, progress towards the 2% inflation goal has
been slow, with inflation hovering around 2.8% and showing little change. The Federal
Reserve has taken a cautious approach, seeking greater confidence in sustainable
inflation before considering easing policy. Despite the risks, policy remains well-
positioned to handle higher inflation or unexpected labor market weakening. Overall,
the Fed remains committed to achieving sustainable inflation over time while allowing
data and the evolving outlook to guide policy decisions.
What is Bitcoin Halving? Bitcoin halving is an event that happens approximately every
four years, where the reward for Bitcoin miners is cut in half. This reduction in rewards
helps control the rate at which new bitcoins are created, making Bitcoin a scarce asset.
It's built into the Bitcoin protocol to maintain the cryptocurrency's value over time.
