Geography Project:
Freshwater in my community
Index
Introduction:
The Kouga water supply, which supplies clean water to Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage
will be discussed in this research investigation. My reason for researching this project
will be to learn more about where the water I use daily comes from and to gain a better
understanding of issues related to water in my community, diseases related to water
and possible alternative water supply in case of water shortages in Port Elizabeth

Research Objectives:
In this research I aim to address current issues with water related in Port Elizabeth, the attitude
of those in my community towards conservation of water and more. I hope that with the
knowledge gained from this investigation, I will be able to educate those around me - My peers,
family and the people that make up my community. I hope that people will be informed about
possible diseases related to the water in my area and that people will gain a better
understanding as to why water conservation and shortages are necessary.
Research Hypothesis:
I believe that the overall quality, reputation and government action to better the water is
negative. It is due to my own personal experience that I have decided this. Publicly accessed
water in my community is often seen as unsafe for drinking purposes, and water shortages
(water-shedding) are frequent.

Study Area

Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth)

Port Elizabeth, also known as the Windy City and is the
largest city in the Eastern Province. With the diverse
vegetation, and the hiking trails littered around it is seen
as a very beautiful place. Located at exactly
33.9137° S, 25.5827° E. However due to poor planning
from the government and constantly having to repair
infrastructure, Port Elizabeth has seen a decrease in
availability and water quality.
