Safety notes 2
Important notes on the use of SOFTNET-IE RNA

NOTICE
Transfer rate
The "SOFTNET-IE RNA" product is suitable for a transfer rate T of 100 Mbps/second with
long packets. With short packets, the transfer rate is reduced by a factor corresponding to
how much shorter the packets are than 1500 bytes.
T = 100 Mbps * packet length / 1500 bytes
At higher transfer rates, the processor load of the PC can reach values at which the PC no
longer works efficiently.

Note
Redundancy mechanisms impair the performance of the system. You should therefore make
sure that there are adequate resources for the processor, memory and network. If the PC is
overloaded for a long time (more than 80% processor or memory load), this may result in
restrictions and functional disturbances.

Note
The quality of redundancy depends largely on the network adapters used. By updating the
adapter drivers, the response can be significantly changed.

Note
The current standard prescribes that any redundant packet that arrives with a delay greater
than 400 ms is treated as a new packet and not discarded.

Operating Instructions, 11/2011, G8976-C272-01 7
Safety notes

Note
The Ethernet adapters used must not be used actively from the point in time when the virtual
adapter is configured; in other words, for example, not configured or integrated in other
software.
After creating the virtual adapter, this is the only one to be used. If you use the real adapters
assigned to the virtual adapter, this can lead to functional disturbances.

Note
Use of the virtual adapter in configured mode is not supported.

WARNING
SCALANCE X204RNA products
Note the warnings and security notices in the "SIMATIC NET Industrial Ethernet Switches
SCALANCE X204RNA / SCALANCE X204RNA EEC" operating instructions if you use

8 Operating Instructions, 11/2011, G8976-C272-01
Product description 3
What is the Parallel Redundancy Protocol?
The Parallel Redundancy Protocol is a redundancy protocol for Ethernet networks. It is
defined in Part 3 of the IEC 62439 standard. In the remainder of the text, PRP always stands
for the PRP-1 protocol. The areas of application of PRP are distributed applications with high
reliability demands that depend on the high availability of the network. Compared with classic
fault-tolerant networks, bumpless redundancy is possible with PRP. This redundancy
procedure can maintain data communication without interruption if there are interruptions in
the network. Other redundancy procedures have a reconfiguration time of the network of, for
example 200 ms (MRP, 50 nodes in the ring) or 300 ms (HSR, 50 nodes in the ring).
PRP has the advantage that it uses parallel, separate networks made up of standard
network components. The end devices that use this method are connected to both networks
via two integrated device interfaces or via a SCALANCE X204RNA or a SCALANCE
X204RNA EEC. This means that the frame of the end device can be transferred at the same
time via both networks. If a transmission path is interrupted, the frame arrives at its
destination via the second path.

Note
When using SOFTNET-IE RNA, you can only use the CP 1612 A2 or gigabit Ethernet
network adapters that support long Ethernet frames as the communications adapter.

Which network topologies can be implemented with SOFTNET-IE RNA?

With the CP 1612 A2 communications processor or gigabit Ethernet network adapters, PCs
can be connected to a "Parallel Redundancy Protocol" network.
With SOFTNET-IE RNA and a SCALANCE X204RNA or SCALANCE X204RNA EEC, a
totally integrated solution with network components and protective devices can be
implemented for a substation or process application.

Note
Make sure that the maximum permitted cable lengths for the relevant devices are not
exceeded. You will find the permitted cable lengths in the Operating Instructions of the
relevant device.

SOFTNET-IE RNA V8.1

10 Operating Instructions, 11/2011, G8976-C272-01
Product description

Example of use

With the Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP), each node must transmit packets on two
independent, parallel networks (in the graphic LAN A and LAN B). These are two physically
separate networks with a bus (linear), star or ring topology. The PRP destination device must
also be connected to the two networks. This then receives each packet twice. The first
packet is forwarded to the application. The second received packet is then detected and
discarded if this reaction is configured. This achieves N-1 redundancy without
reconfiguration (= bumpless switchover).
The so-called DANs (double attached nodes) that use this method are connected to both
networks via two integrated device interfaces or via a SCALANCE X204RNA or a
SCALANCE X204RNA EEC. This means that the frame of the end device can be transferred
at the same time via both networks. If a transmission path is interrupted, the frame arrives at
its destination via the second path.
Generally, the two separate networks are known as LAN A and LAN B. Since the packets
created for the particular line have an ID, it is even possible to identify packets sent via the
wrong network.
Devices that are connected to only one network, such as switches are known as SANs
(single attached nodes). These devices require a unique IP address via both networks.

Installing and uninstalling 4
4.1 Notes on setting up
Read the following notes before you start to set up your system:
1. Identify the networks clearly, for example by labeling them (LAN A / LAN B).
2. Use a uniform setup.
Example: Always assign the left / top adapter on a PC to the network of LAN A and the
right / bottom adapter to the network of LAN B.
3. The assignment of the hardware to the corresponding entry in the system can be difficult.
To simplify this, you can, for example, connect the adapter for LAN A to an active
network, this is then noted in the network view and you can now assign this adapter to
LAN A and rename it accordingly.
4. Do not connect to the network until after the installation. With the help of diagnostics, you
can then recognize whether an adapter was connected to the wrong network as long as
an active redundancy partner exists.
5. Try to set up the network as symmetrically as possible. Due to differences in the number
of received packets on the line as shown by RNA diagnostics, you can identify
redundancy problems in the network more easily.

4.2 Installation

User experience
To install SIMATIC NET PC software products, you should have experience of installing
software under the Windows version you are using (Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2
or Windows XP, see section "Technical data (Page 41)").

Requirements and necessary permissions

To be able to install and operate SOFTNET-IE RNA on your PC, you require the following:
● 2 free Ethernet network adapters
● 2 separate Ethernet networks
● Administrator privileges for installation
● Per PC and product one software license

General information

Note
Screen savers
Using a screen saver during operation can cause system overload.
Some screen savers do not release parts of memory again. This leads to a continuous
reduction in usable memory.

Note
Virus scanners
The use of a virus scanner during runtime can impair or severely slow down communication.
Dynamic virus protection, in particular using gatekeeper mechanisms, is therefore not
advisable. This is especially the case when trace files of the communication are written at
the same time.

Note
If you want to use SNMP, the Windows SNMP service must be available prior to installation.
How to do this is explained in section "SNMP service (Page 27)".

5. On completion of the driver installation, the user interface for setting up the virtual adapter
is displayed.

6. In the configuration dialog box that follows, make the settings for adapter selection, MAC
address selection and add a virtual adapter. You can configure up to 2 virtual adapters.

Note
Note that if you want to make changes in the configuration dialog box following
configuration, you must uninstall and then reinstall.

Follow the steps outlined below:

● Adapter selection
For each virtual adapter that you want to create, you require two real Ethernet adapters.
For "Virtual Adapter Name", enter the name of the virtual adapter you want to create.
Below this, assign a real Ethernet adapter to each of the redundant lines of the virtual
adapter.
The available Ethernet adapters are displayed under "Adapter A" and "Adapter B". If you
select an Ethernet adapter on one side, this Ethernet adapter is then no longer available
on the other side.
● MAC address selection
In this area, you enter the MAC address of the virtual adapter. The real Ethernet adapters
have this MAC address on both redundant lines. This means the system has this MAC
address for communication partners on both lines.
Both the fixed MAC addresses and the MAC addresses set by the software of the real
Ethernet adapters are displayed.
You can now select one of these MAC addresses or enter a MAC address yourself. If you
enter a MAC address yourself, make sure that a practical address is selected. No
multicast address, broadcast address or an address that already exists in the network
must be entered.
If in doubt, select the burned-in MAC address of the real Ethernet adapter of Line A.

this in the lower part of the dialog. Note that any changes to the settings require a
reinstallation and configuration of the virtual adapter. When you have configured the
virtual adapter(s), you can start installation. Click the "Next" button.
● Removing a virtual adapter
With the "Next" button, you can release the prepared virtual adapters again. As a result,
the real Ethernet adapters are available again and can be used in another combination.

Generating the control file automatically

Description
The control file is generated by the setup program automatically by making a trial installation.

Note
The recording must take place on a system that is similar to the one on which the automatic
setup will take place later. This will not work, for example, if a recording is created on a 64-bit
system and this is then used as the template on a 32-bit system.

The setup program can be controlled by a batch file.

Example of a batch file

The batch file shown here generates the control file "Ra-Auto.ini".

cd \sw
setup.exe /record

The lines of the batch file example have the following significance:

Line Meaning
1 The program changes to the folder
2 The program starts the manual test installation and generates the control file "Ra_Auto.ini" with the "/record"
parameter. You are prompted to name the folder for storing the "Ra_Auto.ini" file at the start of the trial
installation.
All user actions in the dialogs are stored there.
The record action stops after the "component selection" and closes the program.
