Product Design and Development

(An Introduction)
RDA 111: Product Design and Development
Product Design
and Development
Some Sort of Introduction with a robot foot in the
background.

• 2D and 3D CAD Design

• Product Life Cycle
• Material Selection
• Prototyping (3D Printing)
• Manufacturing (Machining)
• I am Robot Developer, Hit me!
What is Product Design and Development?
• Product design is how you design a product! (my humble definition)
• Product design is a process that goes from 0 (the idea) to a 100 (the final
product)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
• Product design is to create a new product to be sold by a business to its
customers. A very board coefficient and effective generation and
development of ideas through a process that leads to new products.
(Wikipedia)
• Product design refers to those activities involved in creating the styling,
look and feel of the product, deciding on the product’s mechanical
architecture, selecting materials and processes, and engineering the
various components necessary to make the product work. (rqriley.com)
• Industrial/Product design is a process of design applied to products that are to
be manufactured through techniques of mass production. (Wikipedia)

Here’s the big picture, we get to create designs for various physical products like
consumer electronics, automobile, robots etc. while considering the function
and form of the actual products.
PROCESS
Big question: How do you come up with ideas?

Robot arms in various applications. Some best fit medical spaces while some look ready for
combat.
