This is because 3n + 2n means ‘n + n+ plus n + n’, which is equivalent to 52. ‘You can write the expression 8x + x as 8x + Lx and then simplify it to 9x. > You can only simplify like terms. These are parts of an expression that have the same letter. ‘The expression 3x + 8x has two like terms. You can simplify it to 11x. ‘The expression 5x + 2y has two unlike terms and you cannot simplify it.
