Bladder Training

 bladder training encourages people to extend


the time between voiding and regain continence
ability.
Purpose

 bladder training for urinary retention,


 weaning from foley catheter,
 urinary catheter clamping protocol,
 bladder retraining with foley catheter ,
 improve voiding function in patients with long-
term indwelling catheter or incontinence
equipment

 Disposable gloves

Procedure

1. Introduce self and verify clients’


identity. Explain procedure.
To enhance clients cooperation and to
gain clients trust
2. perform hand hygiene
Prevent contamination and transfer of
microorganism
3. Provide privacy by closing room door
and bedside curtain
To maintain client’s privacy
4. Check if urinary catheters remaining in place.
To ensure proper placement of the catheter and its
patency
5. The catheters were clamped for 4 hours, and then
unclamped for 15 minutes, allowing them to drain
completely
Clamping causes the bladder to feel the urge to
urinate before removing the catheter
6. Instruct the patient to inform the nurse if an urge to
urinate is felt before the completion of 4 hours
clamping
To determine clients readiness prior to the removal of
the catheter
Procedure
7. Repeat the re-clamping and the
unclamping procedure throughout the
shifts
8. Remove the catheter if the bladder
training is successful and the client shows
ability to control the urge to urinate in due
time
9. Document the findings
