Maternal and Child Health Nursing Return Demonstration 1

Nursing Care During Labor

Good morning ma’am I am Wish Daguio and today I will be demonstrating the nursing care
during labor. Nursing care during labor includes (2) procedures the IE or the intravaginal examination
and the leopold’s maneuver. But before we start let me state first the purposes of our nursing care in
labor. Why do we have to conduct this types of procedures? Fist of, this is conducted during the most
sensitive time of pregnancy where a mother (is expecting) has series of contractions and eventually
expels the fetus and the placenta out of the uterus. It is sensitive in a sense that both of them could
have possibilities of meeting harm along the process. So in order for us to prevent that we need to
conduct preparatory measures to ensure safety for both of them.

Nursing care during labor is conducted for purposes of

 Determining cervical readiness
 Determining fetal position
 Determining extent of cervical effacement and dilatation.
Effacement- shortening and thinning of the uterine cervix during labor so that only the external
orifice remains.
Dilatation - the act of stretching, widening , or enlarging an organ or part of the cervix.
 To assess for any vaginal bleeding.
 To check for amniotic fluid status.

When conducting these procedures, from time-to-time we need to update our the patient about the
procedure and our findings to help them ease their anxiety. Since also this procedure is intrusive and
also for us to invite cooperation. Also always remember to preserve the patient’s dignity by practicing
proper draping.

The equipments that we will be needing are our PPE, our glove, lubricating solution, and aseptic
solution.
