What non-Wizard Spells would be Useful for a level 13 Wizard

For Context I am a level 13 wizard in a 4+ year campaign, and I just got the
ability to add any spell of any class to my spellbook and cast it as though it were
a wizard spell, so long as the spell is level 4 or lower (though I can upcast
beyond 4). I’m overwhelmed with different ideas, especially when factoring in the
spell contingency. Curious what other experienced Wizard players would do

Has a small tid-bit about a certain race's lore ever completely turned you off from
wanting to play that race
For example, I find Aarakocra's very cool and fascinating but I really dislike how
short their lifespans are. It's just a personal thing, I just really don't like
having my character either be quite young to the world or practically on death's
door because of it. And knowing that my character (if they survive the campaign) is
going to die not really that long after the end of the campaign compared to my
other party members just rubs me the wrong way. Of course, I can just ask the DM if
Aarakocra's can have a more standard lifespan in their world but not every DM is
willing to do this, and asking a DM to change a race's lore just to make me feel
more at ease seems like over-stepping a boundary that I don't really like. Is this
just a personal thing that doesn't even matter all that much and I'm overthinking
it Yeah. But that's kinda what this thread is all about lol.

How often is the DC announced in your games

For both DMs and players... At your tables, how often is the DM announcing things
like DC, armor class, etc I feel like the immersion-forward approach is to never
tell the players a lot of these stats. But, it can also be fun when the players
know there is a number they need to beat. As a DM, I have been keeping all of these
secret. But, I feel like we might be missing out by not having players have a goal
to roll for in a lot of cases. Thoughts

PSA for all DMs Drink more water

PSA for all DMs Drink more water

We all know drinking water is important anyways, but in the case of someone that
speaks a lot, this is even more important. The amount of DMs I've seen that don't
drink water during a session or replace it with something like energy drinks, cola,
coffee, etc., is more than it should be. You need to have plenty of water beside
you, and drink every few minutes. Don't wait for your throat to start getting sore.
Also during breaks, you should try to speak less to rest your throat. Take care of
yourselves. That's all I wanted to say, thank you. Have a great week.

Is 20 AC with SoF as bad as my DM claims

I'm playing a cleric with 18 base AC (15 from Half plate armor and +3 from Dex) and
last session me and our monk got split from the party and ambushed by goblins.
Since we were majorly outnumbered, I cast Shield of Faith on myself to get to AC 20
since Goblins always have poison and they really messed us up in the past. It ended
up still being a really close battle and we literally would have both died without
the AC 20 since the Goblins critted thrice, taking me down to 4 health and Monk to
1. Pretty much throughout the entire fight my DM was talking about how it was
rigged and the goblins were always 1 short of hitting (Tbh i was more converned
with them consistently hitting 19s in the first place, we would have been so dead).
So is 20 AC actually just broken Some more information ig, Level 3 party in a
homebrew campaign but the DM kinda adjusts monsters to us, the Goblins all had a +1
to hit and apparently some extra trait to counter high AC EDIT Thanks for all the
responses, they really kinda help me feel less bad. I should probably also note
that I did make a mistake in how my AC is calculated, brain just stopped working
ig, but yeah my character gets +2 AC from a shield so it's Half Plate 14, Dex 2 and
Shield 2. No idea if a +2 shield is a thing you should have at level 3 but our DM
sold it to me so ig it's fine

How can I gently tell my DM to let me play my freaking classcharacter

How can I gently tell my DM to let me play my freaking classcharacter

We are 5 sessions into the campaign, it has been very good so far, lot's of fun
roleplay, puzzles, and decentgood combat. The story has been extremely on rails so
far, which I am ok with as our DM is a first timer, but he's got a good story and
we're all having fun. The problem is when I try to do things outside of his plans,
and he railroads me back into what he expected me to do. I am playing a rogue and
want to do sneaky fun stuff. The rest of our party are more traditional combat
focused (fighter, barbarian, ranger and paladin). We started the campaign as
convicts so we got no gear at all to start, and have just acquired weapons along
the way. We've gotten some pretty good combat stuff but I'm REALLY missing my rogue
stuff, primarily rope and the thieves tools. I've searched every location we've
been to and asked every NPC and there has not been a single bit of rope to be
found. Frustrating, but I'm still able to hidestealthsneak attack, so all has been
pretty good. I got extremely frustrated in yesterdays session though. It was the
first half of a seriously epic battle, an attack on a hobgoblin fort. We had a
whole mini session just to plan the attack and so he could explain the dynamic
battlefield. It's seriously cool. (Sidebar there's these army points both sides
have and we losegain a random amount each turn depending on how we deal with key
points in the battle. We got a battering ram, and platoon of crossbowmen to
control. It's an awesome and well executed battle) The map has a lot of features,
including the inner wall of the fort has vines that can be climbed up. I thought
this was perfect for me. I'll try to sneak up there and sabotage the
gatesassassinate archerscause mayhem. After some pretty good rolls I was able to
scale the wall and be hidden at the top hiding in the vines. This is where I can
tell the DM was frustrated that I split the party a bit (I was still within site of
the group) and he started throwing all these barriers for me to do anything. I
wanted to use the vines to scale down the other side, sorry they're grown into the
wall. I wanted to use my mage hand to distract archers, sorry they're focused on
the battle, you won't be able to distract them. I wanted to just try shooting some
of them with my longbow but every time I take a shot, like 6 of them start to
investigate and if I reveal again they will kill me. And again, I have ZERO gear
beyond weapons and armor. Maybe I'm just being difficult but I don't really want to
go tank a bunch of minions with everyone else all the time. And he told us in the
prep session that we could scale the vines to get inside. I'm probably explaining
my frustrations poorly, but I spent like 10 rounds of combat trying to get on top
of this freaking wall and every idea methe party had was extinguished. I have DM'd
a lot and always try to give leeway so players can do cool shit, especially if it's
playing their character. How can I tell him I'm unhappy with the restrictions he's
putting on my character It's a bit sticky too because he is actuall my IRL
bosssupervisor, but also a good friend and I don't want to spoil our relationship.

Party won’t let me use a DM screen - what do I do

Party won’t let me use a DM screen - what do I do

Hi, DM here running a “campaign” - only reason I use quotations is that we’re all
first time players (6 of us) and we’re doing the starter set adventure right now
with the hope that once we finish that, we can move onto a campaign that I have
written and planned for. But this isnt about being a first-time DM but rather a
general query So a while back I wanted to get myself a cheap DM screen just to make
sessions easier for me to run ( our table is pretty small and checking the manual
every 2 minutes is getting really tedious), and one day I mentioned to one of the
players that I wanted to get a DM screen, but they very clearly said that they did
not want me to get a screen as it, “seperates [me] from the rest of the group”, and
while i totally understand that, DMing isnt getting any easier. What do I do Do I
try to adapt and find another system Or do I get one anyway

Would a lvl 6 necromancer be a challenge for a lvl 3 party of 6

I’ve had this Lt. idea in my head for a necromancer and I do think with action
economy towards the players they can hold out on a necromancer For ads I’ve been
thinking a couple modified bandits like 4-5 and the Lt. can use raise undead on
their corpses for more ads At the end I’m thinking of the Lt. to use misty step
dash action and runs away when brought to low hp This is my first combat encounter
that I’m building so that is why I’m asking for help.

Any DMS give that guy the op nonsense they wanted, how did it go
After seeing some comments on another thread about players wanting essentially an I
win button in combat I wondered has anyone actually just said ok to it to see how
it went I would assume that essentially it ruins the game for everyone when combat
is bypassed but wanted to know if anyone actually did it Edit while they're good
advice here I'm not looking for advice, more wondering if anyone's given the dog
it's tail so to speak and what happened.

How to deal with the opposite extreme of a murder hobo (I have no idea what you'd

I'm in a party with a person who's so insanely pacifistic about everything that
it's actually started to become a detriment to us. The guy adamantly refuses to
fight, no matter the situation, they refuse to engage in combat. The very concept
of killing something disgusts their character. There have been times when they've
even put themselves and the rest of the party at risk by trying to step in the way
in the middle of a fight to try and negotiate with people that very clearly don't
want to be negotiated with (we're fighting a bunch of unhinged cultists). How do I
deal with them

to play to him to change his mind and would like some insight from others.
Context my bard is a 3 foot tall Felis with blue fur and a Lyre and drum he loves
and the Paladin only lets his friends call him Holy man. This is the Tale of a Fee-
line Kin who wished to be friends With a Pal-a-din We'll start this day in a Tavern
he'd play paws gripped on a Lyre strum the night away A tall lad strolled in sat
straight for the bar his eyes rolled back Oh, great, a bard. The cat rolled up
tapping on his drum and said Hey holy man, what's the matter, what's up But with a
tone so deep and a piercing gaze, he implied. call me that again, and you'll lose
your nine lives Well, would you be my... Lay on hands Lad My holy symbol homie A
healing hands herald with some tricks that you could show me My blessing bringin'
bro My divine smite Dude We could fight together, The rhyme right Brood! His hammer
raised high, so this tale i'll conclude,
and let this story run free,
so my tail doesn't too.

If Wizards have towers, what do the other classes get

If Wizards have towers, what do the other classes get

We all know wizards have towers. That's their big structure. It's where they nest
and do their little magic studies and all that. I'm trying to figure out what would
be a similar structure or location for the other classes that aren't just [class]
guild or whatever. I've got ideas for a few, but not super sure ones.
Artificer - Workshop or garage
Barbarian - Stronghold or camp
Bard - Hall (great, concert, or otherwise) or college
Bloodhunter - Lair, coven, or dungeon
Cleric - Church, temple, etc
Druid - Grove, enclave
Fighter - Keep, fortress, barracks
Monk - Monastery, abbey, etc
Paladin - Abbey, temple, keep
Ranger - Cabin or lodge
Rogue - Den, hideout, lair
Sorcerer - Spire or manor
Warlock - Ziggurat or tower
Wizard - Tower (as noted), or library
(I'll try to update this when fitting suggestions are made. Classes with a by
their name and the question mark removed have had their location added in an edit)
Edit about 20min after Already got a lot of great suggestions to fit with my own
personal thinking. There are a lot of other great ideas that I didn't necessarily
add here though. Thanks for the input folks!

Why can't arcane trickster learn Find Traps.

As an arcane trickster your Int should be high so your int checks like perception
should have around a +3 on them (it's a rough estimation). Often you expect your
rogue to be able to spot traps perfectly (it's one of their main job in the party
after all) and you put a precious proficiency on perception. But what if you don't
want to do that What if your arcane trickster is more of a book guy than a man of
action Find traps should be a spell available for an arcane trickster. It fit
perfectly the class and can help expand your horizons. Edit sorry I confused
investigation with perception

Is this a dick move as a DM before a campaign goes on hold

Is this a dick move as a DM before a campaign goes on hold

I am DMing a homebrew camping for four players. My players are currently level 12
and I plan on taking this campaign all the way through level 20 however we only
have a few more sessions before we will be forced to put the game on hold for six
to nine months, the goal is to return to the campaign and finish out afterwards so
I’ve been brainstorming ways to leave off in a way that is easy to pick up. Here
lies my dilemma. Pretty soon the players will be boarding a ship headed across the
ocean in search of a lost civilization. I’m planning on having the ship they are on
be attacked and sunk part way through the journey. The party will wash up on the
shore of a (as far as they can tell) deserted island, which will play into them
eventually finding this lost civilization. My dilemma is, is it a dick move to end
our final session before the long break with the shipwreck I’m talking the ship is
going down the party is thrown into the water fade to black. When we reconvene they
will wake up on washed ashore of the island. Edit Thank you all for your advice.
After reading your comments I think I’ve decided to go with the option of having
them wake up on the beach before ending the session. I still have some details to
hammer out and who knows, my party might not even go the route I’m expecting we
will see.

How much time should I give my players to make a wish

For reasons I will not get into, my players will have an opportunity to get an
efreeti bottle and I rolled a 97, so they are going to get three wishes. Knowing
this will be a major game breaker if I give them prep time I decided to make them
use their three wishes at the time they realize they have the opportunity. In real
time, I'm going to start a timer and if my 5 players can't decide on a wish in that
time, they lose a wish, and I start the timer again. How much time do you think is
appropriate to give them A minute Minute and a half 2 5 What do you guys think is
