May 2008 FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY 5-4 ‘MU-2 Training Manual — Models N, P, INTRODUCTION The MU-2 primary flight controls include the rudder, elevators, and spoilers; all are manually actuated. Rudder and elevator trim are manual; electric elevator trim is also provided. Roll trim is provided by electrically actuated trim ailerons. Secondary flight controls consist of electrically controlled and actuated flaps. A stall warning system, activated by a lift transducer in the wing leading edge, ‘warns of impending stall by control column shaking, PRIMARY FLIGHT CONTROLS GENERAL The spoilers, rudder, and elevators are manually operated by either the pilot or the copilot through conventional control columns and rudder pedals. Control inputs are transmitted to the control surfaces through cables, push-pull rods, and bellcranks. Control feel is provided in the rudder and spoiler systems by springs in the control linkages. Downsprings in the elevator control system provide the control feel There are no ailerons on the airplane; spoilers provide roll control. As the spoilers on one wing extend, the spoilers on the other wing move below the upper surface of that wing ‘A gust lock pin installed in the pilot's, control column provides gust protection for the elevators and the spoilers. The pin should be installed prior to leaving the airplane. The rudder is protected from gust damage by its interconnection with nosewheel steering linkage, Gust Lock Pin MEE WARNING: Remove the gust lock pin prior to takeoff. 52 FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY May 2008, sIMcOM ing Manual — Models N, P, Solitaire and Marquise ip nom — pa 78 SPOILERS awenons FLAP oF ie cuevaton Trl TABS Flight Control Surfaces (Typical) TRIM SYSTEMS ROLL TRIM General Roll trim is provided by two electrically actuated trim aileron surfaces on each outboard flap. Surfaces on the left and right wings normally move simultaneously in opposite directions; however, they can be isolated from each other and actuated individually, when necessary. Operation | The aileron trim knob is XX 4 spring loaded to the unmarked neutral position. - To initiate roll trim, rotate the knob to LOWER L WING or LOWER R WING, as desired. Two electric actuators, one in each ‘outboard flap, drive the trim ailerons simultaneously in opposite directions, as Roll Trim System selected. When the knob is May 2008 FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY SS sak 4 MU-2 Training Manual — Models N, aS released, it returns to neutral, stopping trim motion. Trim aileron position is shown on the electrically operated TRIM POSITION indicator above the trim knob. In the event of runaway roll trim, maintain control with the spoilers. Raise the guard on the TRIM AIL SELECT switch and move it to either the LH or RH position to isolate the runaway actuator. Continue trimming with the aileron trim knob. A failed actuator can be detected and isolated in the same manner. Aileron Trim Knob RUDDER TRIM Operation ‘The rudder trim tab is cable-connected to the rudder trim wheel beneath the Power lever quadrant. Rotating the wheel NOSE L or NOSE R positions the tab, as selected. Tab position is shown on a mechanical position indicator above the trim wheel On airplanes with a Bendix or Sperry autopilot, signals from the electric turn coordinator are utilized for yaw damping. The yaw damper system utilizes an electric actuator to apply rudder against yaw tendencies, Trim Wheels and Indicators a4 FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY May 2008 SIMCOM MU-2 Training Manual — Models N, P, 5 ire and Marquise i WA, Ye ELEVATOR TRIM Operation The elevator trim tabs are cable-operated from the elevator trim wheel on the left side of the power lever quadrant. Rotation of the trim wheel to NOSE UP or NOSE DOWN mechanically positions the elevator trim tabs, as shown on the mechanical indicator adjacent to the trim whee! AIL N, P, Solitaire and Marquise model airplanes are equipped with electric elevator trim. Trim is initiated with a dual pitch trim thumb switch on the outboard side of each control wheel. Both sides of the switch must be actuated to operate the electric pitch trim system. A red autopilot and pitch trim disconnect switch is located on the outboard handle of each yoke to remove power from the pitch trim in the event of a pitch trim runaway or autopilot malfunction. Elevator Trim Tab With the autopilot master switch on (autopilot not engaged), movement of the pitch trim thumb switch to UP or DOWN. electrically positions the elevator trim tabs as selected. As trim is in progress, the manual elevator trim wheel and the elevator position indicator move accordingly. Pilot trim inputs override those initiated by the copilot Primary elevator trim runaway can be controlled by moving and holding the pitch trim switch in the opposite direction. An alternate method is to hold the manual elevator trim wheel until the AUTOPILOT circuit breaker trips. A 28-VDC electric motor driving torque tubes transmits power to jackscrew actuators in the wings for flap extension and retraction. Flap position is indicated by one green and three amber lights. Left and right wing flaps are mechanically interconnected to prevent asymmetry. HON Flap System Operation The flap handle has four positions — UP, 5°, 20°, and 40°. Moving the handle to any of the operating positions energizes the motor to drive the flaps. As the flaps reach the selected position, the adjacent amber light illuminates, and a limit switch opens the motor circuit, stopping the flaps. When the flaps are in the UP position, the green light illuminates. In the event that a limit switch fails to stop the fiap motor at a selected position, the drive mechanism contacts a mechanical stop, stopping the motor in the full up or down position, depending on direction of travel. To reduce “ballooning,” the flaps incorporate a__‘Flap Position Indicators pulse drive system to slow flap operation between 3° and 20°. 56 FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY May 2008 SIMCOM - x MU-2 Training Manual — Models N, P, Solitaire and Marquise ee BE STALL WARNING Stall attitudes are sensed by an electrically heated lift transducer in the leading ‘edge of the right wing. Signals from the transducer and a flap position switch are electronically evaluated, At 4 to 9 knots above stall speed at each flap position, the system activates a control column shaker. Lift Transducer The system can be tested with the STALL WARN TEST switch on the center instrument panel. Positioning the switch to AIR while in flight or to GRD with the airplane on the ground causes the shaker to actuate. WZZZZZZZACKUTION: Due to the disorientation of airfoils, stalling speed should be expected to increase as ice accumulates on the airplane. Stall warning devices may not be accurate and should not be relied upon. May 2008 FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY SIMCOM ‘MU-2 Training Manual — Models N, P, Solitaire and Marquise BS QUESTIONS 1.
