All gear retract aft on the P and Solitaire models, and retract forward on the N and Marquise models. All gear are completely enciosed when retracted. Gear position and warning are provided by colored indicator lights and a warning hom, Nosewheel steering is mechanically actuated by the rudder pedals. Differential braking can be used to supplement steering. ‘The hydraulic wheel brake system is pressurized by master cylinders actuated by the tops of the rudder pedals. GENERAL ‘All three landing gear are actuated by jackscrew actuators powered by @ 28- VDC motor through gearboxes, torque tubes, and a slip clutch Left Landing Gear Gear Box An electric actuator operates the main gear forward doors on N and Marquise models, and the main gear aft doors on P and Solitaire models. Nose gear doors on all models are mechanically actuated ‘The gear are locked in the retracted or extended position by the inherent friction of the jackscrews; however, the nose gear incorporates an additional mechanical downlock. The gear can be manually extended in the event of an electrical failure. Gear position indication is provided by one red and three green lights on the landing gear control panel. In addition, a warning hom sounds if either power lever is retarded to approximately one-half inch forward of FLIGHT IDLE, regardless of airspeed, with any gear not down and locked. 82 FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY May 2008 ‘MU-2 Training Manual — Models N, P, Solitaire and Marquise Nosewhee! steering is mechanically disengaged as retraction begins, Nose strut centering is accomplished with a centering cam. On the P and Solitaire models, the cam is on the bulkhead and engages a roller on the strut. On the N and Marquise models, the cam is on the strut, and the roller is on the bulkhead. Nosewheel shimmy is dampened by a self contained shimmy damper. Each main gear wheel houses a rotating-disc brake assembly actuated by pressure from pilot or copilot operated master cylinders. Parking brakes can be set with a handle located on the left forward side of the pedestal. LANDING GEAR MAIN GEAR ‘The main gear assembly includes a shock strut, leg assembly, single wheel with brake assembly, jackscrew (drag strut), and forward and aft doors. In addition to actuating the gear, the jackscrew functions as an uplock and downlock mechanism and provides rigidity when the gear is extended. FORWARD DOOR} AND LINK. JACKSCREW (Rac stRUT) ASSEMBLY LEG ‘GROUND DOOR OPEN SWITCH (LEFT WHEEL WELL) FORWARD DOOR Right Main Gear and Doors (P and Soli ‘May 2008 FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY 83 MU-2 Training Manual — Models N, P, Solitaire All models have forward and aft main gear doors. On the P and Solitaire model airplanes, the forward door is mechanically actuated by shock strut movement; the aft door by a 28 VDC actuator. On the N and Marquise model airplanes, the aft door is mechanically actuated by gear movement; the forward door is actuated by a 28 VDC actuator. The electrically actuated main gear doors can be opened on the ground for inspection with a guarded switch in the left main wheel well (P and Solitaire models) or in the right main whee! well (N and Marquise models) (ME WARNING: If the main gear doors have been opened with the switch in the wheel well, the LG MOTOR, CONT, and DOOR MOTOR circuit breakers must be pulled to’ preclude inadvertent closing of the doors. AFTDOOR |AFT-DOOR LINKAGE LEG ASSEMBLY Right Main Gear and Doors (N and Marquise Models) NOSE GEAR ‘The nose gear consists of a shock strut, torque link, dual wheels, jackscrew, two drag links, shimmy damper, and three doors (P and Solitaire models) or two doors (N and Marquise models). The jackscrew actuates the nose gear. The irreversible characteristics of the jackscrew enable it to function as an uplock and a downlock. Both drag struts also incorporate mechanical downlocks and provide rigidity to the gear when extended ‘The P and Solitaire models have three nose gear doors ~ two aft doors actuated by the gear operating mechanism, and one forward door mechanically actuated by nose strut movement. The aft doors are closed with the gear extended or retracted, The two nose gear doors on the N and Marquise model airplanes are linked to the gear and remain open with the gear extended, FORWARO DOOR a4 FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY May 2008 MU-2 Training Manual — Models N, P, Solitaire and Marquise mean FORWARD DOOR, Nose Gear and Doors (P and Solitaire Models) AFT OOORS Nose Gear and Doors (N and Marquise Models) May 2008 FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY 85 U2 Training Manual — Models N, P, Solitai Landing Gear Actuating Mechanism (Long Bod) CONTROLS AND INDICATORS. General The landing gear is controlled with the LAND GEAR control switch on the pilot's forward instrument subpanel. Gear position is indicated by a red UNSAFE light and three ‘green gear indicator lights adjacent to the control switch. Controls The LAND GEAR control switch has two positions - UP and DOWN, Inadvertent retraction while on the ground is prevented by a safety switch actuated by the left main gear. With the weight of the airplane on the gear, the switch opens the circuit to the landing gear motor. 86 FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY ‘and Marquise EMERGENCY GEARBOX EXTENSION GEAREOX ‘y) Landing Gear Controls and Indicators May 2008 ‘MU-2 Training Manual — Models N, P, Solitaire and Marquise Indicators As the main gear electrically actuated doors ‘open for gear extension, the red UNSAFE light comes on. As each gear locks down, the corresponding green light comes on. When all three gear are down and locked and the electrically operated main gear doors are closed, all three green lights will be on and the Normal Indications, Gear Down, It any gear does not lock down during extension, the corresponding green light wil not illuminate, and the red light will remain on, Nose Gear Not Down and Locked As the main gear electrically actuated doors ‘open for retraction, the red UNSAFE light again illuminates. As each gear unlocks and begins to retract, the corresponding green light goes out. The red light remains on until all gear are retracted and the main gear doors, close, then goes out. Normal Indications, Gear Up May 2008 FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY 87 ss i Sf WU.2 Training Manual — Models NP, Soltaire and Marquise aK If any gear fails to retract completely or if a main gear door fails to close, the red light remains on Conger ® fA ‘One or More Gear Not Fully Retracted, ‘or a Main Gear Door Not Closed ‘The UNSAFE light can be checked by depressing the light, or it can be dimmed with the IND LTS DIM switch on the center instrument panel Warning System ‘Awarning hom sounds if either power lever is retarded to approximately one-half inch forward of FLIGHT IDLE position with any gear not down and locked or if the LAND GEAR control switch is positioned to UP with the airplane on the ground. The horn can be silenced by depressing the HORN CUTOUT switch or by advancing either power lever one-half inch forward of FLIGHT IDLE. If the wing flaps are extended beyond 5°, the horn cannot be silenced. Power lever advancement automatically resets warming hom circuitry for subsequent operation. OPERATION Normal Positioning the LAND GEAR control switch to either the UP or the DOWN position causes the following sequence of events to occur: ‘* Power is applied to the main gear door actuator to unlock and open the electrically operated main gear doors. ‘+ Power is applied to the gear motor to extend or retract the gear, as applicable, * Power is again applied to the door actuator to close the electrically operated main gear doors. A slip clutch incorporated into the landing gear mechanical drive train prevents system damage in the event of mechanical binding. The clutch will slip until the LG MOTOR circuit breaker trips, disabling the gear motor. ‘On the P and Solitaire models, a torque link operated switch on the nose gear strut prevents retraction ifthe strut does not fully extend at liftoff. Emergency Extension ‘An emergency extension handle, safety wired to prevent accidental operation, is located on the floor beside the pilot 88 FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY May 2008 ce Sak ra ‘MU-2 Training Manual — Models N, P, Solitaire and Marquise Prior to performing an emergency extension, airspeed must be reduced to 130 knots, the flaps positioned to 5°, the landing gear circuit breakers (CONT, DOOR: MOTOR, and LG MOTOR) pulled and the LAND GEAR control switch positioned to DOWN. To actuate the system, pull the handle up approximately 15° ‘to mechanically release all door locks. Continue raising the handle to approximately 70°. then ratchet the gear to the down-and-locked position (approximately 100 to 130 strokes). ‘The three green gear indicator lights will ‘come on when the gear locks down, but the red UNSAFE light will remain on and the main gear doors will remain open. Emergency Extension Handle NOSEWHEEL STEERING With the airplane on the ground, deflection of the rudder pedals actuates mechanical linkage to steer the nosewheel 21° right or 24° or 25° left of center. The steering ‘mechanism automatically disengages when the nose gear leaves the down- and-locked position for, retraction, Steering can be supplemented with differential braking. Nosewheel shimmy motion is transmitted through the torque Nose Gear Torque Link link to the self-contained shim my damper on the nose strut. PZZZZZZZACAUTION: The nose gear scissors must be disconnected prior to towing, and reconnected prior to flight. While disconnected, the nosewheel is capable of being rotated 360°. If towing is attempted with the nose gear torque link connected, damage to the steering mechanism andior rudder control cables may result. When parked, connecting the nosewheel torque link provides gust lock protection for the rudder controls. May 2008 FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY 8-9 1g Manual — Models N, P, Solitaire and Marquise BRAKES GENERAL The hydraulic brake system consists of master cylinders actuated by the copilot's rudder pedals, a reservoir, a mixer (shuttle) valve, and a single-disc, multiple-spot brake assembly in each main wheel. The brakes can be operated by either the pilot or the copilot. Toe pressure applied to the top of either set of pedals actuates the brakes. Each master cylinder supplies pressure to its brake assembly; therefore, differential braking is available, Hydraulic fuid from the brake reservoir is supplied to all four master oylinders. As the brakes are applied with either set of master cylinders, pressure in direct proportion to pedal deflection is directed through the mixer valve and the parking brake valve to the brake assemblies. In the event that both pilots apply the brakes simultaneously, the mixer valve selects the higher pressure being applied for control and operation of the brakes The pilot can set the parking brakes by applying toe pressure to the rudder Pedals and pulling the PARKING BRAKE handle on the left forward side of the Pedestal clockwise. The parking brakes can be released by rotating the handle counter-clockwise and pushing it in.
