The passage “Faces” was published in 2009 by Amiee Bender in The Paris

Review.

“Faces” is about 3 people -William, his mother Mrs Robertson and a

doctor in the doctor’s office trying to figure William’s issue of not being

able to determine faces, -which isn’t a normal visit, and also William's

own opinions of having these issues.

In this passage, with speaking short phrases such as “ ‘There,’ I said, ‘A

baby’ ”,William seems to be nervous of coming to the hospital, not

willing to to expose his own problems to others

. After,to prove he didn’t have a problem, he started speaking a lot and

became excited “ ‘What?,’ I said, “Do I have brain damage?Who cares

who’s who? I enjoy the general. So what’s wrong with that? Why is this

important? If I meet the person I and talk to them,I’ll know what they are

then.’ ”He concealed his inner panic by constantly asking questions like

that trying to convince himself as well as others. At last, he started to

pretend that having a problem didn’t affect him “I didn’t see why I

needed to read their faces.Wasn’t there enough complication in the

world already besides having to take in the overload of details and

universes in every sine person’s face?”From asking questions,he was

trying to comfort himself that there wasn’t a problem of having this

issue, that it wans’t important of seeing other’s expression. On the other

hand, his mom was calm as if she already knew that he had a problem,

and the doctor was used to seeing paitients like him.

From the passage we can know that he is very sensitive of his

surroundings, so once they turned their head, he caught it. Besides he

had gussed that he had a problem, and with his nervous feelings, he

imagined their was a look between them and what the look was。

By reading the article, after understanding the basic content, we can

combine it with the atmosphere that the author wants to create,

substitute the characters to experience their feelings and make

guesses. Also, authors usually want us to think deeply about what they

want to say so they won’t give you much infomation

After reading, I felt depressed, and the author made me feel sad by

constantly creating contradictions and elaborating on serious events.

Even though I Ilaughed a the “ridiculously long neck” but the low

atmosphere still pulled me back to the story.
