Grigsby Intermediate School, 5th Grade, Coordinating Teacher: Robert Dettmers
Notes:
Coordinating teacher has great classroom transitions. When necessary, he puts on
peaceful music and has the students take a minute break to lay their head down and relax before the next subject. For students achieving above level, Mr. Dettmers will put these students in a group to work on additional math problems to challenge these students. Every time the class leaves the room, Mr. Dettmers reminds the students to have a voice level 0 in the hallway. In the morning, students independently work on math facts to have a calm start to the day. Mr. Dettmers often uses the strategy think, pair, share allowing the students to work with their peers around them. Coordinating teacher has great communication with the students, willing to hold classroom discussions about incidents occuring throughout the school and in the classroom. The classroom is a positive environment, coordinating teacher is often giving positive feedback and encouragement to the students.
Through my experience at Grigsby Intermediate School, I learned a lot from my Coordinating
Teacher. My CT was always willing to answer the students' questions and work with them on difficult problems. The classroom environment was a positive one, that encouraged the students and set them up for success. Each morning the students had time to work on math facts individually, creating a calm space to learn in that set the tone for the day. The students would often participate in the strategy think, pair, share allowing the students to share ideas with their classmates and expand their knowledge. My CT had a great relationship with the students as he challenged and encouraged them throughout each day. Overall, I had a great experience, I felt very supported by the teaching staff as I grew in my teaching abilities.
