the film is set in those mysterious woods. So, it’s dark and eerie and just fanciful enough to have that
fairytale feel. Yet, it’s not overdone and I think this is why I felt like I was watching live theater in
many of the scenes. In movies, there is the ability to let the cinematography & visuals almost
overpower the actual actors & plot. But, that is not the case here. While you still have some
amazingly grand scenes, there really is a focus on the actors & music! Rob Marshall is brilliant at this

March 2018 (29) More problematic was Chris Pine’s performance as Cinderella’s prince. When he
started his first number, “Agony,” I was mortified because he was so cheesy and melodramatic. I
thought, “Why didn’t [director] Rob Marshall tell him to tone it down?!” Halfway through the
number, I realized Pine was intentionally lampooning the concept of Prince Charming.
NEWSLETTER: September (39) February 2011 The long-awaited, visually sumptuous film version
of “Into The Woods” is likely to please theatergoers who are already fans of Stephen Sondheim and
James Lapine’s clever 1987 musical mashup of our culture’s best-known fairy tales, even if they have
some quibbles; it will surely thrill the fans of the many stars that populate the film, a cast so
uniformly first rate that Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp don’t especially stand out. We’ll have to see
whether the average moviegoers, fairy tale enthusiasts, and parents looking for family entertainment
will just scratch their heads. Jack (Daniel Huttlestone) is an absent-minded and carefree boy who
trades his treasured cow, Milky-White, for five magic beans. There’s also a new clip featuring

Florinda and Lucinda (Tammy Blanchard and Lucy Punch) are Cinderella’s vile stepsisters,
who taunt Cinderella and take pleasure in causing her pain and humiliation. For years, composer and
lyricist Stephen Sondheim’s 1987 fairy tale mashup, written with librettist James Lapine, has hacked
its way through the thicket of Hollywood development. And the movie now before us? Here’s a

Disney’s INTO THE WOODS hits theaters on Christmas Day and with its star-studded cast (that
already includes multiple award nominations), it is one not to miss! I just returned from LA after
attending a special #IntoTheWoodsEvent trip hosted by Disney, where we had the pleasure of
screening the film at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater (the official “Academy” Theatre) and
interviewing a large portion of the cast & crew (including Meryl Streep). What an experience! I’ll be
sharing lots from that in upcoming posts, but first let’s talk about the film itself! Acting Fairy tales
are often passed down to young children as an enthralling and captivating source of amusing
entertainment, but rarely do they passionately explore what truly happens to the characters once they
achieve their happily ever after. So acclaimed film and Broadway director Rob Marshall, who has
brilliantly chronicled the human condition and motivations in his previous projects, including the
Academy Award-winning 2002 musical ‘Chicago,’ once again movingly explored contemporary
themes through classic characters in his new film adaptation, ‘Into the Woods.’ Through the
modernly relatable perspectives of such fairy tale characters as Cinderella, the title character from
Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood, the fantasy film, which is based on
Stephen Sondheim’s celebrated 1988 Broadway musical of the same name, serves as a cautionary
tale. The family movie cleverly warns about the consequences of people actually getting everything
they think they want, and giving into society’s expectations. I think the film adaptation of the
Hairspray musical is pretty damn good. Dr. Horrible is also great, but not sure if it counts as a film.

2019 January 2011 July 2013 (34) February (32) December 2015 INTO THE WOODS, for those
unfamiliar with the original, blends together a number of familiar fairy and folktales – the Baker
(James Corden) and his Wife (Emily Blunt), Jack (Daniel Huttlestone) and the Beanstalk, Red
Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Cinderella (Anna Kendrick) and Rapunzel (Mackenzie Mauzy) – and
weaves them together into an intertwined yarn, bound together by a very determined Witch (Meryl
Streep). October (59) July (27) artists responsibility August 2015 (27) politics In Theaters: Dec 25,

at ASSIGNMENT X March 2019 (34) In creating the stage show, Lapine and Sondheim combined
several fairy tales, particularly those of the Brothers Grimm. To the tales of Cinderella, Rapunzel,
Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding Hood, they added new characters, chief among them a
baker (James Corden in the film, terrific) and his wife (Emily Blunt, also terrific). Their desire to
have a child has been forestalled by a curse laid on them by the witch next door (Meryl Streep),
whose back story never was the most compelling thing about “Into the Woods.” December (43) No

material, only to skimp on the second act. By August 2020 Leah and I were able to go to an
advanced screening of Into the Woods and it was Incredible! I can’t express how much both of us
enjoyed this movie. Into the Woods opens Christmas Day and it is a great one to go see with the
entire family. Leah and I loved the music, the acting, the scenery and most of all the stories. I had
seen the play a long time ago and couldn’t really remember the storyline. I loved every second of it.

The Big Bad Wolf (Johnny Depp) and more are just a few of the main characters that I absolutely
adore. October (60) April 2012 As expected, Meryl Streep is well cast as the witch, bringing humor
and a hint of humanity to the role. Johnny Depp’s wolf is appropriately lecherous and predatory and,
yes, funny. Anyone who has seen Streep’s and Depp’s turns in Mamma Mia! and Sweeney Todd,
respectively, know they can carry a tune. Powered by Create your own unique website with
