Video script
This is Oxford in England ... and this is Oxford prison.
It was a prison from 1878 until 1996.
In 2006 the prison re-opened.
The prison is now Malmaison Oxford, a luxury hotel.
So what has changed? The outside looks almost the same. But now there’s a front
door that’s always open.
Inside you can still see the old hall, stair, and doors, but the chairs and carpets are new.
The prison cells were very small. Sometimes there were three people in one cell. The
beds weren’t very comfortable.
The hotel rooms and beds are much bigger. The rooms are comfortable and have
satellite TV and Internet access. Room service is much better too. And you don’t have
to share the bathroom.
In the hotel you can eat and drink in a selection of restaurants and bars. And you
don’t have to eat with all the other guests.
You can also go outside to eat.
Of course, you have to pay these days, but you can leave any time you like.
