Q. Find out the applications of all the inert gases, prepare a chart and display it in the class.

Inert gases
An inert gas is a gas that does not readily undergo chemical reactions with other chemical
substances and therefore does not readily form chemical compounds
There are 7 nobel gas elements
The six naturally occurring noble gases
are helium (He), neon (Ne), argon (Ar), krypton (Kr), xenon (Xe), and the
radioactive radon (Rn). Oganesson (Og) is a synthetically produced highly radioactive
element

➢ Applications on all inert gases are as followed:-

❖ Helium (He) :
• While balloons are perhaps the best known use of helium, they are a minor part of all
helium use.
• Helium is used as a protective gas in growing silicon and germanium crystals,
in titanium and zirconium production, and in gas chromatography, because it is inert.
Because of its inertness, thermally and calorically perfect nature, high speed of sound,
and high value of the heat capacity ratio, it is also useful in supersonic wind tunnels
and impulse facilities.

❖ Neon (Ne) :
• Neon is often used in signs and produces an unmistakable bright reddish-orange light.
Although tube lights with other colors are often called "neon", they use different noble
gases or varied colors of fluorescent lighting.
• Neon is used in vacuum tubes, high-voltage indicators, lightning
arresters, wavemeter tubes, television tubes, and helium–neon lasers.
• Liquefied neon is commercially used as a cryogenic refrigerant in applications not
requiring the lower temperature range attainable with more extreme liquid-helium
refrigeration.

❖ Argon (Ar) :
• Argon is used in some high-temperature industrial processes where ordinarily non-
reactive substances become reactive. For example, an argon atmosphere is used in
graphite electric furnaces to prevent the graphite from burning.
• Argon is used in some types of arc welding such as gas metal arc welding and gas
tungsten arc welding, as well as in the processing of titanium and other reactive
elements.
• An argon atmosphere is also used for growing crystals of silicon and germanium.

❖ Krypton (Kr) :
• Krypton's white discharge is sometimes used as an artistic effect in gas discharge "neon"
tubes.
• Krypton is used occasionally as an insulating gas between window
panes. SpaceX Starlink uses krypton as a propellant for their electric propulsion system.
• Krypton-83 has application in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for imaging airways.

❖ Xenon (Xe) :
• Xenon is used in light-emitting devices called xenon flash lamps, used in photographic
flashes and stroboscopic lamps;[17] to excite the active medium in lasers which then
generate coherent light;[136] and, occasionally, in bactericidal lamps.
• Xenon is used as a "starter gas" in high pressure sodium lamps.
• Xenon has been used as a general anesthetic, but it is more expensive than
conventional anesthetics.

❖ Radon (Rn) :
• Radon has been produced commercially for use in radiation therapy, but for the most
part has been replaced by radionuclides made in particle accelerators and nuclear
reactors.
• Radon has been used in implantable seeds, made of gold or glass, primarily used to
treat cancers, known as brachytherapy
• Radon soil-concentration has been used in an experimental way to map buried close-
subsurface geological faults because concentrations are generally higher over the faults.

❖ Ogenesson (Og) :
• It is a radioactive element used for reserch.
