Future Trends in Healthcare Delivery

Healthcare delivery in the 21st century is extremely dynamic, with new developments

every year. Therefore, it is imperative that healthcare organizations are flexible and adaptable.

Trends such as value-based care, social determinants of health, and coordinated care have

defined healthcare delivery since the turn of the century. Further change is inevitable, as

healthcare delivery seeks to meet the needs of society. The first trend that will dominate the

delivery of healthcare services in the next decade is care model innovation. Increased access to

information has transformed patients from passive to active participants in the care process.

Accordingly, the demand for convenience, transparency, and personalized products will increase

(Khayal & Farid, 2018, p.1). Consumers will also have increased control over their personal

health data. The effect of this trend on healthcare organizations is that they will implement

virtual health strategies to address the demands of customers. This will the regular use of health

chatbots, teleconference appointments, and video visits (Burrill, n.d.). The second trend in

healthcare delivery is the adoption of blockchain technology by healthcare organizations. An

essential component of modern healthcare delivery is patient data. Issues regarding the data

privacy and security dominate healthcare discussions (Siyal et al., 2019, p.3). Blockchain

technology will transform the treatment of data by addressing issues pertaining to

interoperability, access, and sharing. Patients will give consent for data sharing and treatment,

with the preferences being stored on the blockchain. This way, stakeholders can access

consented patient data from one place thus reducing the burden involved in sharing patient data

(Agbo et al., 2019, p.74). Blockchain will also ensure the integrity of patient record since all

stakeholders are informed if a record is changed. Blockchain technology will ensure faster care

and improve patient experience, which is in line with patient-centered care.
